Joel Osteen / New Age / Kenneth Copeland twist Jesus’ I AM Statements

- Jesus proclaimed his divinity with his I AM statements (I am the bread of life, I am the light of the world, I am the door of the sheep, I am the good shepherd, I am the resurrection and the life, I am the way the truth and the life, and I am the true vine). Jesus also proclaimed “Before Abraham was born, I am,” equating himself with God’s “I am what I am” declaration in Exodus 3:14.
Yet, new agers like Abraham-Hicks, and Word of Faith teachers like Kenneth Copeland and Joel Osteen, twist Jesus’ I Am statements to try to conjure and manifest personal desires (I am prosperous, I am healthy) and to boost self-esteem (I am lovable).
In this video, Pastor Jon Benzinger of Redeemer Bible Church in Arizona, discusses how Jesus’ words “I Am” are ego eimi in Koine Greek, and these words refer to God alone. When others twist this phrase for their own will, they are displaying a lack of trust in God and are likely following the new age / Word of Faith deception that they are their own god and can create with their declarations, decreeing and affirmations.
