  • Death Rides a Horse (1968): Spaghetti Western, Full Length, HD, Free Western Movie, English, Wild West, Cowboy, Lee Van Cleef Western.
    Director: Giulio Petroni
    Writer: Luciano Vincenzoni (script)
Stars: Lee Van Cleef, John Phillip Law, Mario Brega
    Country: Italy
    Language: English
Release Date: 8 March 1968 (West Germany)
Also Known As: Von Mann zu Mann
Filming Locations: La Calahorra, Granada, Andalucía, Spain
A young gunfighter plans to track down and eliminate the bandits who killed his family, and forms a tenuous alliance with an aging ex-outlaw to achieve this end.
Before his very eyes, a young boy watches the cutthroats of a small g*ng raid his humble home, r*pe and slaughter his whole family. Fifteen years later, Bill Meceita, the once-helpless boy and the sole survivor of the massacre, has now become a cool and skilful sharpshooter, seeking revenge against the band of unknown killers. In the meantime, the seasoned gunslinger and freshly out of prison, Ryan, has already embarked on a journey of sweet retribution, unaware that before long, he will cross paths with Bill, sharing the same desire for justice. But what could possibly unite the two unlikely companions? Written by Nick Riganas
"Death Rides a Horse is one that Spaghetti Western fans (and fans of Lee Van Cleef) would thoroughly enjoy. The FILM is most watchable (read below about the DVD and possible hopes for a Region 1 letterbox DVD release), and Van Cleef is at his best in this one, playing a thug who is betrayed by his com padres. We usually see him playing the ultimate bad guy in most of his films, with his knife-deep stare filling the screen. At times, though, Van Cleef exposes his compassionate side for just a tease, and then just as quickly masks his inner humanity behind The Stare, as he plays Ryan, who arm-wrestles throughout the movie with stubborn youngster Bill (John Phillip Law), who has forsaken his lady and his life by embracing only revenge - and a single spur - after watching his father murdered, only to then bear witness to his mother and older sister brutalized at the hands of an out-of-control g*ng, greedy for gold.
The match-up between Ryan and Bill is one that plays itself out quite well, as Ryan acts as surrogate father, dishing out advice through some memorable quotes, teaching young Bill with his words and actions. Bill's anger is worn heavily on his sleeve, while Ryan steadily and calmly works out his own dishes of revenge, suppressing his anger even better than his empathy for Bill, which he touches on even as the pair first meet. Phillip Law was okay, but not thoroughly convincing as a bitter young man who witnessed his family's killing. Every once in a while, he might could have done just another take or two, but it's an easy pill to swallow since Van Cleef balances him out.
I wouldn't want to go deeper into reviewing the movie, except that there's a nice plot twist somewhere inside the film. Many of the actors seen in this 1968 film have been in films by the great Sergio Leone. It seems that there was a core of actors who performed in a number of Italian Westerns, and for good reason: the chemistry was there. Add a good dose of Ennio Morricone film scores, and you have the potential for a quite watchable film. Most spaghetti's would be overcooked and unpalatable if not for Morricone music, which acts as an unseen, yet incredibly talented main character.
Once in a while, the dialog (like Bill's off-balance delivery: "I'll find out who he is. If he is who I think he is...get ready to get mad") detracts from the slow and steady pace of Death Rides a Horse (that line makes me want to Kill Bill, myself), but the overall storyline works well enough to entertain Spaghetti Western fans. There are very few plot holes to pick at in the film, which has an air of dread or darkness throughout much of its length. A lighter moment always seems to pop in just when the viewer might like to come up for air (like a character who offers Bill a kiss).
For those concerned about bad or unbelievable endings, Death Rides delivers without disappointment. " Written by EyeDunno

Lee Van Cleef is Brilliant, as Always!

I'm 57 yrs old. I watched this movie when I was 7/8. The opening scene and young man practising his gun slinging skills to avenge his family's murders stayed with me forever. Being that young I never took notice of the movie's title. I searched the western genre tirelessly until I stumbled upon it early this morning. My excitement knew no bounds. Truly one of the best

A real western classic. Lee Van Cleef was phenomenal as usual... He's one of the goats of westerns with Cooper, Wayne and Eastwood. This movie was very violent, the beginning made me want to cry and I was angry! Glad Meceita got his revenge! Ennio Morricone really knows how to create an atmosphere with his scores. This movie has a haunting aura... And the score is quite haunting! Good movie that I'll watch again with my list of spaghetti westerns.

I always like the Lee Van Cleef actor. He's played good an bad guys during his career making movies but I like the ones where he's played the good guy best. From his westerns to his war movies he will always be one of the greatest actors to me right up there with the great Mr John Wayne, who I have a huge picture of him hanging up over my fireplace. Rip both of you because you both were two of the greatest actors ever to been film in my opinion and I know millions of other people will say the exact same thing. What a surprising treasure! I had to see it because I'm a super fan of Lee Van Cleef! Until I read the credits at the film's start, I would have sworn that Bill Meceita was played by Terrence Hill. But of course the part was most ably played by John Phillip Law, Anyway, this film stands out as a monumental spaghetti western, thanks to the extremely skillful direction by Giulio Petroni, who ranks high up there alongside Sergio Leone, which is a compliment that I rarely give to anyone! The masterful, rousing score by Ennio Morricone sealed the deal, elevating this cinematic jewel into a true classic of the very highest order.

July 12, 2019 ~ I'm old, Le Van Cleef was a bad guy in most of the movies. Even in the good the bad and the Ugly, he was the bad guy. This was a typical Spaghetti western. I was discharged from the US Army in 1966 when Clint eastward was just getting big on the Big screen! Lots of action. Lee Van Cleef fell right into those westerns as the bad tough sombre. This Was a good movie (Thumbs Up) Listen good at the end. It's shocking.

WOW!!! Man is it so good to see a fully restored Print of this. For a long time this wasn't available on video or dvd. When it first hit the internet it was a poor print, and not all of the Beginning was intact. My older brother told me to go see this movie when I was a kid. This was one of my older brothers favorite Westerns. His favorite scene was the gunfight between Bill and the gambler! 4 Aces tattooed on his chest!!!! 4 bullet's in his chest!!!! Then comes.the classic line. "Always count your bullets son. 4 bullets for one man such a waste!" He talked about it for days. LoL. My brother is gone now. RIP.
Ironically someone sent him 6 bullets. He caught 4. It took him 3 days to die. He was sitting up in the hospital talking with a shattered kidney blood system poisoned. I was told that a doctor past the comment or someone in the medical field working there," They said I don't know why hes hanging around. We can't save him. That's a dead man." "Bloodstream is poisoned." That's a true story. Strange, I never ever thought about the film story and his life ending story together until I watched this now.
    Rest in peace brother.

If you love cinematography, you must watch "The Wild Bunch" in 2.4:1. I watched it decades ago when it was common to crop wide-screen to 4:3. I liked the movie, but when I saw the original mise en scene, it blew my mind. Every frame is perfect.

@james jezinvedn Probably, but I'm just 1/4 Native American and don't live on a reservation. The US has done a great disservice to them even today by not telling there side of the story or even history. They held out pretty good till overwhelming numbers and technology forced a surrender. I still hold great resentment over forced resettlement, luckily my great grandparents missed the trail of tears by staying in the mountains of N.C.
None of that means I can't enjoy a good Western even if I do root for the Indians.
