Great interview Matt, well done. You have a great way of asking open ended questions, giving your interview subject the opportunity to really talk. Your demeanor and cheerful attitude makes for a comfortable discussion rather than a boring predictable or confrontational 'gotcha' type of interview.
It's been great seeing your confidence grow alongside your views and channel subscriptions. Take care from Australia. 🌈🇦🇺💙

I am deeply inspired by the work and dedication of Carmen Carrera in championing trans rights and visibility. As an Asian trans woman, her efforts resonate profoundly with me, reminding us all of the strength, resilience, and beauty of our community. Her advocacy has not only uplifted trans voices but also shed light on the unique challenges faced by trans individuals across different cultures.
Let us continue to support and amplify the work of activists like Carmen, ensuring that every step forward leads us closer to a world where trans people are celebrated, respected, and empowered. Together, we can create a future where all trans lives thrive with dignity and pride.

I remember that interview with Katie. Carmen handled it as best she could while being put on the spot but Laverne Cox came out to be interviewed soon after, joining Carmen, and Laverne really was more eloquent and knowledgeable with her words and really helped Carmen and supported her. It was wonderful to see ❤

She did what they say MEN DO . Katie is out of line . That’s inappropriate just because she is a female . Still not cool to ask.

Another amazing interview. I remember Carmen Carrera when she was Chris. I live in New Jersey. She was a handsome man as she is a beautiful women. I use to see her in drag shows in the different clubs in New Jersey and New York. Her performances were always epic. Her hair, makeup, costumes were always well made and quality. She had a big following. Carmen was always friendly and respectful to her audience (fans). We all loved her becoming a contestant on drag race. I was surprised when Carmen said she was transitioning to a woman. This because she as a man was extremely handsome and had a butch/glam to his dress and attitude which was very appealing. She lived in Perth Amboy, New Jersey at the time. She was very popular in the community at the time. Glad to see her evolution on this interview. Excellent work.

Best episode yet. What a full circle story. Imagine being able to donate that amount of money to a charity profiting the same disease your father or loved one died from. That’s truly meant to be and a sign you’re on the exact path you’re supposed to be on. Truly inspiring. All your episodes are amazing btw.

22 years ago, I worked in the same building as a Trans woman who out did herself every day in high fashion. We worked in a somewhat dreary building in Midtown Manhattan, but she was always dressed to the 9's from the heels to the 36 inch wigs, if they were wigs who knows. The fur coats in the winter and the shorter dresses in summer was a sight for eyes. She never got an odd stare mainly because she passed so well, but if you knew, you knew. It made me feel special that even though I didn't know what floor she worked on, she worked in my building and that was cool.

The idea that being a woman is a feeling and not a biological reality is a fundamental denial of what it means to be a woman and of the struggles we have fought for centuries against patriarchy. Being a woman is not something that can be 'chosen' or a collection of stereotypes like wearing makeup, dresses, or high heels. These ideas are not only deeply misogynistic but also reinforce patriarchal notions that feminists have fought against for generations. Reducing us to a caricature, to a subjective idea, is equivalent to a sexist 'blackface' that erases our real experiences, oppressions, and struggles.
It is incredibly disappointing to see how some sectors of the left, who should be allies in the fight for equality, have embraced this postmodern and reactionary discourse, moving away from the material and structural bases that uphold inequalities. The queer delirium and the trans narrative that defines women as something anyone can 'feel' is not only antifeminist but also threatens fundamental rights we have fought for with effort.
We must remember that progressivism cannot be based on the denial of reality or the erosion of the spaces, rights, and categories of women. Act how you want, dress and paint yourself however you like-I don’t support conservative ideas-but don’t call yourselves women, because you are not. Saying that a man who wears makeup, high heels, and claims to 'feel like a woman' is the same as being a woman perpetuates oppression and strips women of our agency. This is not progress; it is a regression to patriarchal ideas disguised as inclusion. It’s time for the left to get back on track toward materiality and leave behind these narratives that only serve to divert and fragment our struggle for the real liberation.

Carmen really stood out on drag race. She was gorgeous as a man and as a woman, she got criticized for doing a lot of simple body-con looks, but I think it was just because everybody was so jealous! And after she announced her gender reassignment and transitioned she just kept getting more and more beautiful. And her beauty also radiates from within! Way to go Carmen!

This is a tweaked quote from Carmen that I am going to keep close to my heart for as long as I can,
"People who are going to love me, they’re going to love me. People who are going to vibe with me, they’re going to vibe with me. If I try to force it, it’s fake-what’s the point? I’m not going to spend my whole life keeping up an act."
There is a universal message here that we should all be able to connect with and understand. At the end of the day, we're all just people with a temporary existence, why spend your time not being you! Why spend that time making anyone feel less than.
“the true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members.” ~Gandhi

TS Madison is the voice and originator, and the meme started on TS Madison's social media channels. The meme has nothing to do with Carmen.
It's about getting a new wig and putting it on and feeling that the wig is giving Puerto Rican, and then it morphs to a joke about Jennifer Lopez, a Puerto Rican, playing Selena who was Mexican.

This is why I am a HUGE fan of yours #MattCullen. No matter who you are interviewing, you asked your questions that way that I was taught when I went through journalism school via the US Navy in 1991.
You have even allowed myself to really "listen" to what the person being interviewed has to say and it reminded me of some of the things I went through between the end of 2016 through most of 2017 when I did something called "extreme therapy" and listening to #CarmenCarrera (who I will admit that though she was drop dead gorgeous, because I was an Alexis Mateo & Shangela fan along with my mother - who passed away later in 2011 after Season 3 of RPDR aired - we weren't big fans).
Oh, the similarity to my therapy is what I had to do was go back to all the "big, emotional events in my life" but go back not as myself, but as the people that were there with me for whatever reason and understand why they say and/or did what they did, likewise with me and found out that sometimes, I was the "villain." When you ask for forgiveness for the things you said/did that may have hurt a loved one, friend or even an acquaintance, you may not be granted it. And that when you admit to your mistakes, instead of seeing it as a "character weakness" but it is a "character strength."
Excellent interview and though I have never met her, I want to say I'm sorry for being one of those outspoken "critics" of someone in my own community because when I read (not hear her as in this interview), I read the tweets, interviews not as she was saying it, but how I would say it. I applaud you Carmen, I respect you and I wish you nothing but peace and happiness for the rest of your life and keeping be lit af! xoxo

What? What? You just skipped right over Laverne Cox, Janet Mock, and Isis King on ANTM, etc.
Carmen is not the first. She may be the first you know about, but there are a lot of transwomen, like TS Madison, who paved the way for Carmen.
You may not like TS Madison, but she makes conversations happen, and she is an open book that is ready for any and all questions. Many transwomen like Carmen do not want to discuss some things. Madison is not, and through her comedy, people are realizing the commonality between all people. Madison fights for all trans people.

Carmen was a beautiful person during drag race, and her confidence of who she is makes her more beautiful. I saw her as this person before she started transitioning, and seeing her in this light, to see her growth in her activism, and her growth as a human being, is just so beautiful. I'm not sure how many times I can use the word "beautiful" to describe a human being like this, but this word seems correct for her. I loved her on her season of drag race, and I was so curious about her transition when she came out, and to see her growth over the years, again, just beautiful!!

Family is so important ❤. I just lost my dad ....i was angry, because of lost time. And, then? I realized, I was always there early on! And i will keep those memories with me always!❤

I loved this interview. Of course, with such an expert interviewer, who really is interested in the individuals, why would I be surprised? You put everybody at ease, but this really gave me another view of Carmen where, before my view of them was not positive and that they were adversarial. Great job! Wishing you both the best for the holidays.

My favorite woman interviewed by my favorite journalist. Carmen is the epitome of femininity and she's demure and defensive of our people she's sexy and mature and polite, and emotionally intelligent. She carries herself like a feminine, demure, polite graceful woman. She speaks for us so well. She's a trailblazer.
