  • Building your own firmware isn’t very difficult, can allow you to customize your printer a lot more, and there are tools like the Auto Build Marlin VS Code plugin that help make the process easier. In this video, I cover how to setup everything required to build your own firmware with VS Code and the Audio Build Marlin plugin. I also walk you through a couple of example builds.

      @@ronaldpeel7288 If the filament is breaking, there could be excessive moisture in it. If the print is going but no filament is coming out, that can be caused by a nozzle clog, filament grinding at the extruder, or no filament.

    this video was great i was having problems with getting the Creality firmware to probe my whole bed and setting the z offset with this i was able to get everything done and its working great now

    Tnx for the great video. I see 8 environment options for RC, RE, BTT, USB, Maple, etc. How do I know which one to use?

    Well put together Vid and it's well presented. The only problem I'm running into is when I do the test build I get "Error: Could not find one of 'package.json' manifest files in the package". Not sure what to do at this point. ? Help?

    Thank you very much for the tutorial! I have a question: In the Auto-build from Marlin it talks about environments, what are they?
    The firmware I'm trying to update is for an Ender 3 - 4.2.2, the environments suggested are:
    STM32F103RET6_creality
    STM32F103RET6_creality_Xfer
    STM32F103RET6_creality_maple
    I do not know what to pick or worse, why?

      Hi. Thanks for the feedback, you will want to choose STM32F103RET6_creality unless there is a specific reason to choose a different one and i have never had a reason to.

      @@3DPrintscape So I made a very large plotter with 4 stepper motors for 3 axis same as a 3d printer. Z axis has 35 mm movment of pen. When homing Z it drops pen and drags at the begin and end of drawing. At the begining of plot i want it to lift up as it goes to start plot. At the end I want it to do the same as it homes also to turn of fans. I have fan on controller and on Y stepper motor, it get hotish moving the pen holder. It all moves very fast. I so aprecate you taking your time t help. Ive played around with it but not working.

      it has a skr mini e3 v3 running at 2 amps. It is moving more mass than a printer. Faster acel and speed threw VSC and marling builds. moves really nicely.

    Thank you for this great looking idea. You must have been amazingly lucky, Unfortunately the PlatformIO won't install on Windows 7 and will not run under Windows 10 (with all the updates on a new laptop} on another one of my computers after being installed, it generates an error code when run "Error: Could not start home server:" the fix, going back to 2018 did not work either. You would think a bug going back to 2018 would be fixed by either VS or PIO, but looks not. Will try to use a example code and edit but uninstall still leaves numerous bit and pieces from PlatformIO!

      Hi. Thanks for the feedback. Im not sure whats causing the issue for you. I have this running on 4 computers at home (all windows 10) and i know many people in the community that have it running as well. Maybe UAC or AV?

    I believe the fix I found in the Platformio community fixed it and it accomplished a successful build. Here's what I found.
    "Maybe you have a corrupted download / package. Remove all folders in C:\Users\\.platformio\packages\ and C:\Users\\.platformio\.cache, then re-upload the project."
    It took a few minutes to rebuild itself and then ran the build. Thanks!!

      @@3DPrintscape right, simple fix though. I had my folder right under C: as suggested, only took a minute of Google search to find the answer. I made sure to put the whole explanation on in case anyone else ran into it.

    I never dreamed that I could forget as much coding as I have! I have watched your video over and over and found great information within. I have a problem with my upload portion. I get no errors with the build and after a week of fighting with it, I finally got there. on upload however it says that it cannot find the board/stm32f407.cfg. What do I do?

      Hi. It sounds like the environment isnt set right, or your using the wrong config. Try installing the marlin auto build plugin, it gives you the options available at build time. I have a video covering it.

    is there a way to save your build to go back and make tweaks later on if needed? like lets say i make a build and install the firmware but I decide a few days later that i wanted to have a 5x5 probe grid instead of a 4x4.. could i go back to the previous configuration for that build, make that small tweak and rebuild and install? does this make sense?

      Hi. Assuming you are using the same firmware every time, that would work. I keep a folder with my active firmware in it and make tweaks as needed. If you try to use newer firmware with the older config you will probably run into issues.

    I need info on an 8-bit board! I have a Geetech A10M with a GT2560 that I want to add a dual nozzle to and have no idea how to work with these boards yet

      Hi. The i was just talking to someone else about this. It sounds like the v2 examples wont work but BTT has an example on their github page that should be a good starting point.

    I need help, please. I have a SKR 2 board with TFT 35 v 3 and TMC 2209 drivers. I want to keep the existing limit switches. I am installing it into an Anet A8 Plus. I can’t for the life of me get a configuration to work, just not my area I suppose. Thank you

    when i try to compile after making my custom changes in the configuration.h file it give me an error saying that the Bltouch requires Z_Min_Probe_Endstop_Inverting set to false. i’m using an ender 3 pro with an skr mini e3 v2 with a bltouch v3. i’m using the marlin bug fix software as well.

      Hi. The recent config change on the bug fix line requires Z_Min_Probe_Endstop_Inverting set to false, so if you have it set to true, like i did before, it will need to be cahnged.

    Nice video. I installed everything as directed. I can't build because I keep getting "Error: motherboard is not defined in Configuration.h" I've tried a few different config files but get the same message.

      Hi. It sounds like you are using a config that expects the printer to be connected. Most of the 32 bit boards done require that.

    Currently using an Ender 3 V2, and just installed an SKR Mini E3 V3, TFT35, and BLTouch. Get tons of errors no matter which firmware I'm using, Marlin, Jyers, BTT, etc. Tried a different board and still same thing, it's as if the firmware doesn't even get pulled from the microsd upon insertion into the printer. Guess I could try a different card, but would love to see an E3V3 firmware vid in the future.

      @@3DPrintscape just to save you a lot of headache, there are many firmwares out there that are descriptive to work with the v3, but there is really only one that I found that works every single time. I'll share the link as soon as I get to my computer.

    Hi, I just finished rebuilding my Ender 3V2 ,increasing the size to 400 x 400 w/ a new heat mat addition . Z axis remains 250 & added a CR touch. I need to make those changes in the firmware & need some help. I have VS & MARLIN & CONFIG STANDING BY but just need some further guidance.

      Hi. You just need to change the bed size in the firmware to 400.

      I did everything according to your instructions but when I try to flash the firmware on my printer all I get is a blank screen & a screeching beeb sound. I tried it several times to no avail. All I changed was " Build Plate size, X 400 , Y 400, activated BL Touch & after a Failed notice activated Z homing. * that gave me a successful build but still no results. I must be missing something. HELP !

    This is my first attempt at trying this. I made it to the 7:15 mark in this video, but my builds just fail. I tried 5 times to get a successful build, but it's just not happening for me. I am using Marlin Bugfix v2.1.1 from the "Nightly" source, I just DL'ed it prior to this attempt. I will be setting this up on a BTT SKR Pro v1.2 mainboard.

      Hi. I dont have anything for Marlin on 8-bit but i do have this. th-cam.com/video/-8YQ_yAusTY/w-d-xo.html . That said, if you dont already have the board flashed, i would look at just upgrading to a SKR Mini or Creality 4.2.7 board, its less work overall.

    I have a question.. I keep getting Error: Build environment "STM32F103RET6_creality" is incompatible with BOARD_CREALITY_V4. Do you know what may be causing this? this is for a 4.2.2 board on e3v2. ive followed the same steps as you but no luck still

      Hi. They changed the environment details in January when the 256k boards started coming out. Try to use the marlin auto build plugin, it should help.

      Hi. You should have a .bin, not a .hex file. I think you choose the wrong environment or config example.

      @@3DPrintscape I was referencing the hex file showing in your video. But I've got it figured out. Klipper is up and working. Thank you very much for responding tho. I was under the impression I had to install Marlin then klipper but turns out I Don't have to install Marlin. I'm graduating from the 8-bit world to 32 finally. ;-) the M8P is a mini beast.

      @@3DPrintscape For some odd reason VSCode does not like to compile 8Bit board firmware, no matter how short I make the path. I can do 32 bit boards all day long with no problems.

      @@CloneC-bw3pj Interesting, i havent compiled 8 bit in a long time so i havent seen this. My guess is they made a change at some point on linux and the file path is still too long even close to the root of the drive.

      @@jonathanjo4273 The changes in the cconfiguration.h file would be as needed for what your doing, but not specific to the environment.

    Hi, This is all new to me. I got my 1st printer yesterday Ender3 pro and am trying to install new firmware to enable M600 (I need to change filament inside a layer).
    My board is 4.2.2 (Marlin 1.0.1) so I think all I need is a bin file on sd card.
    I tried building in VScode and it failed
    "The terminal process failed to launch: Path to shell executable "bash" is not a file of a symlink."
    I think this may only be the start because I have seen others with similar issues relating to dotnet.
    I am using Ubuntu 20.04 and I copied the extracted files to a folder on my desktop named Test as per your guide.
    I am getting a bit worried as I don't want to brick my new printer.

      Hi. Try to install the firmware from my site to see if that works for you. I havent tried building on linux, so im sure there are some changes that need to be accounted for.

      @@3DPrintscape Hi, I tried endlessly without success using the Marlin build approach you described here, even reverting to Windows 7 but that doesn't support the latest Python3. I eventually just used PlatformIO in VisualStudioCode which worked.

    Hi there. I keep encountering errors after I add my config files. I was able to do the test build with the mega2560 environment, but when I add the additional config files to the marlin folder, I end up with 5 different environments, STM32F10RE_creality (512k), STM32F10RE_creality_xfer (512k), STM32F10RC_creality (256k), STM32F10RC_creality_xfer(256k), and STM32F10RE_creality_maple (512k), and when I try to build any of them, I get "no such file or directory" error.

      I understand the different versions now since I found an article about newer 4.2.2 boards shipping with different model CPU's but I am still not sure where my missing files are.

      Hi. Try to move the folder closer to the root of your drive. If that doesnt work, try to clear out the .pio folder and try again.

    My install typically isn't working, platformio is installed but no icon? auto build is installed but only ever says initializing

      Hi. It sound like the platformio or C/C++ plugin didnt install right. I would try to uninstall all the plugins, reboot the computer, launch VS Code as admin, then reinstall the plugins.

      @@3DPrintscape thanks, I got it sorted. Had to rummage through windows and delete all the shrapnel after uninstalling pita but on the 5th attempt it worked.

      @@3DPrintscape the clear on the automarlin build. I did find the answer it is to remove the old compiled files. Not sure why thou.

      @@EdS808 Ah ok, i thought that was clean for some reason, not clear. It cleans up the old directory to allow you to get a completely fresh build. That's the recommended way to do things but most people don't unless there are issues.

    the same call function error 81 occurances throughout the entire Marlin 2.1x config.h
    marlin, c++, the config and playtformio are all disagreeing with each other while simultaneously depending on each other
    and this conflict temporarily makes marlin unbuildable as of this update
    this has never occured in prior versions
    and the legacy catalog of updates no longer has an errorless marlin. now to find a version of adv.h or .h config that will actually build.
    auto builder sites that offer web help do not think anything past an SKR mini v2 from big trew tech exists

      @@3DPrintscape last night I was printing a base for a bust when I checked on it the filament broke this is my third time at trying to print this the other times it was going through the printing movements but no filament was coming out.

      @@ronaldpeel7288 It sounds like you may have a partial nozzle clog. I would look at that first.

      Hi. Is that an error or just a warning and have you tried to reinstall the platformio and c/c++ plugin?

      @@3DPrintscape Thanks for the reply it looks that way, upgraded my 4.2.2 board to a 4.2.7 tried the Creality download but that did not work, I have managed to build the firmware with BLTouch that was on the old board but when I boot the printer I get EEPROM Version error on screen with options ignore / reset tried ignore and reset but have issues with controls not working nothing seems to respond, pretty new to firmware building. Thanks for any help you can give.

      @@pedroaltin6186 Can you try the firmware I have on my site? 3dprintscape.com/marlin-firmware-builds/ Also, ignore the warning then go into the menu and clear the eeprom.

      @@3DPrintscape Thanks tried your firmware with no luck still no movement, something is going on with this printer. I have downloaded the 4.2.7 from Creality flashed this no movement but when I flash the new 4.2.2 firmware things start to work Bed & Nozzle heat X Y & Z all move, think I will remove BLT & re-connect Z stop for now so I can start printing again.       @@pedroaltin6186 Double check the bltouch wiring, don't assume its correct in the harness. Ive seen it shipped wired like 10 different ways.

    This needs to be the top video on updating the firmware. Everything else, doesn't explain things to me, like I'm 5. I can write code for Allen Bradley and Siemens, but their programs are way more straight forward than doing custom work like this.

      I haven't been this disappointed since I vistted the mattaprint website and found it was a hyped front end.

      Hi. Ya, it does that and puts the right environment in the platformio.ini file. Its really geared towards beginners. I was questing if i should do a video on it and ended up doing it because ive had people ping me about it.
