    I've been to that canyon, hiked on that trail. It is beautiful and fascinating. I'm glad I went, but I can't say I will ever feel completely relaxed in a slot canyon, even on a sunny day.

      Just went today! I would say it was beautiful and I was relaxed but at the way end we got a weather report about rain 20 miles away and then got a flash flood emergency on our phone. I can tell you we high tailed it out of the slot canyon. It was so pretty though!

      @@jackpaitich1682 Too close for comfort! I'm glad all went ok for you, and I do hope to go there again one day! I'm from the East, so the way flash floods work out West is fascinating and terrifying and something I have very little experience with. I take those warnings super seriously, and of course don't know exactly how to read the weather patterns like I do at home, which is why I am a little on edge when hiking a trail like Little Wild Horse!

    I read a story, possibly reddit but can't say for sure. The 'teller' was experienced, had gone into slots before. The day he and his buddy went the chance of t storms was low, wasn't quite the season and the chance was under 10% so they went. And like this unexpected, they heard the thunder, saw the light darken. They were in a bad section for refuge; but they had passed a safer area not long before so they booked back to that place. The water was already rising but they managed to climb up and away. Even the most experienced can sometimes be caught despite being on guard

      here's an exercise. go on g maps and pick a slot canyon that you might "hike"..and then follow the water's path up into the mountains. then measure just how far away the mountain range is from your canyon. then consider that orographic lift in the mountains will usually create an environment where t-storms can form, usually at a certain time of day + by season. people forget that it's not about whether it's raining on YOU. it's about whether it's raining anywhere from here to the mountain runoff path. that's a lot of ground to be aware of. you REALLY have to go with someone who knows meteorology and the local weather systems.

    As beautiful as Utah is and it is magnificent, when it rains bad things can happen and happen quickly. In 2015 a flash flood in southern Utah killed 21 people in a single day -- 8 of them in a slot canyon in Zion NP.

    I really hate that happened to those kids . I lost one of my classmates to a flooded spillway when I was in second grade . I think about him from time to time. Over the years a few people I knew have drowned . One crossed a swollen river one night while hunting by himself . He was never found . Two brothers dove from a boat they rented and the current swiftly took there lives . Only the kids were left on the boat . That was a very sad day . Again to friends of mine were fishing one morning on a boat and failed to come back . Found them the next day . If you are a hiker of these low places include a flotation device in your pack .

      Naïve and devastated parents, that's who allowed this to happen.
      This reminds me of a family who nearly died not far from where I live. It happened several years ago when the father followed a mapping program, driving his family deep into the woods, in a snow storm, in the middle of winter. He was terribly naïve and ultimately died as a result. Somehow his family was rescued. The locals that heard the story couldn't believe that a husband and father would be so careless. But the guy simply had no knowledge or understanding of the dangers of cold weather. He came from a warm climate to the South. It just goes to show that there are a lot of people that do not respect the power of nature and do not understand their own fragile existence.

    • @jamiegoodman8172
      @jamiegoodman8172 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That "ankle deep" water can sweep you off your feet and down the canyon in a second, it's flowing so fast. And when you're in the slots, the same amount of water is forced into a channel that is maybe just a couple of feet wide, so it then becomes 5, 10, 15 feet high (or more). That's why slot canyons are so dangerous. These folks had made it back OUT of the slots and into the wider canyon, which is why the water wasn't as deep.
      Search for the video of Antelope Canyon, where the water is flowing OVER the canyon, and the slots below are some 50-60 feet. If you get caught in the slots, there is absolutely nowhere to go, and the flood WILL sweep you away, with very faint chance of survival.

      I discovered Southern Utah in 1980 and fell in love with the area and because I was self-employed I was able to vacation there a couple times a year for almost two decades. I love nothing better than hiking the Red Rock country but it was very different back then. My first place I ever went to was the Needles District and boy was it primitive; it still actually is compared to other places in Canyonlands. But at the time the Visitor Center, if you want to call it that, was a single wide trailer with no air conditioning. The rest of the campground at the Needles is still pretty much undeveloped last I checked, I quit going around 2,006. I climbed Angels Landing for the first time in '82 and there were four other people at the top. Now there's dozens upon dozens at the top. And the line at the base of the final was sent sometimes has 100 people, it looks like Everest it's so overrun with people the first three times I climbed Angels Landing which was all in the early 80s, I seldom met another soul going up. I don't even go there anymore, it's so depressing because of the crowds.

      Like all of Utah, it’s gone forever. The west and especially Utah, has changed more in the last 30 years than the previous 100 and it’s accelerating. And it’s all due to the hordes trying to get away from our failing coasts and cities. As Ed abbey said, unlimited population growth and development in a finite are the surest way to the destruction of everything that is wild or beautiful or free. Utah went from 1.4 million in 1980 (when it was already over populated) to 3.5 million today. At the same time the US went from 225 million to 335 million and it didn’t get a sf bigger. The planet went from an astonishing 4.4 billion to an unbelievable 8 billion. This is why the idiot Biden can pass all the ridiculous bills he wants and we won’t make any sustainable progress on climate change. Like all our environmental problems it is caused by over population not a lack of EVs or solar panels.

      It's not necessarily global warming but weather is more intense with more extremes because of human action for sure.

    WOW! That was one humongous torrential rain. NOT! Haha. If that little flow scares ya or God forbit, keeps you stuck in one place for hours, you do not need to be outside, period.

      You clearly have never hiked in Utah and been in a Slot Canyon. Do you even know what a Slot Canyon is? If the only thing you can stand on is the Sandy Bottom of a vertical sided Slot Canyon when 8 ft of water comes through at 40 mph, you would not be making that comment possibly because you didn't live to tell about it. The people in the video were lucky that there was a place where they could get up and away from the water. That's not the slot area. I suggest you go look at some more pictures of Slot Canyons. What you're seeing in the video is not the slot part of the canyon. It's probably a widening somewhere in the middle of the canyon.
