The only thing really wrong with this movie was the whole Germans = bad thing. WWI was pretty close to an amoral war. The Kaiser was no Hitler. It was a tragedy, an avoidable one, a regional conflict that got out of control. Sure, it lit the fuse for WWII. But the simplistic Germans bad/British and Allies good doesn't work here.
Ares was on the Allied side to write the Treaty of Versailles, a treaty that every historian acknowledges made WWII inevitable. A nice little plot device, I will admit. However, he was on his own side in the movie.
They didn't put Germans bad thing it's was the people behind it which was legit the whole point of the movie. Showing how people are good and bad also how people follow the leader and etc
Only criticsm that I had with the movie other than the villans being bad was that they didn't show WWI didn't have anyone on the moral high ground. All of the things we would call war crimes nowadays were performed by both sides on a semi regular basis.
+cpmosso9 You're not the only one that noticed that. The only people that thought that WWI German soldiers were nazis are those that don't know history in the first place.
Alan Christopher, yea that's what kind of bugged me when Wonder Woman says she wants to free the men from corruption, but then blows through them killing them like it's nothing and making fun of a guy with PTSD felt odd.
I love these videos but I'm sure they have a couple of people writing a script so credit to their humor. Voice over guy nails the lines every single time :)
All the people complaining about it being in WW1 and not WW2 don't know basic history. Yes, the movie takes place during the end of WW1, but the armistice and subsequent treaty of versailles were the ground for Hitler's rise to power and WW2. That's what they meant by "origin story for WW2".
Epic? It was a movie about a overpowered person that couldn't get anything done on her own....Chris Pine's character does EVERYTHING except for the ONE fight he couldn't win, against Ares...but it was still his influence that allowed WW to figure it out and win in the end.
TbT Honestly this movie could have still betrayed this message without having the Ares lightning battle and that is probably the biggest flaw of the movie.
This is instantly one of my all-time favorite Honest Trailers!!! I love many of the lines you all have already brought up, plus "your friend has PTSD... Let him go home!"😂🤣💀
How the heck did DC expect me to see Remus Lupin as evil? Thats like JK Rowling saying that Voldemort was just misunderstood.... He's Moony... he's Teddy's dad... He's a freaking ball of angsty werewoulfy cotton candy
Because Remus Lupin isn't the only character he's played. David Thewliss plays the German father in The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, & several other characters who seem good but have a dark side to them. In the Harry Potter series his dark side is his lycanthropic disease, forcing him to become a werewolf under the light of the full moon.
sandy yuda, they actually touch on that plot point pretty heavily, she initially believes that that is what will happen but then Ares straight up tells her that that is not the case and that humans do evil all on their own and with the help of Chris pine's character she comes to terms with this fact and believes that Mankind is worthy of saving even though they do evil
So... a German officer creates a weapon of mass destruction with the help of an evil scientist, the protagonist who is an enhanced person recruits a team of soldiers from a bar, gets into a warzone and rescues people, gets detached from their lover shortly after admitting their feelings, and a guy named Steve (who's played by a Chris) saves a massive city by taking down a plane full of said weapon and sacrificing himself in the process. *Sounds familiar*
I definitely got some Captain America First Avenger vibes from this movie too when I saw it. I did enjoy it though and like most people, it was better than the other DCEU movies.
"...that seems to forget that the Germans in WWI were not the Nazis." YEP. It was painfully obvious that the reason this took place in WWI instead of WWII was to avoid being written off as 'Captain America: The First Avenger, Rule 63 Edition,' but...they didn't do anything with it. I spent the whole movie waiting for the scene when WW realized the folly of labeling the German soldiers the 'bad guys.' When the trench warfare scene came around, I thought 'Okay. This is when it happens.' She'll single-handedly take no-man's land, but then demand that the soldiers on both sides stop fighting. And, even though she naively thinks that all of this is Ares' fault, her words would still resonate among soldiers on both sides who had a hell of a lot in common with one another in spite of ostensibly being enemies. It'd basically be a spin on the famous 'Christmas Truce' from the same war, albeit with the bittersweet twist being that the war has been going on for so long and gotten so bad that the ceasefire is fueled by a sense of despondence more than brotherly love. And if the movie wanted to give Wonder Woman more drive to find Ares, maybe something would happen to spark conflict again, like a misfired gun or artillery shell landing or something, and the optimistic young woman who had thought that it was only Ares' meddling that soured the goodness in the hearts of men would now look on in horror as these young, weary soldiers were spurred back into violence against one another. But, uh...none of that happened. Instead, Wonder Woman occupied the attention of a couple machinegun nests, the British soldiers charged, and the Germans were pushed back. The only difference between that and any other day of trench warfare was that Wonder Woman happened to be there for it.
A super human carrying a shield to go into battle alongside allied soldiers in order to stop the conspiracy of a fictional German army division, while falling in love with a human intelligence officer. That sounds familiar to you guys?
@Franz Styles super-human, not a human that is super but a person superior to humans. English is an extremely flawed language. Look up any details on WW and other gods/demi/mutants "superhuman" is the term used for all of it. Superhuman strength, intelligence, durability yadda yadda.
To be fair, Doomsday WAS a Cryptonian, meaning he was almost if not as strong as Superman. And we have been shown time and time again, that a Cryptonian is WAAAAY Stronger than a Greek God....Also a Cryptonian can only be killed with Kryptonite while a god can be killed by another god, and Diana is a goddess...so...there :D
The best of the DCEU so far. I like how it has a lighter (but not lightweight) tone, and actually winds up being thematically coherent with some of BvS's themes (is man inhererently good or evil?). And I actually liked BvS ultimate edition. But how much better could it have been had it been preceded by a batman solo flick and wonder woman solo flick, giving it themes a proper context and platform of developed characters? BvS: dawn of the trinity, that would've been awesome. And then you could start that Justice league stuff. But no, someone in WB decided they had to play MCU catch-up instead. Stories should be told the best way they can, not to just catch up with another franchise's box office wave.
I think they righly fear that the superhero craze is starting to draw to an end, or at least on its downward slope. All that intelectual property is highly inflated right now in terms of dollars, and will pop like the hindenberg once the people are finally sick of superhero films. They will still be valuable of course, but no where near what they are worth to day, so DC fears missing their only shot and is throwing everything that may stick while the times are (somewhat) "good".
Alicia Bell It has nothing to do with racism. Look up to where the territory of Marocco belonged at that time. France has a strange laws regarding nationality, basically even people in overseas territories were considered French (as citizens, of course, not ethnically).
Honestly the movie shouldn’t have had her fight Ares at all. It would have been an amazing message that fits WW1 that no one thing makes men evil, or that anyone is born evil. Situation just makes people do evil things and brings out the worst in all of us. Yah the ending is definitely the worst part of the movie all so they can have an epic finale with lightning and bright light, even though I am sure most would be okay without a finale like that.
Bobby Ferg Couldn't agree more. The film culminated for me when Diana killed the German general and then she saw that nothing happened. I genuinely thought and hoped that Ares wouldn't be incarnated into anyone. But yeah, you need a final showdown against some pure evil so that you may please the stakeholders.
"No, Charlie. Who will sing for us?" Darnit, she is already the prettiest woman, like, ever and has all kind of superpowers, does she really also have to have the ability to make you feel wanted and appreciated with a single sentence? Or. . .maybe all those things are connected? Seriously though, I'm not even Charlie and I was ready to go with her!
He would propably have a decent transformation scene, before becoming a weird-looking werewolf who gets tricked by a 13yearold schoolgirl making noices. So its pretty much the end of wonder woman, with "werewolf" exchanged for suit of armor and "tricked" exchanged with getting his ass kicked, "13yearold" exchanged with a greek goddess and noices with "magical powershield"

And he also was in the Blade movies, which are comic book adaptions. Marvel if I'm not mistaken.
The Great Hollywood Chris-Off made me laugh WAY too hard.
Same.
I had to pause and read the list...lol
Not a single joke about how Ares is played by the same actor as Remus Lupin?
You disappoint me.
Where's the joke?

No, you're just a Harry Potter nerd.
Coulda called him something like.
"Bad Moon Rising"
"A Howling Disappointment"
"Remus The God of Wolves"
Not a single joke about all other roles all actors ever did ? What a shame.

TheStevenB This made my day 😂💀
Also has a German villain who kills their superiors and has a smarter sidekick.
The “Great Hollywood Chris-Off” describes the leading actor role fight pretty well!
The only thing really wrong with this movie was the whole Germans = bad thing. WWI was pretty close to an amoral war. The Kaiser was no Hitler. It was a tragedy, an avoidable one, a regional conflict that got out of control. Sure, it lit the fuse for WWII. But the simplistic Germans bad/British and Allies good doesn't work here.
imo both sides were evil killing millions of their own men against machine guns, gas etc.
The movie didn't really do that. Ares was on the Allied side, after all.
The Winners write history
I started clapping when they brought up that ww1 Germans were not nazis; I thought I was the only one that noticed that.
cpmosso9 yes right??
Yeah i didn't like that in the movie
Can the Chris-Off be a recurring thing? We need to keep score.
Let's just hope it doesn't get nasty. Kris Kristofferson looks like a biter.
With that low of a score? I'd be a biter too.

That “league of her own” reference was quite thoughtful. If she was the right age,Geena Davis would have been another perfect pick for Wonder Woman.
She would have been perfect back in the day and wouldn't have had the accent problem.

All the people complaining about it being in WW1 and not WW2 don't know basic history.
Yes, the movie takes place during the end of WW1, but the armistice and subsequent treaty of versailles were the ground for Hitler's rise to power and WW2. That's what they meant by "origin story for WW2".
Thank you for saying I had no idea
... it's so similar to the first Captain America though, sometimes I think they just set it in World War 1 to change things up a bit.
There was no WW1 at the time is ended. People DO NO KNOW YET one more war will come. At that times it was called WW or Great War. No numbers.

"confusing self-absorbed doubters with heroism" - a very acute observation!
WW is *EPIC* precisely because it has none of this sh*t. Love the movie!
The movie wasn't great.
Ah yes, that observation was less than 90°
Epic? It was a movie about a overpowered person that couldn't get anything done on her own....Chris Pine's character does EVERYTHING except for the ONE fight he couldn't win, against Ares...but it was still his influence that allowed WW to figure it out and win in the end.
You killed me at the end.. lmfao "um, your friend clearly has ptsd. Let him go home!!!"

My favourite comment that Ive read today.
Did anyone wonder what would have caused WW2 if Ares was dead? That kind of proves his point.
Well, that might be the lesson Diana has learned in this movie: humans can be evil by themselves.
In the comics, the story was set in WW2, so...
captain america first avenger is set in WW2 so ...
+Mauro Vaz different universe
TbT Honestly this movie could have still betrayed this message without having the Ares lightning battle and that is probably the biggest flaw of the movie.

He was evil in Dragonheart.

Well, at least we have Capt America to help in WW2. Wait...
sandy yuda, they actually touch on that plot point pretty heavily, she initially believes that that is what will happen but then Ares straight up tells her that that is not the case and that humans do evil all on their own and with the help of Chris pine's character she comes to terms with this fact and believes that Mankind is worthy of saving even though they do evil
I love how all the requests were from women
aP3X_JAYY Yeah I noticed that too♥️
Hah, I usually don't catch subtle and irrelevant details like that, but I actually did catch it.
So... a German officer creates a weapon of mass destruction with the help of an evil scientist, the protagonist who is an enhanced person recruits a team of soldiers from a bar, gets into a warzone and rescues people, gets detached from their lover shortly after admitting their feelings, and a guy named Steve (who's played by a Chris) saves a massive city by taking down a plane full of said weapon and sacrificing himself in the process.
*Sounds familiar*
I definitely got some Captain America First Avenger vibes from this movie too when I saw it. I did enjoy it though and like most people, it was better than the other DCEU movies.

"...that seems to forget that the Germans in WWI were not the Nazis."
YEP.
The only difference between that and any other day of trench warfare was that Wonder Woman happened to be there for it.
thank you, finally an intelligent statement about this movie

Afiq Khairul this is one of the most honest things I've heard in a long time.
IKR? Ppl keep saying it isn't good. It's not the best, but it did great considering other DC movies.
"is man inhererently good or evil?" how was that a theme of bvs? xD other than one phrase said by alfred "turns good men cruel" lol
I thought the theme of BVS was Martha
primeholyassasin20 the movie had the same dark tone/filter TBH. That's why I love dc

Yes cuz that's what he is. Plus that is what he opted to look like. He can change what he looks like you know.

Hey was that Lupin as Ares? Wonder what would happen if he turned into a werewolf. :P
