    When I was in college my roommate was a music major, full ride scholarship. He was an incredible piano player. He played at all kinds of school events including fundraisers. He also played at Carnegie Hall and did pay gigs all the time. Sold of ton of cd's to make some extra cash. Student athletes are literally the only members of a campus forbidden from making money on their talents. And it is because the NCAA and schools have no interest in sharing the vast amounts of profit they pull in. The NCAA as an entity made 1.18 billion in 2019. Most of that from the massive TV deals they have. And listening to coaches talk about amateurism when they make 5 mil a year to coach a sports team is total BS. It is a business for everyone but the players.

      I agree with you. When I was at Stanford, I had friends who were engineering and computer science majors. They were permitted to make whatever they can especially with Silicon Valley Companies. I don't see why some well-known jock shouldn't be able to get an off campus job with PR, Marketing companies.

    • @MrLarryLessor
      @MrLarryLessor 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not exactly - It's not "total BS" for coaches to talk about that:
      If a Coach makes $5 million per year - which compared with many NBA or NFL or MLB players is not THAT much, considering how much work a lot of those coaches have to do to be a "$5m" man or woman - they have a responsiblity to get players to play AS A TEAM.
      THat has become increasingly harder - since there are more Prima Donna's ... players who think they are entitled and super-special -..... they think they are above everyone else.
      Coach Geno talks about it with UCONN: He said "A lot of players their 1st week here at UCONN... they realize "Im not better than everyone else who's ever played here....
      Then they get scared about it. Then they think "Well I'll show you how good I am .... I just won't listen to anything you say"
      COach Geno has seen this diva act year after year for over 30 years....
      And the players are often ungrateful - especially now compared to 20 years ago - unappreciative of scholarship offers etc. Bc so many schools kiss their Butt. They feel like "I can go anywhere and I don't have to listen to you the coach. I'm the star player so YOU have to listen to what I want and think"
      It's a business for a lot of administrators -
      But for the COACHES who want to win CHAMPIONSHIPS, it's not just a business- it's about building a winning program, building a winning system, mutliple years of titles etc etc.

Do the work, get drafted, then get paid. If you do it right it will lead to a great life. But just showing up in college 99% of those kids aren't going to be the standout they were in high school. It's a ME attitude, nothing to do with team at all. That's another reason why coaches are making what they do, corralling a bunch of look at me kids and getting them to perform as a team. Players should not get compensated period! It creates a competitive disadvantage where some schools like Duke with hundreds of millions have more money to pay their players than say a smaller school like Creighton. Even if there is a salary cap it still does not work.
    Schools will also have to pay for all athletes, swimmers, soccer players, baseball players, etc. This is an enormous burden to the budgets of smaller schools and this idea should not be implemented at all.
    This is also unfair to the non athlete students who have to pay for their education while scholarship athletes who are already getting a free ride are now getting compensation.
    It cannot work. Athletes need to realize they will be compensated when they turn professional but money given to athletes in the college world.

    This topic is absurd! Is an average of a $50K education opportunity not "being paid"? How many of these athletes were awarded scholarships over academic performers, musicians, artists, etc! Listen to signing day interviews and try to convince me that some of these athletes would have been offered anything if not for their athleticism. I'm not a nerd nonathlete by the way. I worked hard to juggle both. It's a sad day that we will pay vast amounts of money to many to folks that have had easier paths than many academic achievers. How about paying true educators that kind of money or the 1% of us miltary that volunteered to protect our freedoms. True exploitation is having people being shot at for the small compensation we readily accepted. Welcome to the age of entitlement!
