So you need an 'I' to say that the "I' do not exist. Without an 'I' you couldn"t dismiss it ; animals are not into non-dual theories for instance (as they lack an 'I').
He doesn't say that there isn't an I, only that its not a big deal that it is happening, the ego, its like imagine having an auditory condition were you get pissed when someone shmecks with their mouth open while eating, and contrast that with hearing nice music, now both can be happening but without making either its own separate thing thats happening, its all apart of one experience. I dont know if this makes any sense tbh
