The good news is that very soon the construction of the Maya train will start, it will connect Merida - Cancun - Chiapas, and a few other states of Mexico, it will be a very fast train, I hope you enjoy Merida and that you find a good home and the lifestyle that you are looking for, welcome to Mexico.

You two sound just like my wife and I on how you decided on Merida. We applied for our preliminary residence visa at the Mexican consul in Abu Dhabi. We had to provide proof of funds I.e. we needed US$200k apart from the purchase of our house. Vehicles are expensive but might as well buy a new car as 2nd hand ones are way overpriced. If you want to work you need to possibly prepare for that when applying for the residence visa as it’s difficult to change visa status. Medically you can sign up for the local plan which is as good as the high priced private insurance.
I’m back in the U.K. now but my wife Is still there and I hope to go back soon.
Good luck with the move, hope you like humidity

I'm happy for you guys. I also was in law enforcement, as a Child Abuse Forensic Investigator and later manager over a team of investigators. Took a early retirement @ 53 and looking at the Yucatan.
I've travelled a lot over the years, the Dominican Republic is also check your boxes but...not as many expats as Mexico.
I got bad arthritis in both shoulders from years of competitive bodybuilding so the warm weather is a must- I feel you! I'm moving from Silicon Valley in the summer to the Gulf of Mexico, Sarasota/Tampa area to invest in a home (and home base). And then spend sometime in Mexico. I love the colonial homes in Merida! Best of times after being in a tough profession. God Bless you guys.

You had a meritorious job in forensics, bless you, as you must have helped identify and prevent much child abuse. Mexico is the easiest place in the world to move to and still maintain the right to work, buy land etc. I live since 25 years or maybe 30 in Thailand and i am moving to Mexico, after three years of study and the current situation, Mexico stands out as the best place to be. It also has no locjkdowns and is all green zone again, and do life is back to normal, the only place on earth right now where you can go to the restaurant bar and disco without having to worry if you will be refused as a 2nd class citizen because you forgot your proof of no covid - They also have had a massive drop this month in daily cases, and i do not see Mexico in any kind of super covid disaster... USA and UK and Europe are the orst. Thailand in Krabi where i am in the south is also more or less normal life. But the Western Developed World with its lengthy due processes and inept politicians are doing worse than many poorer countries. Viva Mexico! and may everyone who moves there, be glad they did! One should leanr the language, study the history and culture though, for me i would hate to be living in a country and not be able to speak read and write fluently, That is the first thing i taught myself in Thailand, and it was worth it. When in Rome, do as the Romans do

On another note. If you are going to buy a house or land be very aware that there are loads of scammers this also applies to builders. There is a guy that we recommended to all of our guests (Carlos Betancourt) who went over and above what you would expect and he and is wife a lovely people.
Always allow US$10k for solar panels so you can run your AC as and when you want. Unlike the U.K. the solar panel system really works and is very beneficial

Welcome to my country pam. I hope you enjoy your retirement here, please dont be afraid of the language most places speak a little bit of english. Specially in tourist places like merida, cancun, acapulco, puerto vallarta, ajiji, cabos, or my hometown of san miguel de allende where most people are shocked to see how many americans live here. We have people from canada, uk, corea, and china. Ooh and pam please dont listen to all that crazy stuff you see and hear on tv about mexico, its not like that BUT newspapers and tv rating have to sale so let make the story bigger you know what i mean. Now i cant tell you that is not all true but what you see on tv or hear on newspapers its 99 percent bad guys against bad guys, or government against bad guys. So please dont let the media scare you from coming down to my beautiful country and enjoy life😉 trust me if you never been here you will love it, specially the weather, the beaches, the food. Welcome

Merida is a nice city .A bit hot that’s the drawback. I’m a Brit from Luton and am self employed in Dallas, but have been to Merida a number of times. I love Mexico in general and could retire in there.Try Cabo and that coast is nice too.
I’d rent the house in England for the time being. Best of luck ! Hope it all works out.

Good luck on your move to Mexico. Sounds like you have the right outlook to adapt to a foreign culture. Have read that Yucatan Spanish is somewhat different compared to the rest of the country because of the Mayan influence. Hope your instruction will still serve you well. Was thinking that if/when ferry service is resumed from Florida, maybe you could buy a car there and bring it over to the Yucatan.

Have you visit the area east of the airport of Mérid? There are beautiful residences there.
If you want to keep your windows open, you might not want to live at the colonial downtown, too much concrete and humidity at summer.

The advantage of living in Mexico is if you find the electronic items too expensive you can travel to the United States and buy a good brand TV at much better price than in mexico.

Sorry 'bout your tv being left in the U.K. if you ever come to Miami and want to buy one, I work at a local retail, and I can find you an Open box that's cheaper than a new one. You can ship it via Maritime to Mexico, it might be cheaper than buying one in Mexico.

No work visa needed Nicola. If you retire and buy a house and have money on bank and leter from bank, you get a four year visa and can work immediately even open a street noodle stall if you want or sell on a marketplace. If you buy a home or land and move to live in Mexico you are allowed one tv Michael. there is a list on the mexican gov site (in Spanish and english), saying what you can bring in. When you immigrate to a country, most countries allow you one vehicle, one tv, one stereo, one fridge.. etc. (personal belingings). Just rent half a container. I am taking my 65 Inch 4K Tv Mate. You have chosen the best and easiest place to immigrate to, Thailand cannot buy land. Mexico oyu can buy land and also once you have your home, or your 4 year visa, the second visa, one year in, you can get permanent residency. The right to work is instant as soon as you change from tourist to resident visa. But if you choose a less touristic area to buy your home, both the land and building work, or the ready made house. With the retirement resident visa you can work, buy land, and also are equally eligible for all medical services as Mexicans, no differentiation. Mexican NHS included! Also no covid lockdowns no jabs needed and no restrictions nationwide. Its the only country where life is back to normal ion 2021. Pero tienes que aprender Español. Learn Spanish or you will always be a touristic price victim. The place you chose is too close to the high priced tourism to meet genuine people.. move away from there to a non tourist inhabited place, and learn to live with the locals, when in Rome, do as Romans do, if you hang out with expats you will never learn the language, and always feel set apart, and one day wish to go home again. If you integrate and become a mexican at heart and speak the lingo, you will be free to live in any area you wish, and make your house a 5th of the price

  • @rayvogensen2983

Mérida is in an interesting area of Mexico but it has two disadvantages for me. Every month of the year has an average high temperature of thirty or above. The average low is also almost twenty Celsius every month. Living in Mérida would be like living in Manaus in the Amazon. Hot and humid. You would spend a lot on air conditioning. Another problem for me is the flatness of the Yucatán Peninsula. I like to have hills nearby. One reason why a lot of expats move to the Chapala area or to San Miguel de Allende is the climate. Never hot or cold. I would like to visit Mérida but not to live. Duo Lingo is not a good way to learn Spanish. It is meant for translation. Babbel is much better but it is not free.
