I would assume that in the long term, these aircraft are actually meant for use on shorter long haul flights between Italy/North America east coast and Italy/Middle East. They're currently only being used on short haul routes such as Amsterdam/Italy for training/familiarization purposes only.

Yes, we think you’re right! The aircraft are meant to fly on Italy - Africa routes, among others.
