A thru hiker may FEEL entitled to things but that does not necessarily mean they are. That guy smelling like shampoo who worked all week too get out for what little time he / she can afford is entitled to the same opportunities on trail as younger folks who don't have families and can take the time away more easily or simply people in different circumstances who can be more enthusiastic about hiking.

      @tommybewick 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +23

Exactly! The snobbery of people that call themselves "thru hikers" is sometimes nauseating. I've been working for over 20 years raising a family and waiting to retire so I can thru-hike in a few years. In the meantime, I guess I'm not really a hiker? I'm sorry I don't smell as bad as you do! But I wouldn't trade my life or my family for anything.

Playing devil's advocate a little here, but I think it's a two-way thing, and definitely circumstantial. It's understandable how a thru-hiker can be put-out and get "entitled" feelings in certain situations, if they've been hiking for longer or further. But on the flip side, it's easy for a weekend warrior to have their feelings slip into the "entitled" zone too; if it's your one day/ night out that year that you've been looking forward to for months, it's very easy to focus on your own experience and priorities over someone who's lucky to be out for a few months at a time.
And there's nothing wrong with having those feelings either way, especially in the heat of the moment. The important thing is to be aware if it, acknowledge it, and try to keep it in check.
At the end of the day, the important thing is that everyone is out there for the same core reason, so mutual respect is key.
Thanks Kyle and Taylor for discussing this point. It's something we'll all have been guilty of in one way or another at some point. Acknowledging it and being willing to discuss it shows growth and is something we can all learn from.
      Thanks for another great episode!

I am glad you both are reflecting on mistakes, myths, admitting what a thru hike might do to you mentally, not necessarily bring out the best in yourself. How refreshing. This “sense of entitlement” applies to so much in life for all. Good message to be considerate of others, more often, just day to day.

One of the worst parts of the AT was the “sickness” that seems to take hold where people begin to rush and try to outdo one another for miles… it’s becomes an obsession and it does serve to keep people apart rather than bring them together.

Like, not gonna lie, like, you know? Taylor and Kyle are competing with each other to see who can say “like” more often. Kyle says “not gonna lie” like he’s Rain Man without his medication. Not gonna lie, I like, lost, like, a couple brain cells - not gonna lie - watching just 10 min of this video. Like, you know? Reminds me of this time I was stuck walking behind some guy on his phone and he kept telling the other guy, “ya know what I’m sayin’?” Not gonna lie. And you know who Kyle’s favorite President is? That’s right… George Washington. Why? Because his motto was: “not gonna lie”. Except for that one time about the cherry tree. Like, you know?

Those are Army Rangers in training in the Georgia section of the AT. It actually disgusts me that privileged through hikers are so disrespectful.
I’m disgusted by entitled and privileged people in general. Not all through hikers are like that, some are grateful to be there. But guys, you aren’t special, I’m sorry you really aren’t. The journey is certainly hard but people are going through hard journeys everywhere, in many areas in life, often not by choice.

I think what you were trying to say about "trail angels" is that a person who is doing something with a motive outside " the goodness of his heart" should not get the designation of "trail angel." I met a great guy when I needed a ride to a trailhead. He gave me some great advice and even took me to a place to stash my backpack so I could slackpack back to that place. He even maintained parts of the AT. However, transporting me to the trailhead was a business arrangement, so he's not a trail angel at that moment. At some other tine, he could drop off water anonymously, which would make him a trail angel in that capacity but not as a shuttle driver. The designation should be reserved for someone doing something to support hikers without monetary reward. Fresh Ground certainly deserves the designation.

I literally just got so cranky on my last hiking trip about the competitive camping at 4pm. I had done over 12 miles and was dealing with an injury. I couldn't pass up these half occupied sites like others and I was annoyed bc I felt like I worked harder but these chill mfs were still looking down on me for just setting up on their turf. I'm sure maybe they didn't mind but I can see how the entitlement goes both ways. Just tromping into camp might've come across as entitled, I didn't ask if they mind. But expecting to have a campsite all to yourself by 4pm came off as entitled to me as well. We're human, we're all jerks

I’ve never understood why people dont just make up a cool story and use whatever name they want to be called. No one would ever know its made up. Seems better than having to endlessly repeat a story about how a stranger gave your trail name.
It wouldnt need to be an outlandish story just something mundane that described your personality, behavior or quirks along with a name that actually meant something.
The whole bestowing a trail name on someone is really quite bizarre in the first place.

Enjoying this episode as my husband and I follow both of you :) When thru hikers we follow get free stuff, we say they are “getting their grift on.” Honestly, I would love to meet our favorite thru hikers to spot them a dinner and hear the stories first hand, but I would feel like a total loser if they were laughing at it later. Plus it could feel a little creepy for the hiker to have these too old farts show up as fans. I imagine it’s truly a thing that people feel like they know you since they see you all the time on TH-cam and social media, and in some cases it could actually turn threatening/dangerous. Anyway, enjoy following you both! Best wishes

theres plenty of people on the AT that are "trail angels" but are actually a business. you're probably more likely to encounter them if you're section hiking.
my related controversial opinion- the real "trail angels" who follow the bubble up the trail doing things to "help" (as if its a charitable cause or something) thru hikers aren't "trail angels", they're groupies.

I live in Appalachia, by the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. I don't know why, but I've gotten so over all the "supernatural" Appalachia tropes. Especially on TikTok, the people talking about "what not to do in Appalachia". It's all BS. It's fun to listen to, and I've put a lot of time into listening to them, but it's gotten so big that it's morphing into something Appalachia and our folk lore never was...

Competitive is fine but don’t shame people. Everyone is just doing their best and you don’t know the reasons they are doing it, what mental state they are in etc. I think fine to be competitive but you have to be compassionate. Like, if you can’t say something positive, maybe just zip it because like that guy that made a comment that now lives in your guests head forever, you just don’t know the impact a few simple words or your attitude can have on someone.
