      Well, I love the WHOLE visual look of this movie - including the costumes, sets, the very eccentric space-craft designs, and the psychedelic imagery (like the vibrant multicolored alien sky and the cosmic whirlpool that transports the heros to the alien universe) - all very stylish and original looking.

    Fun Facts about Brian Blessed (the hawk man leader with the beard) - Hes good friends with patrick stewart (they went to the same acting school), he helped a woman give birth in a park in london and bit through the umbilical cord, he taught keanu reeves how to meditate, he punched a polar bear in the face who was attacking people in his camp, hes climbed mount everest when he was in his 70's, hes completed 800 hours of astronaut training and hes patron of a dog sanctuary in the UK. Finally he has actually had a boxing match with the dalai llama..... im not even kidding

      Another fact about Brian Blessed is that when he was a kid, he and his brothers would play _Flash Gordon_ and Brian always wanted to be Vultan, so this movie was literally a childhood dream come true for him. In fact, apparently he ruined a few takes because he was unconsciously making "pew! pew!" sounds with the laser guns, and the director had to remind him that they'd be adding the sound effects later.

      @Madbandit77 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ThreadBomb The Fifth Element is a way better version of Flash Gordon than the 1980 film because it has a better lead actor whose voice isn't dubbed (Sam Jones's real voice has an country boy drawl) and a story that's grounded so the stakes are higher.

    • @PuffyCloud_aka_puffeclaude
      @PuffyCloud_aka_puffeclaude ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@Madbandit77 except, Fifth Element isn't Flash Gordon, it's Harry Canyon. Gritty Noir tropes with fantastical sci-fi elements (and a lot of fashion). Flash was always pure pubescent aspirational adventure, something this movie captures well. It really feels like an old comic strip, (and a lot of fashion) something I don't think people appreciated in a time when sci-fi movies were going for more realism.
      Barbarella is almost a companion piece to this one. I'd even think of seeing it first if one has the chance.

    Ok, Emily....No...The Nods went in the other direction. "Dune" came out in '84, and "Star Wars" was heavily inspired by "Flash Gordon" serials of the 1930's. In fact, George Lucas had wanted to make a Flash Gordon movie, but couldn't get the rights to the property, so he invented Star Wars, instead! The Kingdom of Arbor, for instance, gets a lot of comparisons to swamp planet Dagobah, but it was literally created decades before even the first "Star Wars" film....However there IS one great connection to "Star Wars" in "Flash Gordon"(1980). The actor who played Zarkov's assistant, Munsen(William Hootkins), played the first X-Wing pilot to die in the battle of Yavin-Jek Porkins.

    • @chrisleebowers

      "George Lucas had wanted to make a Flash Gordon movie" AND a Dune movie
      "...but couldn't get the rights to the property" DeLaurentis owned BOTH properties at the time. Ironically, they got both movies greenlit due to the success of Star Wars.
      "...so he invented Star Wars, instead!" which is very much a Flash Gordon/Dune mashup
      "Zarkov's assistant, Munsen(William Hootkins), played ...Jek Porkins." He was also one of the govt. wonks who hired Indiana Jones to find the Ark of The Covenant ("TOP Men"...) and the slimy Lt Eckhardt in Batman '89

His other rolls inclue King Lear, Boss Nass in Star Wars, Clayton in Tarzan, and honestly a near endless list of voice work for animation and video games, having rolls finished as recently as last year. This is one of my absolute favorite films. The kitsch, the enthusiasm, the glorious lack of self-consciousness. This movie revels in its anachronistic chest-thumping and happy sexuality. It's impossible to watch it without grinning and cheering for the heroes. "This is like Dune meets He-Man meets Star Wars." But Flash existed before all of them. The original comic dates back to the 1930's, and the film plays an homage to that time in the set and costume design. OMG THAT BEADWORK. Handsewn, every single one. The two Italian actresses are Ornella Muti (Aura) and Mariangela Melato (General Kala). They were very well known in the 70's. The King of the Hawkmen is the great Brian Blessed, a renowned Shakespearean actor. He always sounds like that. :)
