    I saw Gilels in Los Angeles when the USSR was starting to allow such USA visits. There were 2 KGB agents on the sides of the stage watching the audience. He played the Hungarian Rhap no 2 in his program & it was spectacular. I have seen most Intl pianists in my long lifetime & Gilels had the ability to make every single note seem "special". I dont believe any recordings can capture that kind of magic.

      When did you saw Gilels ?
      1960's?

      I agree, Gilels is the Soviet pianist I appreciate the most. When I was growing up, we didn't hear recordings by many Soviet musicians in my household, because (a) they weren't always widely available and (b) my parents wanted us to listen to, say, Serkin and Schnabel instead. Now, with the benefit of TH-cam, I can rediscover all the Soviet masters whom I didn't get to hear enough in my youth. David Oistrakh is another one.

    How he bring out some lines in left hand throughout the piece is one of my favorite things about his playing

    Pour moi et pour cette rapsodie, il y avait Czyffra au dessus de tous... Découvrant ici Gilels, je suis bouleversé et même fasciné par son talent, notamment à partir de 4:16 Un immense merci !

    Short but beautiful cadenza, written by Liszt himself for the four hands version, I think.

    Yeah, he tries that also with Liszt's Spanish Rhapsody. These Steinway grand pianos are d...ed tough.

    Is my lmagination or he had a terrible mistake at 8:40

    • @canman5060
      @canman5060 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Letty K No. This is not your imagination.He hits half a note lower.It was a live concert. He made a similar mistake too at the beginning of his concert in Moscow while playing Beethoven variation on the theme Turkish March from his incidental music The Ruin of Athens.But this does not spoil the intensity and power of his playing.

      God forbid people judged any of the other art forms by the terribly rigid standard some listeners judge classical performances. An actor forgetting a word would spell disaster for the entire play ... a slip of the brush would be the destruction of the Sistine Chapel Ceiling ... if the pianist's fundamental technique is solid, and they show a deep study of the music, why can't we listen for the interpretation?

    • @GoldinDr
      @GoldinDr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@iianneill6013 I agree completely. Yet it's also true that he missed a note. It was a live performance. It happens.

      Yes, but this is why no other pianist has captured my admiration in quite the same way as this man. I first saw Gilels in 1976 in concert and was totally captivated by the way he put everything into the music and the performance. No holds barred! It was like being on a runaway train with no brakes - terrifying but enthralling - and almost expecting a wrong note somewhere!! In this recording there was one, but it was a live performance which makes it fabulous. Thank you for this wonderful gift of music.

      It doesn't matter. His interpretation does.
