I had the most beautiful blooms on several spikes on my phal last year. I moved it to a focal point in my kitchen and it immediately started to blast. I couldn’t figure out the problem. Long story short, I had a bowl of lemons and oranges right beside (they looked so nice together) them. One of those fruits was going bad and I firmly believe it recked my entire phal display.

Really good explanation . Light and temperature. My two reasons why...
When I am doing night shift the windows stays covered for longer. And when I am doing day shift- I use to leave them open...Great video. Now I know the reason why.

My orchid got bud blast when I followed the packaging instructions and watered my little orchid with 1 ice cube a week. After the 2nd week all buds, and most of the flowers fell off. That's when I got on TH-cam and MissOrchidGirl taught me how to water my plant. Thank you!

I can testify to the fruit impact. I kept orchids next to my fruit bowl (apples, bananas, citrus) and they lost buds. I moved them and they got better. ;)

I recently got an Orchid as a gift and had it next to a banana basket on the kitchen counter. I started noticing that its new bud at the top started getting dried and falling off. That was the reason I look for some tips and came across your video. I changed the banana basket. Hope it resolves the problem and the remaining bud blooms.

So my lovely Phal had finished flowering and A New Branch with buds developed! All going well, then I purchased some lemons and they were on the table within 12" of the new bud. a few days later I took another look at the bud which had been developing beautifully, it had stopped growing and was drying out! No other changes had occurred but the lemons. Thank goodness I saw the comment below. Looks like more may be on the way. Lemons now removed so I hope that more will develop, Lesson learned.

    Hello,
I bought my orchid with beautiful blooms, and I placed it near a window. The plant was doing great, then suddenly the flowers started to fall. So, I became curious as to what might be happening, and that led me to your channel. After listening to your video, I realized that I had some tomatoes that were rotting sitting on the counter next to the plant. I believe that is the reason my orchid bloom withered.

Hello Danny! Happy new year, I have been watching you since 2014 and before 10 days I purched a mini phal with many closed buds but the most of them dried out and fall but this girl is producing more buds. Unfortunately I had it next to fruits and even new buds dried out. Thanks for you educational videos!

Hello! I got my first phalaenopsis orchid the day before valentine's and I've been watching so many of your videos to learn about it! I'm here on this one because I have a few buds blasting. I purchased it from a nursery in a greenhouse type environment. It's currently on the dining room table by the west facing window door to the deck because that spot gets the most light. (Second best is next to an east facing window but even sitting on the side of the couch at that window feels colder than the other side of the couch away from that window.) We open and close the door regularly to let the dog out and it's currently winter in Maryland so it's cold out. I did repot and fertilize it at partial strength about 5 days ago but at that point I did already have one bud blasting, now I have more. It had some weird spongey material at the center of the medium it came in, and a decent amount of squishy and ripped roots, so I do believe repotting it was best. It did have a handful of buds begin to open as well though but none have fully opened. Is my orchid doomed? What should I do?

I have a gas heater and a gas stove. Which could be the reason why my phalaenopsis orchid suffered from bud blasts. That, and there was a shift in temperature and humidity. Sometimes it's too hot and sometimes it's too cold. I also have some spiders hiding in the soil and I don't think that I give her enough indirect sunlight.

Not necessarily orchids but some plants in Western Australia, only flower after a bush/wild fire has gone through and ethylene gas has been released into the atmosphere... it was mentioned by Sir David Attenborough in Private Life of Plants as well.

Hi Danni, this is my first comment. I've been watching several of your videos for the past few weeks, when I bought my first Phalae! I am from Sydney so it is autumn here now, and cooling down after a warm summer. When I bought my little white Phalae with two stalks in a pot, it was healthy with 8 or 9 buds (4-5 per stalk) and in a glass pot. The roots and potting mix looked ok. It was end of summer and I put it in my lounge with some light (not direct) and mild temps. The florist showed me how to water it (very little water in a spray bottle twice a week).... Unfortunately 2 weeks ago, there was a cold snap in Sydney and I think it caused bud blast.
I noticed overnight that 4 of the buds turned yellow and they subsequently dropped. I got stressed about it and wondered if I should repot it, water less, water more etc but then I moved it to my room. Since then I have had one remaining bud bloom, another bud with bud blast, but so far it's ok. There are still 3 remaining unbloomed buds that look ok (I think!).
As it's coming to winter in Sydney, I might wait till Spring to buy more orchids. I bought the phalae as I thought it's be easier to take care of for a beginner. I live in an apartment and we don't have central heating so it will get colder. I'm still trying to figure out which room is the best for the orchid. My apartment faces north and all the windows are in the west so I get the afternoon sun (though it's not very hot as it's now autumn). I don't have the orchid under the sun but near the window sill where the sunlight is filtered by the blinds. Right now it sits in my bedroom - I can't open the curtains in my lounge when I'm not home as it's on ground level and could make it easier for people to climb over the balcony and enter the apartment. The room window sits quite high so I sit the orchid near the window with the curtains drawn but another blind to filter the sunlight.
By the way I do find your videos very helpful. I'm keen to repot the phale later when it's finished blooming. I would like to eventually buy more orchids and other types. In the meantime, I enjoy listening to your lovely voice and explanation about orchids and viewing your gorgeous collection! Thanks :)

Hi danny I moved last july, and plants responded super well to the new home (much more light in summer, but less humidity). This winter on the contrary it was a disaster, very short days but humidity remained unchainged. All my plants aborted buds, even cattleyas, I recently got a ultrasound humidifier but no led light for the moment. It was so frustrating, expecially for one phal (my very first one, which skipped blooming last year). Do you think it il light?

+MissOrchidGirl. Hi Danny thank you so much for this video!! I purchased two mini Phalaenopsis Orchids a few weeks ago making sure they had more buds then flowers and because of temperature fluctuations and stress, unfortunately they ended up with bud blast/bud fall. Also the orchid mix dried out too fast because I guess I made too many holes on the sides of the pots. I ended up placing both pots with the holes into two glass jars in hopes of the mix drying out less but getting enough air so as not to rot the roots, and on top of a humidity tray. Now just monitoring the flowers stalks and leaves, hope it works.😳

Hi all! I have a question I am still having trouble finding answers to: I purchased my wife 2 orchids about 4 weeks ago. They both got transplanted a week into having them (new pots, new Orchid soil, trimming and pruning the dead and nappy roots + fertilizer, etc). 3 weeks later and I have noticed the flowers on one of them closest to the crown are starting to die one-by-one. I have read this is normal but IS IT? Are the buds dying because they are experiencing bud blast or are they dying because it's part of their life cycle and it's beginning to enter dormancy? This is my very first orchid so I am having a little trouble understanding what's going on. Only one of them is experiencing this and I'm not sure how long the buds were in bloom before purchasing them (also making it difficult to know if it's the end of it's life cycle or bud blast). How long after a change in environment will it take for an orchid to show they aren't happy with this? For four weeks they have been in the same environment and nothing has changed. I figured like most plants it's pretty immediate but 3+ weeks seems a little long. The only difference is they were transplanted out of their previously poor-soil container a little less than week into having them home (I bought 2 of them that were smashed into the same tiny, tiny pot). All of the flowers were in bloom at the time of transplant (unlikely I know but it was a MUST) and they were big, beautiful and very healthy flowers. Any information or thoughts are welcome. Thank you!

I have an oil burner, and I experienced bud drop in my phals when I vaporized lavender oil near them. I think it has some components that act similarly to ethylene. I only lost maybe 3 buds until I figured out what it was, so it wasn't very severe.

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi, underwatering can cause dehydration, thus stress, so yes it can definitely lead to bud loss. Overwatering is too vague and we don't know what it could mean, so let's say this: if roots are suffocated and rot, the orchid won't be able to absorb water anymore, which causes dehydration, thus stress, and that can totally lead to bud loss ☺️
