Use this simple yet very effective warm-up exercise to expand the vocabulary of your students.
Pick a word and create a word web that maps out the new word. Here is what you can put in each cloud around the target word: 1) meaning, 2) part of speech, 3) pronunciation, 4) translation, 5) sentence, 6) collocations, 7) category, 8) synonyms, and 9) antonyms.
Word webs help your students organize information and learn and remember new vocabulary words. Use them as a warm-up activity in your class and you will see that your students will have a much better understanding of what the new word means.

Thank you, teacher, also, I appreciate a lot that there's no distracting music 🎵
You are welcome! What music do you have in mind?
Agree 👍🏻
@@Teacher-Val most contents in TH-cam are illustrated with music
Some people would be distracted because it's too loud and it's distracting

It was really helpful. Thank you!
You're welcome!
It's very useful lecture. Thank u sir
Based on my experience, word webbing is a very effective technique for vocabulary building. I also include word associations which I ask the students what makes them happy and they connect it in their daily lives. I also use word webbing in other subjects. Thanks for sharing!
That's a good idea, Miss M! Word associations work well too!
@@Teacher-Val This activity engages the students to participate and it may take my whole period to have this activity. Especially if students want to copy everything in their notebooks. lol

Thank you, Maria! Noted on the syllable stress! :)
Thank you for sharing this video i liked it but i think that it takes a lot of time as a warm up activity
Thank you! You can always adapt it to your class. Word webs don't need to be time consuming, and yes, you can definitely use them in class. You can do one as a warm-up activity at the beginning of the class or use a variation of it when explaining new words. Here is an example: th-cam.com/video/si3ylZo4UFw/w-d-xo.html. Start watching at 5:40.

Thanks for the video! Haven’t tried this up yet, so there comes a follow up question: what to do if you already have a collocation/combined forms in your source vocabulary? (e. g. have a shower, get dressed etc)
There's no need to use everything what's on my list. Just use what is relevant for your class.

Hey Teacher Val. I really enjoy this video u made. It’s very instructive n helpful. Currently I’m an English teacher working in a public high school in China. As u might know, reading comprehension is a big essential part in high school English teaching. And it’s also a predominant part in the college entrance exams in China. So I’m wondering in what way is better to teach high school students on reading comprehension. I’d very much appreciate it if u could give me some instructions
Thank you very much! What city are you from? I can't answer your question in a few sentences because I need to see the books you are using to give a meaningful response. Your students need to develop the reading skills that will enable them to not only comprehend texts in English or pass the exams, but also obtain what they need to deliver a written/oral response. The following reading strategies usually help: previewing, contextualizing, visualizing, Q&A sessions, summarizing, skimming, scanning, paraphrasing, etc.
Good day, Val! Thank u 4 the game. While watching this video it came to my mind to use it with grammar material. My students are studying gerund and infinitive now. I consider it'll be good to write 2 cloudes "Gerund", "Infinitive" and add words and phrases used with them!?
Great idea! Word webs are not carved in stone. You can improvise and use them for anything you want as long as it benefits your students.
Спасибо. Было бы интересно посмотреть, чему вы учите других учителей😀. Наверно там много полезного
Spasibo! I hope one day it will be possible.
@@Teacher-Val Wow, where are from originally, teacher Val?

It is wonderful thanks so much would you explain how to teach writing for kids
Thank you! Teaching writing is definitely on my list.
This also (after some modification) doubles as a great way to introduce new kanji to students learning Japanese!
That's awesome! So glad it helps you with your classes!
Hello, teacher Val! Thank you very much for your videos! They are really helpful to me as I'm not an experienced teacher. Could you, please, answer my questions? I ca't understand. Makeing a word web seems to be very time consuming. So, you have to spend quite much time to make even 1 word web with 1 word. So, can it be used for learning many new words? And is it possible to use the technique on a lesson?
Good question. Word webs are not time consuming, and yes, you can definitely use them in class. You can do one as a warm-up activity at the beginning of the class or use a variation of it when explaining new words. Here is an example: th-cam.com/video/si3ylZo4UFw/w-d-xo.html. Thanks a lot for this useful & interesting video. I'd like to ask you Mr Val to make a video showing us the different learning strategies that any teacher should be aware of to be ready for any job interview. In fact I work with my own ideas ; I prepare for the lesson and think about suitable techniques to get the ideas across but I never know the academic names of learning strategies. Can you help me , Mr Val, please?
Great suggestion! I will have a live stream dedicated to the job interview questions soon. :))

Where are you from? What language is this? It sounds like Croatian or Romanian. I understand "lectie" and "profesore" (lesson and teacher) but I am not sure about "strasnica". :))
Thank you very much, Marius!
Hello, Teacher val can you make a sample activity for the alphabet topic?
In my store there is a PowerPoint presentation with sounds on phonics alphabet. It features 26 letters with a picture and pre-recorded sound for each letter. It is designed to help children learn the sounds of the letters in the English alphabet. The last slide in this presentation contains a link to the phonics song featuring the same words as in this ppt.

Haha. Good one, Mr Peacenik! I was thinking of the anagrams of Nik, and all I could come up with was 'kin' and 'ink' which makes you the kin of ink. It has a noble and literary sound to it. You are a master of words!! :)

WARM UP ??? Sorry, but this is a Class Killer
Haha. How is this a class killer? :))
@@Teacher-Val Hi Val, you are the expert, ive been teaching kids only 3 months; BUT my opinion: (1) draw Big smiley face on board, (2) draw a vertical line, (3) ALONG LINE, write HAPPY half way; Above: very happy, and top: bliss. Below: sad, bottom: cry. (4) depend class small or big, design activity: teacher show MANY pictures (b-day cake, Disneyland, rainy cloud, baby elephant fall in a hole) and students rank them on the ”happy-ometer”
@@kevtherev8194 Sounds like a great warm-up for the little ones. Word webs, however, are aimed at the higher level students.
