The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

My father was a member of the American Legion Zouaves back in the early 50's and was part of the group that went to Hollywood to perform in the Danny Kaye film The Court Jester. The Zouaves performed several times on the Ed Sullivan Show and although I cannot spot my Dad in this video he did perform there on at least one occasion. As one person notes below, the Zouaves did drill at 300 steps per minute. My Dad was small in stature said that he was a member of the "Pee-Wee" squad.
This group took the wall and rest of the set with them and set it up and took it down after each performance - I saw them numerous times both in Jackson and
other county fairs around michigan when I was a youngster - To see them perform was really something - When I was in the military as a member of a drill team I really realized the level of dedication it takes to drill at their level - It's a real shame they aren't active anymore but fantastic that someone took the time to post this performance on youtube !!!!

I believe it was this same group that provided the extras for the knighting ceremony in the old Danny Kaye film The Court Jester.
Read recently that they take 300 steps/minute! That makes it 5 steps/second!!! WOW!!!

Zouaves? Did the French Legions invade Michigan? A little known part of American history!
Zuave troops actually have a really large influence in America since the 1850s when militias started to copy there forms of drill Zouave fever stepped through as these militias became traveling drill teams like this only spreading it further and further many actually fought in the civil war on both sides as elite troops but unfortunately they where almost entirely phased out of actual service in the milita acts in the 1880s or so but the legacy lives on (just barely) and God bless it
