I was a gymnasti in 1970s. One of my coaches was an old man at the time, and just did the yelling part . He was Doris Fuchs-Brause's first coach. He was so proud that he had coached her.

I did gymnastics in the 70's as well - Nadia was my IDOL! I just did a comparison of her floor routine in the '76 Olympics vs. Gabi Douglas', b/c I remember being stunned by the power and how much height she obtained on her jumps. I love how much the sport has evolved and how muscular the girls are now - we were always muscular, but there was also pressure to be super thin, which is a pretty difficult balance (to coin a phrase:)

Thank you for this amazing look back. USA gymnastics has come a long way. No mat? Ouch!

Laura Anderson When I competed as a gymnast in the 1970’s, many times we had to do it on a hardwood floor. When there were mats, they were very thin. Now they are spring loaded and very soft and bouncy. The springboards for the vault had very little spring and you were required to have the board quite far from the horse. The pre-flight counted as much as the vault after you hit the horse. Vaulting was more dangerous then, so they changed it completely. Too many injuries due to missing the horse or jamming into it.

At 5:12 one of the tumblers performed a double twist? That was great for those days, wasn't it?

Not sure, but it seems that's where the tumbling was back then. The floor was for everything else. Now the tumbling is part of floor X. In the 30s, they also had something like synchronized swimming on land. They then later separated that into rhythmic gymnastics and mandated these same props for every competition; a ball, a hoop, a ribbon and clubs.

Thank you for adding this Choc Dave but it won't load. I was having trouble loading some of the Swan Lake segments yesterday but others would load okay???
