This was, hands down, the BEST pedal comparison I've ever seen. No long winded "opinuons", he just played them all, same rift, and left it to the viewer to form their own opinion. Loved it!!!!
Check out Keith Merrow's pickup comparison videos. His (and at least the first three minutes of this video) are the standard at which all gear comparison videos should be held. I'm tired of people not playing a looped passage across the gear they're trying to compare. "Here's a chord progression on this pedal, but a little melody on this other one with completely different settings." It appears that the scientific method wasn't taught in most schools...
YES. To all you content creators out there - STOP WITH THE LONG WINDED INTROS! We don't need a history lesson on Boss! We don't need a "HEY WHATS UP GUYS IT'S YOUR BOY ____ AND TODAY I'M GOING TO COMPARE BOSS PEDALS! BOSS IS A COMPANY THAT WAS FOUNDED IN BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH"
I wish every comparison video used this method. Just play them all set at noon, back to back, same riff. This is perfect. This is exactly what we need!
new to pedals and I'm glad I came across this video I was about to buy the metal core immediately after watching this I canceled my order on Amazon and went with the turbo cuz they don't see myself creating heavy metal and I like the turbo as it sounds a bit more like old school mighty Morphin power rangers
Great video. No boring talk before, during, or in between pedals. Immediate side by side comparison with the same riffs makes it very easy to hear the differences.
Been trying to recommend that to everybody possible for those who want a modern high gain metal tone out of a pedal. Sounds best with the distortion turned all the way down, too. Still very high gain, but with enough cleanliness to provide articulation.
The problem with the Metal Core is how little tonal flexibility it has. It has no mid control at all, whereas the Metal Zone has a mid level and mid sweep (something every Metal distortion pedal should have).
this is what a pedal shootout must be......pure metal....to the point.....and focus was on the pedals and not on oneself as many of these asses do......more talk less demo....you sir have my respect
My favorite Boss Distortion pedal is the ST-2 Power Stack. But of the all the pedals featured above, I find that the classic sound of the old, reliable DS-1 still does it for me.
what do you play with the power stack ? i’m trying to decide if I want to buy a DS-2 or a ST-2 and I dont know what would be best conbined with my marshall amp and my strato with a double pickup
@laratrpkoski I use it to play songs by Zeppelin, Rush, and other bands of that ilk. I don't have any experience with the DS-2, so I can't really give you an informed opinion about it. But if you're looking for Marshall tones in a pedal, the ST-2 Power Stack does the job very nicely IMHO.
I just got the DS-1 and fell instantly in love with it. I’ve had the Ibanez Tube Screamer and the DOD FX-55, but this distortion gives me the sound I was always looking for. In my opinion, the other distortion pedals in this video are just EQ-ed DS-1’s.
Is a very good comparison video. I actually had my doubts on the DS1 and DS2 pedals. But they were actually the best sounding ones. Even though you can shape the mids on the metazone you can always get a cheap EQ pedal and shape the DS1 and DS2
Thanks for doing this. I was just comparing distortion pedals too, including 3 of those. I choose the Metal Core ML-2. I like that tone best. However, I want to check out the new Metal Zone, the WazaCraft MT-2W, that looks the same but you can switch between an updated standard mode or a custom mode.
Awesome demo!! Been using the metal zone since it came out. People always put it down but so versatile you can play any kind of rock and metal if you use it right. Again awesome vid!!!
I have boss ds-2, but I like the most metalcore ml-2 sound, it's best metal sound here. Btw, you can modify all of these pedals and get different sound pretty easily, (if you have any basic knowledge about electronics), all you have to do is to open them and change diodes, I mean cut off 2 main diodes and put other ones on their places, try different combos of them and find the sound you prefer, you don't need to solder and cut every time ofc, you just solder 4 wires on place where diodes were in the first place, and just tie different ones to wires, and when you find the best tone, just solder them..in ds-1 and ds-2 that diodes are labeled d4 and d5, but I'm sure that you can easily find them in any of these pedals, bcoz they always stand one beside other parallel but turned in different directions.. Some people even make holes and put many switches on pedal outside, bcoz they solder many different combos of diodes in, so they can change tone any time they want, so you can actually have all these sounds in one pedal that way, and even more than that..you can even just cut that diodes and leave pedal totally without them, in that case you get pretty awesome overdrive pedal with a ton of boost options..
After thinking I wanted the "Metal Zone " for all these years, ready to order it online... then I saw the "Metal Core" pedal for the first time ...Hhhhhm I'm buying that now! Thanks, Homes!
I have had Metal Zone and I have Metal Core because I play metal and some solos lead but I have never wanted or had the money to spend thousands of usd to pay a head like 5150, mesa or EVH, plus cabinet, plus booster and noise pedals then I can tell you if you play metal on a 7 string guitar drop A, and you dont have the money for the extreme tube head and so on, go for boss metal core, a delay and reverb and you are set, I have that setting plus seymour duncan blackout on my ibanez 7 string and it sounds powerful and decent clear. Metal core defines well drop A, metal zone not so much. If you need midds with Metal Core you can get it at your eq of your amp, and that's it.
GREAT VIDEO THANK U! Man, I used all those pedal in years behind, they are all great. ..And now I have Mt2 and Ds1 on my pedalboard... DS1 can sound extremely good if it's modded, I use it almost 90% for creating my sound... But also, I can say that ds2 is good in its original state... My opinion (based on 9 years experience with boss pedals)
Boss is one of the best distortion pedals you can get.its difficult to choose between the metal core and the metal zone.for me I think they both on the same par.the metal zone however has more features with gain control which can sound pretty heavy if u have the right amp and guitar for it!
I like the MT-2 and the DS-1 the best, but none of these were bad. All good choices just depending on what you're playing. DS-2 is a close second though.
Best comparison I've seen so far. You also made the MD-2 sound good hahaha. I don' t like the ML-2 sound, it's not bad, just doesn't suit to me. For the MT-2 there's no salvation
I was gonna pick the Metal Core, but with some tweaking the Metal Zone can sound just like it. In fact, seems like the Metal Zone can sound like all of them if it wants to. Definitely makes the $89 bucks I spent on it so many years ago one of the better choices I've made in my life. 😎
DS 1 BY FAR THE BEST,,,,thats the one i have after my favourite guitarist, Steve Rothery by Marillion used it in the first Marillion albums and the sound on them kick ass
I love the mt2. I play it through the front of a 120w fender power chorus amp through the clean channel (a very clean and powerful amp.) I bought the pedal in 2000' and know how to dial in a killer sound. You can get a blues, rock, hard rock and metal sound all from the controls. This pedal is very touchy so learn how to adjust it correctly and it will give you any sound you want. Be patient...its one of the best pedals out there! Just learn how to tweak it! Dont listen to all the people hating on this pedal. Enjoy!
I had it for 5 years, I'm not a hater, but everything just sounds like Pantera, the distortion don't have any definition at all for hard rock or blues, even with a little distortion the sound becomes tangled and thin. It may sound good in a small amp playing at home, but in a big amp it's a joke how thin the sound is.
DS-1 kinda middle of the road, but in a good way. Metal Core unsurprisingly the most modern sounding. I'm with Ola on the Turbo: surprisingly modern sounding for a pedal from the 80s - nice balance of cut and naturalness. Mega has more bottom end weight than you usually get from a pedal, but it didn't cut through the mix very well. Metal Zone sounds great, but only if you use it right - easy to make it sound like shit. Kinda leaning toward the Turbo, myself.
Anyone looking for a heavier modern metal tone (death core, death metal, djent etc) on a lower to low mid amp should go ML-2. MT-2 is good in the right amps when used as a pre amp but not every beginner can do that. Downside of the ML-2 is lack of mid control. Only really about three or four good tones doable but they are solid. DS-1 for alt rock or thrash all the way no contest. Doesn’t muddy up tone too much like a lot of lighter distortion can but still can chug. You will also have no trouble finding one and it’s very affordable. If you have over $150 though there are MUCH better options for distortion. The Rat is a classic, Seymour Duncan Palladium is an under rated gem, and Walrus audio Iron Horse is amazing to name a few. Higher price pedals for the most part of course and harder to come across compared to Boss. Overall distortion pedals shine in different genres for the most part and owning multiple is nice, but a nice high gain amp will give you most of your tone. Not many pedals below $300 can get you the same tone as a high gain amp and certainly no Boss pedal is doing that. Primary distortion should come from amps and pedals can help clean up the tone a little or provide a lead boost.
Ds-1 ds-2 and md-2 for me. A lot of people are saying the metal core is there favourite ,but I think they are forgetting to imagine in a mix where the metal core is literally no mids and you can't hear it.
This was, hands down, the BEST pedal comparison I've ever seen. No long winded "opinuons", he just played them all, same rift, and left it to the viewer to form their own opinion. Loved it!!!!

I agree wholeheartedly, awesome review.
EXACTLY!!! a Flawless review!
That DS1 is holding it's own. For $50 what's not to love? The Metal Core also gets my vote. Those two where my favorites.
Agreed.
I've got those both. I love them !
Now its 80 euros!!!
I wish every comparison video used this method. Just play them all set at noon, back to back, same riff. This is perfect. This is exactly what we need!
The Boss Turbo Distortion sounds the best to me..
I agree, not as grainy and scooped as the others
new to pedals and I'm glad I came across this video I was about to buy the metal core immediately after watching this I canceled my order on Amazon and went with the turbo cuz they don't see myself creating heavy metal and I like the turbo as it sounds a bit more like old school mighty Morphin power rangers
bcs it's very sharp
Same :)
metal core sounds like and justice for all
Great video. No boring talk before, during, or in between pedals. Immediate side by side comparison with the same riffs makes it very easy to hear the differences.
I’m shocked how good that metalcore sounds
Metalcore FTW

@@superheavydeathmetal but mt2 can play only metal, metal core can do almost any genre plus it has a fat solo tone which mt2 doesnt have
Thrash metal weapon!!!
loved it... no talking, no explanation... just played the pedals!! This is what we want - this is what we need!!
this is what a pedal shootout must be......pure metal....to the point.....and focus was on the pedals and not on oneself as many of these asses do......more talk less demo....you sir have my respect

Metal core for me 👍
Love the sound of the metal core
This is the most FLAWLESS comparison review I have ever seen, I'm coming to this channel for ALL my guitar related reviews from now on!
Metal: metal core
Hard Rock: ds1
Agreed
Rock: DS-1
TURBO Rock: DS-2
Mega Rock: DS-3...ugh sorry I can't go on
I agree.

ds-2 is best
yez!
Tbh mega distortion sounded like a better version of it
To say one sound is better than another is like arguing about favourite colours.
It sounds a bit too midrangey. I get sick of midrangey pedals but it does have a really cool characteristic
That turbo distortion sounds ferocious honestly.
The metal core and the first one has a lot of kick to them

This is a good comparison. Many extreme sounds readily available.

That's metal core pedal sounds like it would actually be good for Black Metal.
Definitely!
I use it for that!
Me too
I've heard Dissection used it on the The Somberlain & Storm of the Light's Bane
Why call it the metalcore when it should be called the Boss
No useless talking, Easy, Simple, Perfect video ! thank you
In this test comparison I prefer Turbo Distortion. But all sounds very similar.

Good. Metal zone is the worst distortion pedal ever made
In the first example, the TURBO DIST is a head and shoulder winner as far as clarity, punch, and tone, wow!!
I have had Metal Zone and I have Metal Core because I play metal and some solos lead but I have never wanted or had the money to spend thousands of usd to pay a head like 5150, mesa or EVH, plus cabinet, plus booster and noise pedals then I can tell you if you play metal on a 7 string guitar drop A, and you dont have the money for the extreme tube head and so on, go for boss metal core, a delay and reverb and you are set, I have that setting plus seymour duncan blackout on my ibanez 7 string and it sounds powerful and decent clear. biyang metal-end pedal is good too...
Plug it right into the effects loop return. It sounds much better.

I like the more full deep sound of the ds-1 and md-2
totalmente de acuerdo
DS-2 my fave of this bunch - in Turbo mode with the extra mids it gives.
Most needed video of youtube metal community thank you.I think the best ones are metal zone and Ds1
I had all of these, except the Metal Core. The only one I still have is the Turbo Distortion.
Попробуйте выход МТ-2 подключить в Return усилителя и вы услышите его истинное звучание
Great. Now I want an Metal Core pedal.
Yep- That's how it should be done. Excellent review.

DS-2 and MT-2. My fav's from this list.
MD-2 in my opinion. you can easily tighten that up and give it a higher top end with an SD-1 and the gain rolled off.
MD-2 is what it says, it's a Mega DS1
Well it's depin on the sound that you want your band to have.
La mejor comparación de pedales! regards from Chile
Metal Core is my love
Boss md2 is good for métal and stoner. Huge bass. Good choice
I use the Metal Core for distortion, and a Waza Craft Blues driver for OD. All the drive pedals I'll ever need.
Just bought a metal core . Best pedal I ever had
DS-1 fuckin' crushed this.
Agree, I just bought a DS-2 yesterday and now wished I'd got the DS-1.
@@aynakotalaga DS-2 is great too, has a bit softer sound, not exactly suited for metal because it's a little looser than a DS-1, but still awesome.
