I'm loving the videos, I could tell this was a long one in the making. My favorite thing about your channel is how you explain what the proper way versus what it takes to just make it work. Not everybody has the budget or skill to do a complete 100% rebuilds.

    Nice project young man,
There is nothing wrong with reusing parts during a rebuild as long as they are still good and with in specs. Many people don't realize it, but when one engines were built in the factory, there are tolerance limits and everything was not always made 100% to an exact size, as long as it was in the tolerance limits it was perfectly fine and got built.
I am a of a old timer compared to to you guys so I have probably seen different things over the years than how stuff is done today.
Like those Rear Main Crankshaft Seals. Those ones that have the "Ears" on them are the same as pretty much any AMC ENGINE from about the mid 1960s and newer.
And regardless of what a lot of people may or may not agree with, I have found personally that those seals are less prone to leaking if they are installed without any sealant, especially Silicone RTV , because it can mess with the bearing clearance.
On occasion if I thought I needed sealant on one I would use aviation form a gasket liquid, and apply a very light coat of it .

my dad used to hill climb race in 80's with a cj5 named SIX PACK. him and a friend took a 4 barrel intake, cut it into 7 pieces then welded back up to fit his inline 6cyl race motor. it was around 300hp. he was 2nd place in the east coast. that jeep was wicked fast out running big blocks but one big block jeep he could never beat. he also ran 112 octane for the jeep.

I can’t argue with you on the lack of quality on replacement lifters. My 95 K2500 5.7 ran 300K quiet as a mouse so when one head cracked I decided to spare no expense and purchased the “best “ parts that money could buy for a complete rebuild. What I have learned is that most liters regardless of brand are coming out of the same Wuhan factories. If I were to do it again I’d put the original lifters back in my engine even though they had 300K miles on them. They were in excellent condition.

Hey dex I had issues with cams as well. I ended up buying a reground through Delta cam 50 bucks. They also regrind lifters or sell you new ones. With their grind on them, you won't have any issues with your cam going flat.

  • @thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259

I agree 100% with reusing lifters if they aren't damaged. There's a much better chance aftermarket lifters quickly fail.
I prefer a stone hone because it will reveal low spots.
My Buick factory service manual suggests using an undersize bearing shell to adjust clearance.

Video like this just makes me want to keep my ole' Jeep. My XJ is #151 that rolled off the assembly line in Nov 1984. Got a 2.5L mated to a T4 (not AX4) from the factory. NP207J, AMC 35 rear axle, Dana 30 front axle. When they first started building these things, they just threw whatever parts they had around into em.

I appreciate the hell outta these videos. My jeep I’ve been playing with busted the #2 piston. Tried for a in-frame, quick rebuild and found someone has already done so before me, not so well either. now I know I’m at the point of doing exactly this. Definitely gonna be paying my machinist well 🤣

That spring in the oil pump is the High Pressure reg spring. If you want more pressure add a shim washer at the bottom of the spring.
Use Rotela oil for cam break in oil it has a good amount of zinc for lifter break in.
Most Shell Rotella engine oils, including T6 5W-40 Full Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Oil, contain approximately 1200 ppm of zinc which will benefit older and high-performance engines.

Great video - sorry for the late comment/question.....new subscriber. I always like to see as much detail as possible but that's just me. Maybe you could do a "one time" video showing some step-by-step and let everyone know it has more detailed information on it. That way the experienced crowd knows what to expect. It looked like you removed the head with the intake still bolted on. As a newbie to Jeeps, I didn't realize that was a possibility. I'm now looking around for or a video with some more information on that. I need to check out possible lifter noises on my 4.0. Many thanks for taking the time to show your work! It really helps us "part timers". 🙂

i use the telescoping magnet tool that's $3.99 at harbor freight to pull out lifters. same diameter, can push or use magnet to pull. lifetime warranty on the tool as well.
...and yeah, fuck crank bearings. paid the shop that cleaned/honed my long block to do that.

reface the lifters. easy; White grease, you gotta be kidding, never use any grease that is not soluble in engine oil, cant tell what you used but Bob Glidden blew up many Fords using the wrong grease to assemble motors, then he learned, looks like way too much deck clearance but budget pistons would keep that top ring away from the ridge which if touching would be disastrous. That jeep head and piston likes tight deck clearance like .030 put sealer on front head bolt it goes to water
