I got a Wii u when they very first came out and I remember being able to go all over the house with the pad staying connected. I had the Wii u in the living room and would play the gamepad in my bedroom laying down just fine. I got one recently and I've noticed this. I thought maybe it was cause the gamepad I had come from a different system. The original pad was scratched up so they gave me one in better condition. Anyway I need to do this now and also I'm glad I found out about upgrading the batteries to larger ones too.
Great video about a tip for buying a wireless chip for the wii u gamepad,cuz the wi-fi of that controller most times disconnects a lot while moving far away from the console. ( The only thing I know is that the wii u console itself,has longer distance of its wi-fi to reach routers farther )

I have my wii u like 10cm from the console and it stutters and glitches allot. It's basically unplayable. The it says connection issues, connection lost, stuff like that. Is it the Bluetooth thing a have to replace or is the wii u gamepad just broken?
Thanks for this. Aside from the difficulty in getting a new chip these days, the repair itself was super easy with the right tools and knowhow (ie watching this video 5 times while I was waiting for the chip to arrive). Signal strength and reliability is back to normal. It is unfortunate that Nintendo's answer to a known problem was to make the chip easy to replace, rather than fix the issue. If that was their answer, I wish that Nintendo had shipped a replacement chip with every system. Rant over, thank you for showing this clumsy, fumble fingered old guy that he can fix simple electronic issues.

Hello, I have such a problem - I turn on the Gamepad, it glows blue for a while, and then fades out. It charges fine, it just doesn't show anything on the screen. There is no connection to the console, it just writes "The console will now check for an update for the Wii U GamePad, Turn on the GamePad and press OK." Hi, I have a question about the Wii U gamepad. I saw the replacement range transmitter and it looks like it works but before I got it I wanted to see if it would last a long time before the replacement would start to malfunction as well. I also want to know whether a wired connection to the console will work - This would double as fixing the unsatisfactory battery life and drain the controller has. If you can answer these questions that would help a lot. Thanks !
Hi @JacB28, I've been using the replacement chip for about 7 months now and it's still working great. Unfortunately beyond that I can't tell you how long it will last. I don't know if you can hard wire the connection. If you do hardwire it, then you lose the mobility of the wireless gamepad. Good luck!
Thank you very much for this video! I removed the mini board, cleaned the contacts of the antenna sockets and the connector to the mainboard with alcohol, and placed it back. This already made a noticeable difference, so less frustration during my search for a good deal on a replacement.

I think my Wifi Chip failed as well. Can't confirm until I take it apart. My question is, why does this fail? I wasn't abusive to my Game Pad. In fact I didn't even play on my Wii U that much due to low amount of games. So how could one prevent the chip from failing? Or is this just the common part to replace for this console?

I just bought a used Wii U and the gamepad was working fine but I wanted to factory reset it and after doing that the Gamepad won’t connect to the system now. It has that syncing sequence with the playing card pictures but when I put the code that’s on the tv, it still wont sync. Do I buy a new chip?

Same here in the UK bud. I think people probably found out about this earlier and hoarded the modules for future use. It sucks because the added range would really increase the functionality of the game pad.

Hi Gerald, if it helps @5:55 I show the original chip used is a MICA2 and that's what I ordered and replaced it with. If the chip I link to in the description on Amazon or eBay is out of stock or unavailable just do a search for them and there may be other companies also selling them. Good luck!
Your video was great! I received my modules from eBay and the #s don't seem to match up. Rather than being Model MIC-A2 with an IC 2878D, they were labeled Model DWM-W081 with an IC 4250A. Elsewhere on eBay these model numbers show up for Wii U, but will it still work the same?
I went to do this - already have another chip - but I discovered there are no wires attached! The white and black wires shown are not in my gamepad at all. I’m amazed I can connect in the first place. Any idea how I can replace the wires that attach to the chip? Or work around it? Like, what do I even call the wires to do an internet search?
Hey Stolcor, thats interesting. The white wire is most likely the positive connection wire and black would be the negative. I'm surprised there's no wires, how is the wifi Bluetooth chip connected to the circuit board then?
Thanks but why is this? what can go possibly wrong with simply bt+wifi module during time? My point is it does not make any sense for this chip to decrease in quality over time. So did you get in to some investigation and found out why? Cos if not, cleaning old chip should do the same thing.. or reseating antenas coax connectors. I mean it does not make any sense for bt+wifi card to degrade during period of time. Also this is not a fix but replacement. You did not fix anything you just completelly replaced part that cost btw around 100 dolars. For this price Nintendo will do it for you.
Didnt work for me. Same message ordered the chip super easy to make the switch but same message, same proximity challenge. Is there an easy swap for the actual wii u Unit itself, as it seems something is messed up in the communication. From Main unit to Console.

Since we removed the battery and were able to re-pair the console with the Wii u main unit i would think you could buy any Wii u console (possibly pick up a used one online or from somewhere) and pair it to your main unit or pair another unit to your Wii u console. Hi it is possible you got a bad wi-fi module, most of the chips are pulled from other Wii U's so there is a good chance it may be a a used module...most of the modules on Ebay are ..check the listing. Are you sure the antenna connections snapped in tightly, I would remove the black and white cables and make sure you did not bend the center pin, those cables go to the antennas in the game pad, long as you have it apart, check the small black connector on both the module and the gamepad circuit board for any dirty or bent pins and when putting back it is seated well. You did try and re-sync after the module replacement?
Hi Maria, unfortunately I'm not sure why your wiiu remotes won't pair. When I replaced the chip in my wiiu it never affected any of our wiiu remotes, they stayed paired to the wiiu and we were able to play as normal.
The Wireless Chip is so expensive nowadays, your probably better off getting a used or brand new gamepad online off ebay somewhere. Not even worth your time to purchase a single chip to make your gamepad work again for almost 2x the price of the Wireless Chip. At least in Australia.

That's a problem with the wifi antenna. If you have an usb hard drive, disconnect it and try again. If the problem persists, disconnect the console for a night and try again.
Happens a little different for me it doesn't matter the distance (if its 6ft or top of the console). I can play Splatoon for about 5 or 10 MINUTES, And then bam! Lost connection... "The connection with the Wii U console has been lost. Please check that the Wii U GamePad and Wii U console are not too far apart and that there is no interference between them." I tried putting the gamepad on top of the console and still lost connection. I removed all interference still lost connection. I tried reboot the wiiu still lost connection. I pressed the power button to discharge energy and still lost connection. I tried removing the battery and placing again and sill lost connection. BUT NOTHING WORKED. TLDR: Playing at 6ft or with the Wii U on top of the console the same thing happens: after about 5 min of gameplay it still loses connection...

Why do these chips fail? When I opened my Wii U, the white cable had some "burnt" residue on the connector, for what it's worth.

After changing the module it works fine the distance but the Wii U remotes won’t pair
Hi Maria, unfortunately I'm not sure why your wiiu remotes won't pair. When I replaced the chip in my wiiu it never affected any of our wiiu remotes, they stayed paired to the wiiu and we were able to play as normal.

The Wireless Chip is so expensive nowadays, your probably better off getting a used or brand new gamepad online off ebay somewhere. Not even worth your time to purchase a single chip to make your gamepad work again for almost 2x the price of the Wireless Chip. At least in Australia.

I am not facing this problem.The only problem is that I can't connect to my connection?Even if I stand one inch distance from my WiFi it won't connect.It will just say unable to connect.if you know how to fix this please reply.
That's a problem with the wifi antenna. If you have an usb hard drive, disconnect it and try again. If the problem persists, disconnect the console for a night and try again.
5 years later that chip is over $100 now 😢

But is the replacement limited
Happens a little different for me it doesn't matter the distance (if its 6ft or top of the console). I can play Splatoon for about 5 or 10 MINUTES, And then bam! Lost connection...
"The connection with the Wii U console has been lost. Please check that the Wii U GamePad and Wii U console are not too far apart and that there is no interference between them."
I tried putting the gamepad on top of the console and still lost connection.
I removed all interference still lost connection.
I tried reboot the wiiu still lost connection.
I pressed the power button to discharge energy and still lost connection.
I tried removing the battery and placing again and sill lost connection.
BUT NOTHING WORKED.
TLDR: Playing at 6ft or with the Wii U on top of the console the same thing happens: after about 5 min of gameplay it still loses connection...
