Damn right! Just because I heard them on the radio first, or you saw them live before they were popular doesn’t make either one of us cooler. Let’s be happy we’ve found an awesome musician, and a funny show. Down with gatekeeping.
When the bass-line kicked in and she said "never move to my hood" I was hooked. Very badass!! I like their crazy sound very much. It's got so much attitude and expressiveness.
Ugggggh I am quite jealous!!! In the early 2000s touring for this album, I was getting ready to commute to the venue when I learned that unfortunately their van broke down and the show in Lawrence, Kansas had to be canceled. Sad face. But...I do have high hopes for having another opportunity. I will say that I have found some really fantastic live recording "concerts" on the tube (ie tiny desk on NPRn but really any recording that shows her process.)
I see all you Letterkenny folks; I found this the other day on one of my buddy's IASIP character lists on Spotify, lmfao. And promptly added it to my own, ofc. As others have said, there is no wrong way to discover music you enjoy x
I AGREE she pretty much recreates every song re-sampling and looping her voice and drums on the spot. her timing is gold and she comes over as a very warm lovable person with a childlike enthusiasm
I first heard them on Jimmy Fallon, and I will never understand how talent has moved away from the mainstream. This guys deserve way more spotlight then they are getting in my opinion.
Garrison Stanislaw So Nate Brenner counts as a Tour member ? He is the Bass player As far as I could remember it was her,and Nate who are the originals of Tune Yards. Others just tag along for the tour.
I work in Allsaints in regent street and when ever this song comes on the shop just goes mental and the mood just gets soooooooooo cool and all of life's problems just seem so minuscule :)
First time I heard this song I was heading to my seat at an Arcade Fire concert and watching her warm up. I kept thinking "What the hell is this? It's so weird but really awesome.". Next thing you know a few months later I hear at Barnes & Noble and literally start freaking out "OMG I KNOW THIS SONG!!!"
Nothing more fresh than tune yards's sound... All the rest contemporary bands, even the awarded ones haven't done a step beyond the 70's-90's sound....
I love this song! It really plays with intervals and volume, unlike most songs. At some times it feels as if the track is skipping, but that's not the case here. So unique!
I grew up in a rural town in GA. While I would love to be the kind of person who's been perpetually in the know when it comes to music, or surrounded by adults with eclectic taste. I just wasn't. I was in and out of foster care in tumultuous circumstances. My access to music and the internet has been limited most of my life. I've been spending the last decade finally getting to watch movies I only saw in old magazines at the Doctors office and finding songs I'd only heard in passing, over the loud speakers at stores. I did find this gem of a song watching letterkenny and I think that's okay. Not everybody has had the same access to freely search for media. There's no time limit on good music. ❤
Most unique band ever. No one's ever done what they've done or sounded the way they do. And thanks to Cool TV, I can continuously discover artists that make quality music. On another note, I wonder what the message of this song is.
they are very entertaining and in a sense, unique. but there has been others that have done what they do. fantomas did on their 2004 (or maybe it was 2005) album named "suspended animation". also, a japanese band from the 80's called after dinner did pretty much what they do. i'm not putting tune-yards down by any means. it's nice to hear something different from the usual shit that they pass off as music now-a-days, but there has been others with this sound before them
I used to listen to this after a huge basketball practice at 7:30 while riding home with my friend and we vibed to the song all night and talk about creatures with hats on like little emos in my room the basketball was always a huge w so we acted like bosses
that's awesome. but everyone finds cool music in different ways and it's okay to look for a community of people who found the music the same way you did.
@jeremy parr these are not hipsters. The black keys are hipsters. These are drama club nerds with ADD and a lot of heart and soul. Probably shop a Wal-mart like everybody else. The music is raw and real.
Marc Marti So the definition has become a little vague in the last year or so now that everybody has decided to start using the term. But from my perspective as someone who is a musician/singer/song writer/producer we have been using this term for decades to put a name on the people that tend to leach off of us and wont go away. These are typically people who have "recently moved into the scene", have very little musical talent, live partially off their parents money, and spend their time; pretending that they are a rock star, that know everything about "new" or "cool" music, trying to start a band so that they can get laid and be popular in your local music scene, and are constantly showing up at your gigs/rehearsals/studio so that they can "hang" (get back stage, eat your food, drink your booze, pretend that they are friends with the band). These people are just leaches and will pretty much never accomplish anything substantial, but act like they know everything and everyone who is somebody. They are the rock-n-roll equivalent of a social "gold digger". But the majority of people out here cant distinguish between a hipster and non-hipster. They just think everybody that is not like them, or is a "rock star" is a hipster. The urban dictionary has a decent definition, but it it obviously written by a hipster so its from the hipster viewpoint.
Marc Marti I can also qualify that the Black Keys are (or were at one point hipsters). Its true that some hipster actually do become talented over the years and become something. But they have annoyed every industry person and band in their vicinity during this transformation. I have people in my music scene (x-hipsters) that i completely respect after watching them pay their dues for years, and drop the hipster act bullshit. Jack White can tell you about the Black Keys. Good band but more than likely x-hipsters as everything about them has that vibe. Some bands like tuneyards are far from hipsters. They are nerds, and totally respectable in the scene.
I've been binge watching Letterkenny for the last 2 days & as soon as this song came on in Season 6 Episode 1, while Wayne was at the petroleum station i had to find out what song it was
yyyyeeeeeaaaa i brought myself here because i love TUNE -YARDS...I love when a show brings you to good music...thanks weeds for sharing some tune - yards
Tuneyards have a way of creating music that sounds just off-kilter enough to make the listener stop and wonder why the song sounds so different from everything else out there. This relationship between the known and unknown (on a pshychological forefront) exists in the imagery present in this video. At first it seems that there are repeated clips throughout the video simply for the purpose of reflecting the repeated, siren-like sound that is a motif throughout the movie. But, I believe Tuneyards had a purpose in the repetition of these clips. Firstly, the clips seemed strange and ghastly upon first glance, which plays to a subconscious fear drive and makes the watcher uncomfortable. But upon second (or tenth) inspection, one realizes that the clips are simply everyday clips and each has a potential logical explanation. Therefore, the tuneyards play upon the watcher/listener's discomfort in the face of the unknown/strange in both their music and their videos. This "strange" quality is exactly the appeal of all of their music to me.I think the common motifs between this video and their music are very interestingly connected.
I didn't find it through a show either but that doesn't really mean anything special. I don't see what the purpose of your comment was. They liked the song, they found the song. End of story I don't understand why you felt the need to try to prove that you're superior through a stupid detail like that.
This was an interesting time when this album came out lol I probably never feel as hipster as when I'm listening to Tune Yards, but I don't care. I can live with it.
What's a boy to do if he'll never be a gangsta Anger in his heart, but he'll never be a gangsta If you move into his neighborhood, he'll never make a sound What's a boy to do if he'll never be a rasta Singin' from his heart, but he'll never be a rasta If you move into his neighborhood, he'll never make a sound If you move into his neighborhood Bang bang bang oh Ain't never move to my hood Cause danger is crawling out the wood (x4) What's a girl to do if she'll never be a rasta Singin' from her heart, but she'll never be a rasta If you move into her neighborhood, she'll never make a sound If you move into her neighborhood, she'll never make a If you move into her neighborhood, she'll never make a sound Bang bang bang oh Ain't never move to my hood 'Cause danger is crawling out the wood Hey (You're going to put that on tape for the sake of posterity) (You're ruining the tape) Life in the city (the city) Makes more sense when Jesus comes Bang bang bang oh Ain't never move to Bang bang bang oh Ain't never move to my hood Cause danger is crawling out the wood Bang Bang Bang
