I cover this in my book Wolves in Sheep's Clothing [Amazon Kindle. Smith wrote Wealth of Nations published the same year as the Declaration of Independence which suggests that free trade would suit the new republic. Ben Franklin helped Smith on one of his chapters in his classic.

As a person who took an actual academic course about Adam Smith, I must say that this was so painful to watch; to say that it's corresponding with his thought and philosophy, would be accurate only to a very limited degree; the character itself is a parody of a Scotsman and probably made Adam Smith himself roll in his grave
