I found out about Mooncakes from this children's animated show called Sagwa. It was about a Siamese cat and her family who lived with the Magistrate in ancient China and wrote the laws with their tails, which they dipped in ink. Sadly, no matter how hard I try, I cannot find the mooncake episode. Many episodes are on youtube, though if you are all curious.
Omg I used to watch that when I was a kid! I'm not Asian, I'm European, but that show was AMAZING and I forgot the name of it. And by the way, I remember the mooncake episode. On the website the show had you could make a meal for the emperor and one think you could make was mooncake.
Same! I remember that episode; they told the story of a daughter using mooncakes to smuggle plans to her imprisoned father. The guards ate some of the mooncakes, and the others had tiny scrolls baked inside them. I don't remember what the episode was called, though.
The egg yolk is my favorite part too! It's definitely the best part! You know how sometimes you eat something sweet and then go for something salty or vice versa? The moon cake definitely satisfies that! I'm only familiar with Cantonese style moon cakes, so it it's definitely interesting to see the other types of moon cakes. Lotus seed paste moon cakes are the best!
Having spent Mid-Autumn festival overseas for the past few years, the last part about eating mooncakes with your family over tea while moongazing really got to me because I haven't been eating mooncakes with my family for a while. My family used to stock up a bunch of mooncakes so during the festival period our breakfast and tea times usually has only one food menu: mooncakes
thanks for the informal video on mooncakes! im vietnamese and so i don't know much history behind mooncakes and the different variations. My favourite are the taiwanese mooncakes with durian filling.
I love your channel! As an Asian American, I truly value the Asian culture content that you feature. It reminds me of "home". You guys have a niche that is both very refreshing for Asian Americans and informative for non-Asians at large.
Thanks for sharing this, I'll be using your contribution in my class this afternoon. A great material to practise English and learn a bit about the Chinese culture at the same time.
My favorite moon cake is the teochew style moon cake! So loving the multi-layer skin and taro and pumpkin filling. They taste best when served hot. Now i realized that Singaporeans are super fortunate as we can get almost all the varieties of moon cake mentioned in this video!
Same as you. 蓮蓉月餅 with 2 yolks. I remember we used to get 4 yolks, but we're older now and more health conscious. Also we don't eat the whole moon cake ourselves, we cut into 8 and at most have 2-3 pieces and share with family. A game we would play was to pick the piece with the most yolk. Great video btw!
I had never tried any other moon cakes, just only Cantonese style mooncake and snow skin. My favourite is lotus seed paste and a cup of hot tea. Must have moon cake with a cup of tea is like complimentary.
Hi Bernadette, the festival was yesterday 19th of Sept. I don't think you can order mooncakes at a restaurant in the west, maybe very specialized ones. If you still want mooncakes, they should all be on sale now at Chinese supermarkets.
Most people like lotus seed and egg yolk mooncake. It really depends on your palette though... have you tried salted egg yolks before? And can you eat really dense sweet stuff?
Famous Snow skin mooncake from Singapore is from Goodwood Park hotel. Malaysia also celebrates this festival and have many locally made mooncake with the lotus seed and salted egg as well.
when she was introducing the Cantonese-style mooncakes, she said the names in Mandarin as well as in Cantonese. China has a multitude of dialects! some are so different, they might as well be different languages
I love traditional Cantonese style mooncake with lotus seed paste and egg yolk. But I would like to try some of the ones featured in this video. The Taiwanese style mooncake with the flakey pastry and some taro paste filling looks really good. The more you eat mooncake, the more you will like it. This is the time of year when it is easier to find in specialty stores. I am so happy to have been introduced to this famous Chinese tradition.
I LOVE the Lotus paste one as well, you can eat all the eggs in mine though because I'm not that keen! :D Although I'm health conscious/don't eat it too much, Breadtop makes Lotus Paste with Macadamia which is amazing for me if I do feel like one to myself!!
I only will buy Wing Wah White Lotus with at least two yolks. Wing Wah is the master brand when it comes to mooncake. It costs significantly more than other brands but it's worth it. This year, I got a Wing Wah White Lotus with THREE yolks! I took it to work and shared it and everyone loved it and they can tell it's Wing Wah. (Side story, when I was little and still living in Hong Kong, my house was near the Wing Wah Mooncake bakery and the smell of Wing Wah mooncake makes me so happy!)
I really like the cantonese mooncake with coconut and egg yolk filling! I ♥ the contrast between the sweetness of the coconut and the saltiness of the egg yolk. Delish! Thanks for sharing this! =]
I just ate a mooncake before finding this video online. It was very delicious! I am not Chinese, but this is the time of year for the Moon Festival in China. So, enjoy some mooncakes while they are available in the stores!
2:37 I had this mooncake in Shanghai, it was pepper salt but tasted like fruit and had something green in it. Well, I was given a whole box...they were good but made a mess.
As a kid I didn't really like the egg yolk, but as I'm older now, it doesn't matter to me anymore. We always cut it into small pieced and share it with the whole family hahah My favorite is the Cantonese mooncake with lotus paste and egg yolk :) Haven't tried out the rest though
Thanks for the guide! I've never had these before and my local Chinese supermarket is coming out with a huge variety of mooncakes. I wanted to get a feel for which ones my family would enjoy.
Thanks for the informative video about moon cakes. I never knew that there are so many variety of moon cakes. I normally eat the Cantonese moon cake that fill with lotus seed paste and the egg yolk in it. Unfortunately not too crazy of the egg yolk in it, but now I want to try the moon cake with red bean paste.
I used to buy 苏式月饼 (I think) in the street in Nanjing, but I didn't know it was a moon cake then. When your first exposure to moon cakes is in the U.S., I guess you tend to get the idea that they're all like 广式月饼.
The most common mooncakes in my hometown is Cantonese style and I love red bean paste the most. Suzhou mooncakes are less common, but whenever I find someone selling them, I prefer the salty ones :D~ Just... no more spicy chicken floss or spicy tuna fillings anymore... one time and that's it!
It's so sad, that I'm 1/2 Chinese and never tried a moon cake. I really want to try one! WHY? Thank you for this awesome post Carmen, I hope to try a moon cake soon.
I haven't actually tried all those different types before. My favourite is also the Cantonese style mooncakes- white lotus seed paste with egg yolk (we usually get the double yolk :)). I've also tried to the snow skin mooncakes which I really enjoy as well (although, I guess I'm a little more traditional (and also because I grew up with it), I still prefer the lotus seed paste one.
the mooncake that i always go back to is the traditional cantonese moon cake of lotus seed filling and double egg yolks... but there's alot of wonderful snowskin mooncake from the hotel, here in singapore i love the Durian snowskin and cempedak (like jackfruit but more aromatic!) snowskin. recently i have tried the Custard Mooncake from Penisula Hotel HongKong,..
My favorite was a fruit and nut filled Cantonese style moon cake that one family used to make back in the 1950s (my childhood) . They sold the bakery in the mid 60s but not their special recipe so you can't get them any more. I've come pretty close in fooling with fillings but it still isn't as I remember--maybe because I'm 67 no 7.
#1 favourite is just like yours, cantonese style with lotus seed paste + salted yoks #2 suzhou style flaky outside with savory pork fillings (served hothot!) #3 hongkong style snow skin mooncake served frozen with durian or taro filling!
Loveee the one you love! I usually try to get the one that has double yolk...so good, but so bad for you, haha :) Didn't know there were so many different kinds though!
I don’t know if it was mentioned here or what it’s actually called but I actually made and tried a moon cake with adzuki bean filling. We were studying the autumn festival in my freshman Chinese class in high school. My group made them for our project
cantonese style!!! :D i also love the flaky one with the bean paste, we actually make them where i live.....when i was small i never knew they were actually mooncakes! we just called them "chinese cakes" lol
Cantonese style lotus and egg yolk moon cakes are most definitely my favorite

Yoachan this show was everything omg

childhood done right
The egg yolk is my favorite part too! It's definitely the best part!

OMG - you have revealed a great mystery! Thank you for answering questions I've had about this dessert for many years! Amazing!
Thanks for sharing this, I'll be using your contribution in my class this afternoon. A great material to practise English and learn a bit about the Chinese culture at the same time.
I found out about mooncakes through Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior😂😂😂
They looked so bomb.
I just recently got the chance to try them been wanting them since watching that movie in elementary school
I loved that movie
Mine is also the Cantonese moon cake filled with lotus seed paste with the egg yolk.
You can buy the Cantonese style at your local Chinese supermarkets. If you go to Chinese bakeries they may have some specialized ones.

Nice! Wherever there's Chinese supermarkets there should be mooncakes around this time!

"Enough talking about mooncakes,... What's your favorite mooncake" 😅

I just had my first mooncake yesterday from my Chinese history professor. I believe she brought in the one filled with lotus paste. Very delicious :D
It shouldn't be a problem unless you get the 5 kernel one but you really need to look at the ingredients, just to be safe!
I love this guide videos! I'm Chinese and I do need to know more about all my basics haha
Ahh... the decorated mooncake box... used to keep them to store stuff lol... too pretty don't want to throw it out!

Loveee the one you love! I usually try to get the one that has double yolk...so good, but so bad for you, haha :) Didn't know there were so many different kinds though!
多謝!
I don’t know if it was mentioned here or what it’s actually called but I actually made and tried a moon cake with adzuki bean filling. We were studying the autumn festival in my freshman Chinese class in high school. My group made them for our project
