I just discovered him in Montreal, saw him at Stereo night club September 3rd. We left at 9:30AM and he stayed and played until nearly 3 or 4PM (apparently). I listened to this set in my truck while I was driving on the highway for a few hours... made for such a nice drive :)

Kids, Hernan is been in the game for a LONG time. I saw him played Live in Space Miami main room back in the early 2000's. Even back then he was already an expert, this guy is as legit as it can get. Pure gold.

For anyone who’s interested in getting a deeper understanding of what you're listening to… I’ve pulled together a mini-study of the set - demystifying the art of DJing and showing that it isn’t just pushing buttons! :)
Mood
Hernan plays a progressive style of house in this set - tracks characterised by their complex construction with changing emphasis of motifs / frequencies as the tracks play out. In terms of mood, the tracks are sometimes melancholy, sometimes uplifting in nature and interspersed by a few more darker sounding tracks. Most tracks have longer (32+ beat) melodies which were largely driven by mid/high frequencies.
Energy/Intensity
Hernan starts the set with lower-intensity tracks (as a means of warming the crowd into the set) before moving into mid-range intensity (signaling the start of the set’s second ‘chapter’ at around the 24:00 mark).
From this point the set maintains consistency in the intensity of the tracks (never losing intensity or becoming too aggressive) - this has the effect of providing unity / stability to the story being told. In addition, the mood and the use of melodies driven by the high frequencies are maintained throughout the second chapter up to 54:00 mark. The start of the third chapter coincides with introducing a couple of darker-themed tracks but soon reverts to the mid/high frequency melodic theme.
In terms of key observations of what was done very well:
Marrying Mood/Energy to the Environment
While I’m sure Cercle aims to create perfect marriages of sound and visual with every video, it’s not always guaranteed. (although I put this more down to the DJ who should be aware of the sound that would ‘work’ for the location they are booked to play in)
In this instance however, the set that Hernan puts together is a very good representation of the surroundings. The airplanes, the space rocket - invoking images of flight / being high in the sky / isolated from the world below. The sound which most closely matches this would be tracks that are driven by the higher frequencies and somewhat melancholy - invoking feelings of the isolated nature of space-flight or conversely uplifting in mood (being ‘high in the sky’).
There are some instances in the set where he uses darker sounds as a means of creating contrast to the overall mood (as I’ve noted before in other DJ commentary left on Cercle videos - a story can become ‘stale’ if the same mood is used constantly), but otherwise Hernan does a great job of marrying sound and environment.
Stability Vs Movement
At first glance there isn’t much ‘movement’ in the set construction. The BPM remains virtually the same (123 /124 throughout) the percussion intensity of the track (a key driver of energy for a DJ) remains consistent from 24:00 onwards. The mood also remains relatively consistent, as does the overall ‘feel’ of the set - characterised by mid and higher frequencies. If this same set was constructed for a tech house, funky house or techno DJ set it could quickly become stale and quite boring.
However with the use of progressive tracks (where the tracks themselves have a lot of movement within them) it is in fact a great contrast to the stability of the set structure. In this regard, the progressive track selection takes on much of the heavy lifting and doesn’t require the Hernan to actively manage all the dynamics of storytelling.
Note - for other sub-genre’s of house music, the tracks are produced more like ‘components’ or individual ‘characters’ and designed to be layered by the DJ, whereas for progressive house tracks they are structured almost like a microcosm of a DJ set - 4 beat bass stabs dominate one moment, then gentle mid-frequency piano keys emerge while higher frequency pads creep upon you, filling the sonic range - and these ‘characters’ dance with each other - different frequencies, different motif lengths moving in and out of focus. It therefore makes complete sense that where the tracks are complex and have movement, the structure of the set offers stability and unison in holding the experience together

I’ve only had the privilege of seeing him once live. But I won’t ever forget it and I never get tired of talking about it. Saw him in Houston, TX, back in 2007. The venue closed at 2am. Most people had left before 2am. Not very many people at all there around that time or past that hour. He didn’t stop playing until 4am. Was an amazing night. Probably less than 100 people in the place past 2 and this man still continued to take the few of us left to another dimension of bliss through the music he mixes. You can tell he has a deep love for the music and he loves what he does. My all time fav DJ. I lack words to express completely how mind blowing he is live. May he live a long and happy life.
Yesss - I saw him last year in Boston on the Friday after Thanksgiving. With how transient Boston is, the city is usually dead around this time. He was spinning for the whole night (10PM-2AM) with no openers. We got there around 10:30 and danced all night. Easily one of the best shows I've ever been to.

Hernán Cattáneo is probably the best prog house DJ we have ever witnessed. I saw him for the first time at a nightclub in Hollywood back in 2004 and then again at Turnmills in London in 2006, where I greeted and had my picture taken with him after his amazing DJ set. Good times and great memories indeed! And btw, this set was epic - thank you, Cercle!

Yes, of course... in every interview he makes, he says the same thing. "When you go to a restaurant you don't beggin with dessert.... you get the "entrée", then first course, the second one, and then dessert, coffe and champagne toste..." With his sets is more o less the same, Even better if it's a long set, maybe 3.or 4 hours... they are a journey... beggin slowly, then "incescendo"... and then, rest in the final... never needed any drug better than listening.to his remarkable selections of track and flawless mixes. I’ve see Hernan live 10 times. Been following him since his Masters Series vol1. He’s made such an incredible career for himself, good to see Cercle giving him the honor he deserves. He normallly does 5-6 hours sets, this feels like 2 hours of prime groove peak time, beautiful stuff!

The first track "hours go by" has a sad and melancholic mood, then comes "Underwater" with the melodic bass line, the amazing female lyrics, changes the mood into an atmosphere more happy but still melancholic, and then "Extassy" arrives... OMG just love and happiness, and to finish this chapter, "Homeboy" with a build up and FXs perfectly done.

I remember the first time I saw Cattaneo back in June 2000 in 🇵🇪 He wasn’t much well known back then… But that night he surely did introduce himself to a crowd that was still trying to gain a name in this new movement. Saw him 4 more times after that and to he honest, after 22 years, it is nice to see that this man keeps up with his style and can take you for a flight ✈️ at anytime.

Some of the crowd shots are funny, looks like a vibrant group.....love to see people having fun again at festivals. Halfway thru listening and super impressed with Hernan's vibe which is smooth and steady. He is such a veteran player. Honored that i got to play on the same stage with him many full moons ago at a beach party in Acapulco...Cercle always gets a thumbs up from me for originality in picking spots to record.

I remember looking forward to his sets back in 98-2000, especially in Pacha Buenos Aires, and then meeting him later in Miami. Always the same chill dude, but committed and dedicated to the music. Hard to find DJ's like that anymore, who stood the test of time. Still going strong. He was the soundtrack of my life for what seemed to be forever. And he elevetad the genre in Argentina, popularizing many other greats, yet standing shoulder to shoulder with them. Makes me proud to say I'm Argentinian, and I was there. And still am. His mucis has changed and evolved, as it should. But he comes through just the same.
For me it was a once in a lifetime experience to walk in such a magical place with friends, on earth without maps , without boundaries, where people just enjoyed the music.
Thank you Hernan and Cercle for this amazing experience, forever grateful ♥️🙏
