  • I stayed at Lakes Edge Holiday Park, Tekapo, for 5 nights in mid-October (springtime). In the video, I discuss the things I liked and disliked about this holiday park so you can decide if this holiday park is right for you.
I enjoyed my stay and the proximity to everything. It's close to Tekapo Springs, and it is an easy walk to Tekapo's cafes and supermarket.
Here is the Tekapo playlist if you'd like to watch the videos about Tekapo Springs or the video about the cafes I had brunch at:

There is also a small freedom camp 7 km out of Tekapo if you're wanting to save some money by staying a night there.
    Happy travels :)

If you are on a budget, you could also try staying at this freedom camp 7km from Tekapo: th-cam.com/video/lBS0dpjidq4/w-d-xo.html
I normally alternate between freedom camps and holiday parks to get the best of both.

Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki are the prettiest lakes I've ever seen.

This is very useful, thank you. We may be visiting the campground in a few days.

I loved that campground. If you're into photography, it's a dream because the turquoise lake looks so good against the park's green grass. You might find the cost is still expensive now though - I went in spring, which is the off-season when it's cheap.

@@caravanlifenz We went camping down at Moeraki a few weeks ago and there were already some campgrounds closed in the area which I found strange.

Freedom camps or holiday parks? It's common in the South Island for freedom camps to close once the rain and cold nights begin. Here in Canterbury, it's been dry all March, so it's been great. It makes up for an awful December :)

I can't remember the place now - but I do wonder why a freedom camping spot would close when nobody needs to run the place :)

I thought the same thing when I bought my caravan and saw that freedom camps close over winter. Part of it is because they don't want the grass ripped up (people driving on it when it's muddy kills it and leaves bald patches, especially if bogans get in there and do donuts). The other reason is that the councils pay for cleaners which is expensive. In Canterbury, the Selwyn Council provides a cleaner every day in summer at Chamberlains, Coes and their other freedom camps, which is expensive. So they close up the camps in winter to save money on services (rubbish collection, cleaning etc).

This camp has replaced the one that was below this on the waters edge. The whole area has changed in a few short years with many trees removed. The previous camp was old and dated having been around for yonks. It's a known fact that during summer accommodation increases in tariff..

That campsite is popular in both summer and winter. I was so glad I stayed in spring - I got to enjoy the beauty of the lake for a fair price :) It's a magical view.
