Billy Howerdel’s most well-known as the co-founder, co-songwriter, lead guitarist and producer of A Perfect Circle, as well as in his solo project, Ashes Divide. A Perfect Circle’s first 2 albums (Mer de Noms & Thirteenth Step) went platinum, and all 4 of their albums opened up in the Top 5 Billboard charts. Billy’s got a new solo record out, called What Normal Was. It’s an awesome record filled with very cool ambient electronic rock, great songwriting as always, and great lyrics.

Mer De Noms is the album that means the most to me above all else. The times that I’ve spent with that album, good and bad, have completely shaped me as a human. When I first heard that CD, it didn’t leave my CD player for 3 years. I’m a massive fan of Billy, he seems like such a sweetheart, I’d love to meet him some day and give him a hug and thank him.

@@namelesstempleI feel like an idiot with my handle lol, but absolutely APC came out when I REALLY needed them and Billy's playing is in my very bones as a guitarist. I would work for free to get to work with him. Also him mentioning Jerry Cantrell who is literally the reason I picked up a guitar blew my mind!!! I love this guy even more now 😂.

Billy is such an ICON! He creates the most timeless, insanely beautiful and powerful music. I was SO fortunate to have been able to meet and speak with him on his solo tour. Hands down one of the coolest, most laid back musicians I’ve ever met! I think he would’ve continued talking to me if I hadn’t been the one to end the conversation. Such an awesome person/artist all around! His music is on my daily rotation and has been since 2000(Mer De Noms), I was 13 years old. I cannot explain how many times I’ve been having a hard time in my life and could throw on some APC & zone out and change my mood in that moment. Thank you, Billy, for sharing your art with us all & being so willing to acknowledge us, as fans & giving us your time to simply hand us a guitar pick or sign a poster, you’re one of the greats!!! 🖤

I'd do anything for an audition to work with Billy Howerdell, I'm 36, I have no kids, I have my shit together, pro gear, I'm fully qualified, willing to uproot my life, I have no commitments. For years I've learned the APC songs, the NIN songs ect ect and not ever was there any way to reach someone to be like " hey, I'm literally obsessed with trying to dedicate my entire purpose to your band, how do I get to even say "yo, what's up". I see all the bands I wanna play a part in hire new member after new member and I'm just like , " fuck, it's like these guys are on the other side of the galaxy".So many of these guys have exactly the same tastes as I do, it would be amazing just to jam in a garage with them. Theres so many guitar players getting gigs who have kids, and drug problems, or arent fully commited ect ect, I'm fuckin getting old here. Maybe I need to go viral doing something idiotic to get an audition. I'd literally work and tour for free. Seriously, somebody hit me up, Ive got two les pauls, a marshall and a backpack.

Honestly it comes down to being in proximity with the people. If you’re in the sphere of musicians you’ll have a million times better chance of a meet or audition. For example I moved to Los Angeles and meet all the guys from APC backstage in Hollywood after only living here three months.

@@EveryoneLovesGuitar The moment you were talking about addiction and self help was deeply touching for me. The both of your faces showed a few times how deep that conversation got for you. I can relate. With a childhood like mine one tends to get into abusive relationships and self destructive behavior, because that is what you know from home. My life crashed when i was about 27 and i fell into a heavy addiction for 3 years. This year January 22nd i had my 60th birthday and 30 years clean. 🤓👍
Oh, more more thing for you personally, when it comes to being "free and weightless": Imagine trauma as stone bricks in a backpack. Many of us have some kind of trauma related baggage, that we have to shoulder on a daily basis. Life will put more pressure on all of us, may it be through the job, kids and family issues, health problems of yourself or of a loved one, or anything else what life comes up with. Who do you think, will sustain more pressure on the long run? The person that wears a backpack with half a ton of stone bricks on his back, or the person who did the work to lessen the load? The answer should be quite simple. Even if is hard work and may hurt like hell, pulling out each trauma related stone brick will lessen the burden on the long run and will make your live a lot easier to handle.

I had no idea Billy was from my area. I grew up near stone pony. I seen perfect circle at the asbury park convention center when they first started and it was the most romantic concert I’d ever been too. They were all so into it. I had seen tool before and it was okay but seeing APC in a small place near home was a real live experience. It was super hot and we were nuts to butts and people smoking funny stuff but out of all the concerts I’ve seen in my life that was the best. Billy is amazing. I’d love to meet him n chat n jam He inspired me so much coming from being a tech to playing in APC.

I remember the old MTV days when Billy and Maynard would pop up, and the music of A Perfect Circle felt just as timeless then as it does now. IMO rock gods like Billy seeking more recognition in the evolving music scene can adapt by embracing social media and engaging directly with fans, while focusing on authentic live performances and collaborations with emerging artists. By leveraging online platforms and advocating for fair recognition, they can navigate the changing landscape while staying true to their musical roots.

Starting in the 90s almost every band had a bald guy in the lineup and that was the point where it was ok to be bald.

@@EveryoneLovesGuitar You're welcome. I saw a few times when Jerry Cantrell appeared on camera with said vehicle multiple times. They are nice vehicles.

Guitar centered music are very boring to me. Perfect Circle is a great band in the 90’s and in the 90’s there were so many guitar centered bands but I moved on.

Billy I dont understabd how the fake it till you make it is denial. I kbow thats not wxactly how you lut it but Id love to know what you mean with that whole thing. Ive had a path with some sinilarities to yours, and the fake it till you make it thing is the only thing that ever worked, Id just say, "yup I can do it" and id figure it out. I never had any college degree and dis work with a lot of my favorite performers as a stagehand, carp, electrics, guitar tech ect. This is the most enjoyable interview youve ever done. Thanks Everyonelivesguitar.
