Selassie never claimed to be God or Jesus but was the head of the Ethiopian monarchy and continually promoted his Orthodox Christian roots. I think the late singer Garnet Silk said it best - Christ in his kingly character. There are people who show up in the course of the history of time and have an impact and no doubt Halie Selassie was a devout believer.

Interesting insights into an area often misunderstood by so many. Let's look at a few things covered in this documentary: 1. The name Jah is a name "all" Christians (regardless of denomination) should be identified/associated with (Psalms 68: 4). Weirdly enough only Rastafarians use this name...any guess.
    2. Nazareen Vow: The abstinence of certain foods (meat etc) isn't a legalistic requirement given that Yeshua (Jesus) has satisfied the Creator's righteous requirement.
In essence, Rastafari is the remarkable story of when a man became God but was always God from the beginning. We (72 nations) of the world gave our tacit approval that He, Qedamawi Haile Selassie 1 is the Almighty Creator of all things (Psalms 87). Ironically enough, we even made Him into the world's most decorated statesman in history (ref: Ethiopia Shall Stretch Forth Her Hands Unto God - Gregory Copley). The title comes from Ps. 68, which came to pass when He returned to His country on 5th May, 1936.
Those who will judge/evaluate the 'life and times' of H. I. Majesty may well wonder (or reasonably ask themselves) is this God Himself?
Our audience will have to reconcile whether there can be 2 'King of Kings and Lord of Lords'....I think most will resign and say not...unless the devine is the author of confusion?....A watch of: Haile Selassie 1 visits the Vatican 1970 ( TH-cam).....this is the "terror of truth". Nugget: Footage shows that the emperor choses the door of His choosing to enter. Is it because He is the door??...(you can decide). Questions are always welcomed!....Also, check out my latest reggae release on TH-cam 'Serious Times' (and much more!).

I'm from South Africa, I have many Rasta friends. Grew up on Bob Marley and other musical struggle icons from various genres and backgrounds (who my parents listened to during their years of struggle against the Apartheid regime).
To me, I see Rastafarians as the 20th century equivalent of 21st century "Hebrew Israelites". Much like the 20th century "Nation of Islam" and "Black Muslims" as well, who I feel fall into the same category.
These were sociocultural and sociopolitical reactionary movements formed during their respective eras in history. The children of the diaspora, confused, misguided, oppressed, and faced with a serious identity crisis, began creating their own.
    Afrocentric subcultures and/or countercultures
is what it is, and what it was.

As Rastafarians, we must always be on guard against any kind of dogma determining the tenets of the Philosophy of RASTAFARI. In other words, we must be willing to examine the contents of our beliefs, the origin of our beliefs, the logic of our beliefs, and the probable truth or falsity of our beliefs. Three of the original tenets of the Rastafarian Movement were (1) the belief in the authority of the Bible as the word of God, (2) the belief in the Deity of His Imperial Majesty (HIM) Emperor Haile Selassie I, and (3) the concomitant notion that HIM was the reincarnation of the reputed Jewish rabbi commonly known in the English-speaking world as Jesus Christ and who as certain schools of thought insist could be the only true bearer of the title "King of Kings and Lord of Lords", together with all of the other epithets attributed to Jesus in the Bible. Now, as everyone knows, the Founding Fathers of the Movement, including Leonard Howell, Archibald Dunkley, and Joseph Hibbert were adherents of Christianity before becoming proselytes of RASTAFARI. A similar observation could also be made of The Right Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey and HIM. Other early Rastafarian leaders like Ras Boanerges, who founded the Order of the Nyabinghi, Prince Emmanuel, who founded the Bobo Shanti Order, and Vernon Carrington, who founded the House of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, also had a Christian upbringing. Meanwhile, as the history of the development of social movements shows, every social organization derives its genesis as an offshoot of the antecedent institution with which its members were previously associated. The same is true in the case of Judaism and Christianity, Christianity and Islam, Zoroastrianism and Buddhism, and all of the other great social institutions which have been in existence for millenniums. As a fledgling social movement that is barely 90-plus years young, RASTAFARI is still in the process of shedding its bonds with Judeo-Christianity and asserting itself as an institution that is more than just a radicalized black version of Christianity. While a wide cross-section of Rastafarians continues to hold on to the teachings of the original leaders, a growing number of Bredrens and Sistrens, like General Thau Thau and this commenter, have shown their willingness to take up the mantle and take the Movement to the next philosophical level. Accordingly, the present crop of Rastafarians is hardly satisfied to settle for any type of dogmatic belief, rituals, or practices. To the contrary, today's Rastafarians are determined to ground the Philosophy of RASTAFARI in logic and verifiable knowledge, rather than blind faith in the Bible and Christian theology. Thus, if one were to seriously consider that one of the attributes of GOD is His OMNIPOTENCE and if, as is generally intimated by detractors of the Movement, HIM had to plead with the Member States of the United Nations (U.N.) for help in crushing the Italian invasion in 1935, the question of whether HIM truly satisfies the conditions to be regarded as a Deity must come to the fore. And so, before one could conclude that HIM is GOD, the concept of GOD and the attributes of GOD must be sufficiently enunciated. And any entity that fails to satisfy the necessary conditions must' of necessity be ruled out from the category. Even so, when one considers the origin of the CHRISTOLOGICAL DOCTRINE, the profound influence that Christianity had on the early formation of the Movement, and the fact that HIM had made it clear that he wanted to have nothing to do with the claim that he is God, the proper place of HIM in the Movement should not be regarded as an Achilles heel in the Philosophy of RASTAFARI. Accordingly, if RASTAFARI is to avoid being a static copycat organization, such kinds of philosophical exercises must be brought to bear on the notion of the pre-eminence of the Bible, on the notion of Haile Selassie as the Black Christ, etc., etc. For it is only by allowing the Movement to develop in a dynamic manner that it would be truly worth being recognized as a dialectical synthesis of enlightened BLACK Thinkers, and as a philosophical vehicle for articulating the COLLECTIVE experiences, hopes, and aspirations of the AFRICAN People; as envisaged by HIM, Prophet Marcus, and so many others. Moreover, it is only by so doing that the NEW WORLD ORDER that HIM had so wholeheartedly espoused and had so eloquently outlined in his speech to the U.N. in 1963 could be actualized.

So, basically Rasta is living what Jesus stood for..? That’s why Rasta’s more a “lifestyle” and not a religion itself… Which most religious people don’t live “the way”… and I don’t say that with one iota of “hate” against anyone, mind you. I’m just telling it like it is. Unfortunately most don’t fully grasp or integrate what Jesus stood for… They look to and worship Jesus outside themselves. Instead of walking the walk and honoring the God within, in others and all life, like Jesus means to reveal. He lead by example…
“For, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.”
“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do because I go to the Father.”
In other words when you understand and believe in what Jesus was capable of, you can do it also - and more - because it all stems from the Almighty Creator, and we are likewise creators, made in God’s image… That’s my two cents for what it’s worth, makes sense to me.

Rastafari was a devout Christian & Defender of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Faith, he was a Descendant of King Solomon & Makeda, Queen of Sheba, making him both from the Line of David & the Line of Moses (Moses had an Ethiopian Wife in his youth as general of the Egyptian Army & Makeda's Royal Family came from that line) which means he was the Rightful Ruler, Custodian of God's Throne on Earth, holding the Scepter of Judah...He was a great Christian philosopher & a lover of life, liberty & human dignity, and should be treated as such by modern Christians, Jews & Rastas alike...and I'm not well-versed enough but I'd venture to say even Islam held the Throne of David in high esteem.

To our mother father source creator there is no religions, another thing saying love or unconditional love only comes when you respect and love all life , you killing and eating the animals that is not unconditional love for all life ,I will only say this once, all humanity have a soul however not all humanity have a soul connection, eating meat is a low frequency activity this alone shows clearly that you got no connection to you soul, eating meat is cannibalism eny meat what soever, you lot don't have body disciplines ,then you don't know that it's a inside job and not a outside job,Jesus is enki sky god,Christ mean consciousness in in all humanity,to say Selassie is the creator it proved how far away you are, there is only one man born birth name Rastafari he can show that on is birth certificate can any of you dread birth certificate shows you are Rastafari no,then you need to do some research on you self because if you say Selassie is the son of God as you call the name of source in your language terms who's son and who's daughters are you lot ,am waiting for the answer.

@@MrAdrianjohnson psalms 87 has nothing to do with salassie you misinterpret scripture.
      Sela does not mean selassie.
When Jesus comes again He will descend with millions of angels and will destroy the earth with the brightness of His comming and the elements shall melt.
Everyone will see Jesus in the air when He comes again in His body.
The wicked will be destroyed and the righteous dead will be resurrected.
The righteous that are alive will meet the Lord in the air to recieve a new body liken unto His glorious body.
      This did not selassie.
Selassie was a man, selassie himself said he is mortal.
You cant claim someone is God when they themselves said they are not immortal.
Matthew24:23¶Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.
24For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
25Behold, I have told you before.
26¶Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.
27For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
28For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.
      (Mark 13:24-27; Luke 21:25-28 )
29¶Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
30And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
31And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
