The Vallée des Merveilles was too crowded for our taste and not nearly as impressive as, e.g., Grand Gulch in the Four Corners areas of the USA. Outside the well-trodden tourist areas the Mercantour was really fabulous. In fact, I'm using a photo of Lac Saorgine & Mont Bégo for my Facebook banner page. The sunrise, the morning we climbed Bégo, was absolutely fabulous.
@@OvertheHills Hey we got back Tuesday from our trip. GR52 was VERY DIFFICULT! You were right about The Vallée des Merveilles. Too crowded...a total tourist trap. Nonetheless, we enjoyed our first hiking trip. We were thinking about doing either The Stevenson Trail or the GR20 next.
I don't know anything about the Stevenson trail, but I believe the GR20 is very crowded. You should consider the Pyrenees. The HRP, GR10 and GR11 are all fabulous, as is a loop around Andorra, either coronallacs.com/en/ or visitandorra.com/en/nature/grp-andorra-la-volta-a-tot-un-pais/.
We spent a week in Bulgaria then a week in Romania and now we're in Italy ready to complete the AV2 in the Dolomites. We got snowed out of the Dolomites 2 years ago, half way through the AV2.
