I will say one thing I love about the sound design is I love how the Pokemon have more realistic and more animal-like sounds instead of just different variations of them saying their names over and over again (the exception being Pikachu). They sound like how you'd actually expect. The Wailmer/Wailord sound like actual whales, bat-like Pokemon like Woobat and Noibat sound like how bats would sound, and the more canine-like Pokemon sound like how actual canines would sound in the wild. I think it's going to happen. Yeah the game was developed by Namco, but I'm fairly confident it will be receiving the same treatment as a Nintendo game, since we are considering Pokemon flagship Nintendo franchise, even though they never developed any of these games ^^' And currently Nintendo aims for "longevity", at least one content update and/or DLC, so I'd say it's somewhat likely Snap is getting DLC within the next 8 months
Not gonna lie, the game got better reviews than I expected. I thought it was gonna be a niche 5 hour game with a average rating of 6.5/10, but it turns out to be more ambitious than that.
imo that rating is pretty accurate, though. the game simply doesn't offer enough content to justify its full price. it's a good game with beautiful graphics but it's way too repetitive and grindy too so yea, not worthy of its ridiculous price tag. it had to be at 39€ or less.
Wow; I feel this younger generation really miss the whole point of this series. It's not meant to be seen from a 'logical gaming' point of view. It is an art form and it's own entity or even genre. Reviewing the game using 'gamer credentials or knowledge' is silly. Masuda wants this to be a tribute to a Pokémon Classic and bring more of the same relaxing and Charming fun into the Modern era. But many people are treating this as any other game like Monster Hunter =/
@@netweed09 In the end of the day, it's still a game. And if you're only getting like 8 hours out of this game, then 60 € is just a bit too much. In the end of the day most people will like play if for 8 hours max and that's a bit too less for that high price in my opinion.
I feel a lot of it boils down to nostalgia for the old N64 game. This is basically the same game with a few minor additions and far superior visuals. So if you are someone who loved the old game, you will absolutely have a blast with this. But otherwise, it's largely a basic rail shooter with a lot of repetition.
@@09VR strongly agree about the music. The lost motif is tragic because it had such a strong identity that would have been powerful to hear after a 20-year wait.

As for the music, probably the first game having this retro music helps to stand out.
Honestly, I love the on-rails gameplay and I wish that they made more on-rail games. It's like a fun ride at an amusement park. And it has a fun retro arcade feel to it as well.
BRUIN1821 I agree it is a bit sad to have that feature cut. Even though it wasn't that often in the original it was still a great addition to the formula.
I thought about that at first.... but then I just realized something. The game goes on a 1-4 Star rating. For the evolutions to be in-game you would need to make them appear in some way (Apple, glow balls, etc.) and THEN Snap a unique picture. You would have to do this 4 times, and each pic would have to differ (to the 1-4 star rating). And this is per pokemon evolution.

Played and mastered the original as a kid. This game is wonderful and does its legacy proud. If you grew up in the nineties and are tired of remakes messing up the experience, buy this game!
I have two gripes with it. In snap 1, changing paths was cooler. You'd blow up a pokemon or some weird event would happen to divert to a new path or area. In snap 2 you just scan a circle.
I fully agree with this review.. I think it's crazy though that some of the hidden paths are Waaaayyyyy better than some of the regular map. For example the Forest hidden path is amazing... Could've had that as a main part of the map... No evolving is a let down and also Shinies???? Let's not add Shinies which is one of the most popular elements of the pokemon brand.....
Ikr? Plus, whereas the 1st had just Mew as the 'end Prize', the new one may only still have just over 200 Pokémon but there are over 6 Legendaries/Mythicals now. Some serious and my favourite Pokémon are there and the visuals just immerse you in totally. They horribly underscored it here
Hylian Champion Then you would most likely love it. Been waiting for this for 22 years myself. It definitely delivers despite the few problems that it has.
I disagree on the voice acting. I thought it was stale and poorly done, but you're absolutely right that a fully voiced cutscene followed by some half-assed dialogue totally does detract from the experience. In my playthrough I have muted the voice acting and I am enjoying it much more since I did so.
What if they add DLC that adds another island/environment with new Pokémon (mythical/Legendary/normal) I would love to catch a diancie under a cherry blossom tree
I’m having fun with this game so far! I hope that there will be more areas added in the future. I also wish that the voice acting would have been throughout the entire game instead of being used in certain cutscenes. The trails could be a bit longer and give us options in terms setting our own pace when exploring. The graphics and music are really good though.
I got so tired of the voice acting that I had to change languages so at least I couldn't understand them anymore. Edit: Eventually I ended up just playing the OG Pokemon Snap OST on TH-cam, because the music in this game was super boring.

I'm put off by the fact that it's on rails. I think it should be open world/areas. I think having to go out and find the pokemon would make the experience more immersive, instead of having all the pokemon right there in front of you.
Making it open-world would have come with deminishing returns on investment... Possible? Yes. realistic? Not really. This game works so well becsuse it's a controlled, interactive cinematic experience. Sure making it open would be "more awesome" in concept but the experience would have suffered as a result. Or rather the amount of time and money to make it a worthwhile experirncw would Not have been profitable
I love the on rails gameplay a lot but I genuinely think having an open world Pokemon Snap would be pretty awesome. Hopefully if this game is popular enough they might do a spin off open world version.
Obviously Pokemon Snap for n64, made 20 years ago, is the better coded game.. how is it possible that a 1999 game preforms more interestingly then one made today? What changed?
For the most part. Pokemon was still building it's brand. It wasn't like today where pokemon is solidly at the top with almost no competition. Pokemon still had to work it's way up there. And every bug and mistake noticeable was a likely point off their review score. And now that it is at the top and people will blindly defend the franchise and it's owners. And swallow everything whole cloth, Pokemon doesn't need competent design. Unfortunately... But there is a silver lining. Ask the dumbasses who have managed the Disney corporation how that's gone over the lash decade and you'll see they have done nothing but get deeper and deeper into a money pit. And when the big N hears about this they'll clean their shit up real fast.
It honestly feels soooooo much like the original... just better animations, graphics, maps, etc... but overall gameplay didn’t feel any different then the original, just kinda wish there was i game evolutions, but other then that it’s Perfect beyond belief

Is no one gonna mention the UI? The unskippable tutorials? That BAD mobile-game quality unlock animation with the gift box? I LOVE this game. But many elements of the menu system seem designed for mobile game, rather then the switch. It's grating.
@Ritchie Janssen Dude that is unrealistic beyond belief, it’s only been 4 years you really think it’s gonna be 4K in handheld mode or even TV mode, also they are making a slightly bigger switch with better battery, they wouldn’t release that if they were making a switch pro
The game is great but I found the music was really generic and boring. Thankfully you can turn it right off. Also your “pokeflute” noise is extremely grating and repetitive.
Personally? I think you were a bit too harsh. While your complaints are justified, I don't think they are all that bad if you consider what Pokemone Snap is. A experiment if there is still interest in Pokemon's more obscure IP's. The original snap, while having a pretty significant cult following these days, is a rather obscure title. The fact that it got a successor was suprising to say the least. The reason it did probably had to do with the massive sucess and praise the mystery dungeon remake got. It showed Pokemon that there was still sufficient interest in their spin off titles which they probably wanted to explore futher. So keeping all of this in mind, it's very understandable why they tried to play it somewhat save with new Pokemon snap, focusing on small gameplay innovations and making the experience more emersive rather then trying to reinvent the wheel. Things such as Voice acting and being able to slow the cart down are risk factors. What if the voice acting wasn't well resived and you constantly got you ear talked off by the professor and his crew? Just having it predominantly in the cut scenes is less risky and also cost less then having the game be fully voiced. Slowing the cart down sounds easy from a player's point of view, but as a person who currently is learning to code, I totally understand why they would opt out of it. Snap is very obviously a script based game where the pokemon have a set routine. Special events get triggered by player interactions. That's what makes the game play seem so emersive, because there is so much going on around you at any given moment. So say you could drastically slow the cart down or even stop it completely? Suddenly most of the pokemon will be just doing their idle animation That or the dev team would have to put several more hours into the KI of all the pokemon so they don't just blankly stare at you because you decided to spent several minutes just taking pictures of them. I can totally see why they didn't go for this approach, from a developers point of view it would be a nightmare and also would make the pokemon interactions probably less fun, or they would have to run several skripts on a loop which again sounds like a coding nightmare because *so much* can go wrong there. It seems like a simple concept on a surface level for people looking in from the outside but actually is a lot more complex to implement then you would think. Especially with the budgetary restrictions they probably had. I can assure you, had they attempt this there would be a 90% chance the game play would have ended up worse then it is now with a lot more gliches and potential to just break the game. Giving the player more interaction possibilities adds more variables, which equals more work and more possibilities to just fuck things up. So it was either giving the player a set path to follow at a set pace with scripted but extensive prokemon interactions and limited player interactions Or reducing the amount of unique pokemon interactions and shots you could get, drastically complicate the code required for the levels and for the evaluation process (which is also a thing people don't seem to take into account. The evaluation very much takes the script into acount to calculate weather or not the picture shown is a rare moment, for that the game must know when and where the picture was taken and if the script executing said event was triggered.) And risk creating a overall worse gameplay experience. Considering on top of this all who the intended target audience is of the game and you can clearly see why they decided to not take risks and rather stick to methods they knew would give them good results. Rather then put money into aspects that are risky and easily could blow up in their face they focused on the aspects that where essential for the games intended purpose. Having amazing graphics, solid sound design and fun level experiences. Puting the charm factor of the pokemon into the main focus by having them behave in a manner that would be organic for them. Sometimes playing it save isn't always the worst approach. It prevents making mistakes that wouldn't be necessary. So in my opinion, considering the circumstances and looking at it from a perspective of somebody with some coding experience, I would cut the game more slack.
What do you think about this game as an entry point into Pokémon? My daughter has watched some of the old anime but at age 7, hasn’t delved into any of the main line games. Is there a lot of text dialog/instruction outside of the voice acting? My daughter loves taking photos with her fire and I thought she might think was a fun game concept.
its absolutely perfect for that. Theres no technical knowledge required, its just observing behaviour, pointing and clicking for good pictures. sure she'll love it
It would be perfect for her! Although if you want her to play some older mainline games at some point, it might be hard to jump from amazing modern graphics to 2d for the older ones. But this is a perfect starter game especially if she likes taking photos:)
Harsh? Not at all. It's only harsh if you don't understand what this type of game is It's like nothing else that exists. It's bliss! It's nostalgia. It's wholesome. Can't wait to play it. Getting it tomorrow
zoroark MASTER It would just be to much work and would also mean less areas since they’ll have to work more than twice as much on other areas Also the unique interaction wouldn’t be possible if it was open world. It’s just not a good idea and would gave us less content and less lively Pokémon interaction.
Look, I understand people wanting to have these kinds of graphics and models for the mainline games, but my only concern with that will be that Nintendo will no longer be able to fit the game on a cartridge and instead will have to go full digital with their product. Making an entire Pokemon game where you are decently free to roam around as you please would require immense amounts of modeling work. All pokemon regions are decently size too, not to forget all the pokemon and all the different effects that would have to be placed in said world, to put all that data into small cartridges would be extremely difficult. I personally don't have too much of an issue with buying digital games, hell, you can take em anywhere as long as you have the console. However, I'm also a decent fan of physical games, and I just don't think that would be possible anymore if we were to have a Pokemon game with such fleshed out details, though if there was a possibility, I'd gladly welcome it.
You do realise BOTW and Monster Hunter fit on a cartridge just fine, right? Gamefreak's graphics are bad because they are lazy. Not because of any technical limitations.
it's amazing, and definitely bounds and leaps better than anything pokemon we have had in a while, my only disappointment would really be that you can't make pokemon evolve like the original, was looking forward to that... but still, pretty good game.
I would never pay $60 for this game, even if reviews gave it 10 out of 10. There's just no justification for that price. I can take pictures of Pokémon, through Pokémon Go, standing next to me at the bus stop I take to work. This is for sure a down grade on the photographing Pokémon experience. Ooooooh...you bonk them in the head, and they do something. I don't need it. All I need is Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
My only complaint is the price, it’s the same price as sword and shield, a main line game, it should be $40, if it had more levels I would agree with the price of $60
I would say ur being a bit harsh I've seen PT on YT and its convinced me to play this game despite me being dirt poor and 60 bucks is 90 for my country.
Tbh, as far as "brutally honest" goes this was a pretty positive review. I believe he even said something like some people might find this worth $60 but if you don't I still recomend playing it if you get the chance.
I DON'T want the next game (should it exists) to be called new pokemon snap 2. I want them to just cut the whole "NEW" thing entirely and acknowledge the game as it's own thing that doesn't rely on being the 'new version of an old game' as part of its identity to stand out
I have to disagree completely. Saying you wish you could slow down or stop moving so you can catch a better picture even as a post game unlock skill would be like Saying you wish the enemies in GTA would stop moving so I could get a clear shot. The moving rail is the core of the games mechanics. Without it, it's not much of a game. Online scores would all be the same if you could do this and the reward of getting the perfect picture would none existent. It's a simple fun game for fans and new players to the pokemon universe. You did an okay review but your negatives points are reaching and would break the game completely if they changed the game based on them.

I think it's going to happen. Yeah the game was developed by Namco, but I'm fairly confident it will be receiving the same treatment as a Nintendo game, since we are considering Pokemon flagship Nintendo franchise, even though they never developed any of these games ^^'
And currently Nintendo aims for "longevity", at least one content update and/or DLC, so I'd say it's somewhat likely Snap is getting DLC within the next 8 months
@@RancorSnp you were right lol
@@DihStyle69 Yeah true, probably about 30 or 40$
@@netweed09 In the end of the day, it's still a game. And if you're only getting like 8 hours out of this game, then 60 € is just a bit too much. Yeah, replayabilty is high and you definitely need longer if you want a diamond picture everywhere, but many people expected more content for this new game.
No evolutions?? That was the best part of the old games. Making dugtrios and magetons...
Technically, I was able to get a combee to evolve. I think.
Can't get past that, game starts to feel boring after awhile, feels like there's less interaction than the original. Music is inferior aswell...
@@09VR strongly agree about the music. The lost motif is tragic because it had such a strong identity that would have been powerful to hear after a 20-year wait.
Eh, I wouldn't say "best". And there was only one old game.
And the plural for all Pokemon is singular. (And you spelled Magneton wrong.)
@@09VR "less interactions" ??????? lmao there'is this system of having 4 levels for each pokemon so the game makes your search for taking pictures of different kinds of behaviors, that makes it more than 800 pictures that needs to be taken and sometimes there are several special behaviors worth two/three stars and so on, it actually got so much more interaction than the first one, it's insane. As for the music, probably the first game having this retro music helps to stand out.
Honestly, I love the on-rails gameplay and I wish that they made more on-rail games. It's like a fun ride at an amusement park. And it has a fun retro arcade feel to it as well.

I agree it is a bit sad to have that feature cut.

A heathy fan in it's natural habitat! Be sure to snap a picture this is a once in a lifetime encounter!
Suddenly most of the pokemon will be just doing their idle animation
That or the dev team would have to put several more hours into the KI of all the pokemon so they don't just blankly stare at you because you decided to spent several minutes just taking pictures of them.
So it was either giving the player a set path to follow at a set pace with scripted but extensive prokemon interactions and limited player interactions
Or reducing the amount of unique pokemon interactions and shots you could get, drastically complicate the code required for the levels and for the evaluation process (which is also a thing people don't seem to take into account.

It's only harsh if you don't understand what this type of game is
It's like nothing else that exists.
It's bliss! It's nostalgia. It's wholesome. Can't wait to play it. Getting it tomorrow
The game would be perfect if it was open world and more pictures
zoroark MASTER
It would just be to much work and would also mean less areas since they’ll have to work more than twice as much on other areas
Also the unique interaction wouldn’t be possible if it was open world.
It’s just not a good idea and would gave us less content and less lively Pokémon interaction.
In the original you can make Pokémon evolve and do things, this was just taking pics tbh. It’s a lot prettier but much less interactive.
Switch cartridge fits 32 gb. Sword and shield only used 9.5. There’s plenty of space.
Wish it was in my budget but don’t think it is
How does it hold up on the handheld?
Great so far!
it's amazing, and definitely bounds and leaps better than anything pokemon we have had in a while, my only disappointment would really be that you can't make pokemon evolve like the original, was looking forward to that... but still, pretty good game.

Wait... there is no way to interact and evolve the pokemon! aww that was one of the good parts!
Did he say that?

@@tbpbTB2010 man, gonna get my free poster and refund my preorder and just watch it on TH-cam lol
damn just beat the game and everytime i saw a magikarp i threw everything at it trying to get it to evolve lol
Interaction yes "forcing" an evolution no
Didnt realize pedobear is a pokemon haha
Buy it from Walmart in store and get it for 49.99$ I totally think its worth 50$
I think the graphics are great but I think they could still be a little less plastic looking
It may not go one sale being a pokemon game. Also it looks like Walmart in the USA in store is selling it for 50$ they seem to seem all switch games at 50$ tho, at least in North west louisiana for the last year
i hope they add DLC of the first island v:
and put better music. the current one makes me sleepy 🤣
I will never understand how this gameplay is entertaining, but wow this game looks incredible.
Glad other people are enjoying it, and if I can ever get a super cheap copy, maybe it’ll win me over
Honestly, it's the type of gameplay you'll never realky understand unless you try it... I bought the game to suppirt pokemon spin-offs (that aren't mobile games) and still had my doubts.
Absolutely no regrets.
@@dallinmoody1297 its completely different if just watch it or play it yourselve
@@FS-gl9cg i think you missed the part where I said ansolutely no regrets.
I did play it... which is why i said It haas to be experianced to be inderstood
Am I the only one who thinks they could of made a more interesting camera sound, like seriously, sounds just like my iPhone, could of made a huge difference
70$ for a screen shot sim ... the n64 game was 40$ back in the day
$40 in 1999 are worth $64.63 in 2021
@@RobsPixelworld To be Fair it be literally impossible to find an original copy of Nintendo 64 Pokémon snap for anything less than 100 bucks where I live currently but I feel the gameplay doesn’t really provide all that much in terms of value
While i was watching, i had feeling that you didn’t want to hurt sensitive fanbase with your actual honest opinion
