  • It takes speed, stamina and livestock savvy to be the best in the country when it comes to auctioning cattle. Bailey Ballou is a repeat winner at the annual event taking place, this year in Turlock, California. But also in the competition is a young man with the rhythm of a rap superstar, 18 year old Blaine Lotz.

‘’Scientific societies are as yet in their infancy… It is to be expected that advances in physiology and psychology will give governments much more control over individual mentality than they now have even in totalitarian countries. Diet, injections(vaccines) and injunctions will combine, from very early age, to produce the sort of character and the sort of beliefs that the authorities consider desirable, and any serious criticism of the powers that be will become psychologically impossible...’’ - Bertrand Russell, 1953

Back in the 1960's in our town, there were two brothers who'd auction off the cattle. They'd each take turns, Ron for 45 minutes and then Ray for 45 minutes. Back and forth and so on and so forth until every cow was auctioned off. Over the radio you'd hear the radio guy talking about the auction and in the background, you'd hear one of the brothers auctioneering.

No, it's mainly just tongue rolls or mouth noises to help keep their voice in a steady rhythm. They're talking extremely fast so to not stumble or stammer out of rhythm, they do it to help or to be a "song" of sorts.

    • @2233golf2

Well actually the auctioneers often say things like (example) :120 here-give 10 more...I got 130-really good cattle-gottta give more....140-you gonna give 140...?
And of course they fill the gaps with their singing tunes...

I stumbled on a weird part of youtube but I think it has something to do with pace. Since theres an awful lot of things being sold at auctions, it would make sense if you had to be fast. You don't want to spend too long selling something when you have about 100 more items to sell. That and I also think that speaking fast makes people react fast. Sometimes without thinking too. So better chance to sell something I suppose

They talk so fast because they have they have several hundred head of livestock to sell each sale day. The sale does stop and continue the next day, so they have to keep the pace up. Each lot should only take a few seconds to reach maximum bid. This is where your auctioneers talent and experience come into play.
