Embark on a captivating journey through the lesser-explored areas of Opelousas, Louisiana, as our dash cam captures the raw and unfiltered realities of the city's run-down neighborhoods. Join us for an immersive exploration of the hoods in the South, where we shed light on the challenges and stories that shape these communities.
    Population is 15,786 (2020 census).
    * Opelousas-Eunice Micropolitan Statistical Area: This is the smaller metropolitan area with Opelousas as the principal city. According to the most recent estimates from the US Census Bureau (2020), the population of this MSA is 80,808.
    * Lafayette-Opelousas-Morgan City Combined Statistical Area: This is a larger combined statistical area that includes several smaller MSAs, including Opelousas-Eunice. As of 2020, the estimated population of this CSA is 537,947.
    Opelousas, Louisiana, is a charming city with a rich and complex history. Located in St. Landry Parish, it holds the title of the third oldest city in Louisiana. Founded in 1720, Opelousas boasts a diverse cultural heritage influenced by French, Spanish, and African American communities. It played a significant role in the Civil War and witnessed one of the Reconstruction era's bloodiest massacres, the Opelousas Massacre of 1868. Despite this dark chapter, the city has persevered and today celebrates its unique blend of cultures through its architecture, cuisine, and festivals.
    Crime:
    * Overall crime rate: 259.87% higher than the national average (AreaVibes, 2023)
    * Violent crime rate: 140% higher than the national average (NeighborhoodScout, 2023)
    * Property crime rate: 216.3% higher than the national average (AreaVibes, 2023)
    * Daily crimes: 3.54 on average, including 0.92 violent incidents and 2.62 property-related offenses (AreaVibes, 2023)
    It's important to note that these are city-wide averages, and crime rates can vary significantly within different neighborhoods. While some areas might be relatively safe, others might have higher crime rates.
    Here are some resources for checking crime statistics in specific areas of Opelousas:
    * City of Opelousas Police Department: www.opelousaspd.com/
    * Louisiana State Police: www.lsp.org/
    * AreaVibes: www.areavibes.com/opelousas-l...
    *NeighborhoodScout: www.neighborhoodscout.com/la/...
    * Only in Your State: www.onlyinyourstate.com/louis...
    Despite the higher crime rate, Opelousas still offers a vibrant atmosphere and rich cultural experiences. However, it's important to be aware of the crime risks and take appropriate precautions before visiting or moving to the city.

    I'm from Opelousas and moved away in 1982. It's so much crime because there's nothing to do. No jobs in a town with only a super Walmart to shop for clothes. So sad and glad my family and I left.

    Nicely done. I like how you gave the Intro, then the rest was just viewing. It might be Dangerous, but better than I lot I've seen. Nobody hanging out on the street corners, no trash, some decent houses.. Thank you for a job well done.😀😃😄👍👍👍

    My kids are in Cecilia schools and they lost to Opelousas in the championship game. Despite being on the losing end, I think it’s horrible that they were stripped of their championship title, trophy and the whole season. They won that game with passion.
    As for Opelousas itself, I don’t go there anymore because of the crime. There are records I need to get from the courthouse (I’m a genealogist) but I can’t get around there without a GPS and I am not chancing getting lost in that town

      @@Mr_interstate_skater I actually went to 2020 yesterday to get my tire changed. I had a bad experience in a courtroom (twice) and I think it’s easier to blame the crime than to admit that I have PTSD from it. Going through the historic parts yesterday was so beautiful and I was shocked at how old some homes were and how they are still in great condition

    I hate the way ppl use statistics to explain negative issues but I also get that it helps when it comes to figuring out resources. But to claim a town that’s 5x smaller than its state’s biggest city off of a 1000 to 1 ratio to be more dangerous than a multi- metropolitan area is wild. Even tho if u look at the number of totals will show a different picture, I feel statistics like this should be better explain to the ones that don’t know any better along with doing statistics including the Metropolitans as a whole. A lot of times the crime ratio don’t really reflect the whole truth cause most metropolitans try to keep the most dangerous and often low income secluded to the slums that often get swept under rug for revenue purposes. But setting that same ratio factor on a smaller city that don’t have the luxury of separating from the statistics or population to even the numbers out, is not gonna fix the overall narrative.

    Opelousas isn’t that bad, it’s got a very small population so the crime statistics look a lot worse than reality. But the taxes in that town? Highest in the state and they don’t fix them fkd up roads. Poorly ran city politically. Go 10 minutes up the interstate to carencro and it’s like a whole new state compared to op. Still got love for my hometown though, best food in the world and the people are mostly really friendly.

    Most small towns in the south are violent. No jobs, drugs, and guns make for violence. Opelousas is the third oldest city in the state. Everything is under lock and key. Black-on-black crime is rampant in Opelousas. I live in Opelousas so I know.

    Might be why I'm not afraid of much... I sachet around New Orleans and the swamp alone at night when I go not worried about much.
