Erwin Rommel: The Desert Fox

  • Erwin Rommel is by far the most famous General of the Second World War, yet not much is actually known of him in details. What was his life like before the war? What did he think of Hitler? Did he plan to overthrow Hitler? There's a lot to know, and he lived a very interesting life. My first full length biography video, enjoy!

He was really called The Desert Fox for his rugged good looks.
In fact, they say the real reason that Churchill was so rabid for war with Germany was that Rommel had turned down Churchill's advances at a Christmas party in 1929.

Rommel's book is titled "Attacks" in english. And it is still one of the best small unit infantry tactics books out there even with the advances in warfighting tech. It's also a great read if you're not in need of tactical theory training as unlike most tactics text books each tactical lesson is preceded by rommel's account of the engagment in the 1st world war that he learned the lesson in. Which makes it much less dry than any US Army or Marine doctrine book.

    • @EvilHomer101

It is also still on the USMC commandant's reading list under the Company Grade officer section but is very useful for squad leaders and even fireteam leaders

Probably the best bio vid on Rommel. For a man that likes to joke with his men he always appears stern. Of course i never knew him. However, i have worked with men who served under him. The respect they had for his bravery, knowledge and leadership has been universal. Unlike many of our leaders who left troops behind like MacArthur, he seems the type who'd never do this.

I think Rommel started to lose it after the Africa campaign. How tf did he expect peace to be made with the western allies?? Germany was sending peace proposals at a time when things were advantageous for both parties, by 1944 the writing was on the wall, the allies would never have accepted peace then if they didn’t accept it in 1940. These pie in the sky idealists like Jünger and Rommel either didn’t know the geo politics correctly or were delusional. The allies would never have made peace and shut down peace talks on every occasion. They were however brilliant soldiers but I have to side with big A on this one.
Also have you read David Irving’s book on Rommel? His interpretation is Rommel knew virtually nothing of the plot but his assigned sub commander was heavily involved, he blamed Rommel at his trial to shift the blame. Rommel was in some meetings but not to talking about any serious plotting just ideas and apparently he felt Germany’s only hope was trusting in uncle A. big dog…..
Rommel took blame to protect his family and his supposed friends. However perhaps Irving’s interpretation is wrong. Either way this was a cracking video!

    • @ZoomerHistorian
      @ZoomerHistorian  ปีที่แล้ว +11

Yeah from my understanding he had no involvement with the murder at all, or even knew about it. But he was so deeply involved in the rest that it was by definition treason sadly, even though I don’t think he hated Hitler or was being malicious, he just cared about the German people and got wrapped up in it. Between a rock and a hard place!

Two comments I’d like to make. First, although Rommel hated being in charge of Hitler’s HQ protection battalion, he nevertheless learned tremendously about the effectiveness of modern mechanized manoeuvre warfare, which he put to good use when he was next put in command of Seventh Panzer. Secondly, by the time Rommel arrived in Africa, the Enigma decrypts the British were receiving were yielding spectacular dividends. Every unit in the Africa Corps, their strengths, dispositions, supply issues and morale, were known to the British high command. They were confident they could anticipate any attack, simply because orders would be sent telling Rommel when the time was right. As it was, initially, they knew Rommel was ordered to take a defensive posture and build up his forces. It therefore came as a major surprise when Rommel seized the opportunity and simply attacked on his own initiative. Something he repeatedly did throughout the North African campaign. Unfortunately for Rommel, Hitler asked for a detailed attack plan for his El Alamein offensive, which Montgomery read with great interest.

Rommel is a Beast. I have admired him since I was a preteen. God Bless Rommel.

On that intro, von Witzleben, Infantry guy, also met the Rommel end and should be remembered like him.
    Video?

little bit of a trivia question here i only found out recent but i did read or see documented video that Rommel died in action believing that for some years, but in fact died taking his own life instead of a state execution because of high treason (Op. Valkyrie). When, specifically year, was the facts of his death declassified if anyone who knows is so kind to answer? thank you

    His name literally sounds militaristic.

Zhukov is probably a lot more popular in Eastern European countries than Rommel.
