Firstly, most hunting is SA is on Private farms and not in reserves as in Tanzania or Botswana. So its private property. In South Africa, there is a low intensity war against farmers, originating in criminality but certainly encouraged by many black politicians, often overtly. Criminal gangs target farmers for murder due to their Isolation and high value of vehicles, weapons and such things needed for farming. Most farmers carry pistols, and probably have some combat type arms to protect themselves. As any good firearm owners knows, its better to always carry it and not need it. Thus, it has nothing to do with the hunting at all, but rather with Self defence in and around him moving through transitional spaces such as his gates or driving off his property. Many criminals set fire to generators or water pumps at night to lure farmers out of their houses. SA is a case where there is no Second Amendment, and Firearm Ownership is heavily regulated, yet the people have seen the value and many many law abiding people walk around armed because the threats of violence are real.
