  • From my old Army days, the Be All You Can Be Soldier. I liked this one... the 'we do more before 9am than most people do in a day' one. Ehhh nostalgia...

I think this is the most memorable of all the "Be all you can be" ads. The phrase "We do more before 9 am than most people do all day" is a staple phrase of veterans all over the land. We use it a lot at the US Postal Service, I can tell you.

When wake up call is 04:30, being in place at 04:45, PT at 05:00, morning chow at 06:00, going back to the barracks to clean the sleeping area, clean yourself, put on brown t-shirt, green wool socks, BDU's with cap, and black boots shined so clear it can be seen from Google Satellite, get in line for the days training which was 98% outside at Ft. @Michela Thompson Amazing ...I noticed right before I got out of the army in 1985 that I would tie my boots in the morning without even looking at them due to waking up at 0430 in boot camp ... we were not allowed to put on the lights until 0500 and ultimately I had learned to put on my boots and tie them and tighten them without ever looking at them because I was in the dark in basic....this was way before speed tightening boots where the first 3 loop holes were pulled out...

This was the commercial that got me. Joined in 1985, plan to retire next year. It's been so much fun. I was a tank turret mechanic driving around in tanks, then an infantryman in the 82nd Airborne, a ranger and pathfinder, a helicopter pilot, counterintelligence special agent, and cyber warfare officer. It truly was an opportunity to be all i could be. Maybe i'm bias but this, by far, was the best slogan. So disappointed when they came up with an Army of one. Just didn't send the right message. I enjoyed being an NCO more than I ever did being an officer....except on pay day! 😁

I’d say it’s still seen by a lot of people as a place for ignorant losers. I played sports and joined the army and I had a friend say to me who also played sports so you’re joining the army, followed by yea kind of a don’t ask don’t tell type thing. He was trying to say don’t join. I’m still in my first contract but am not sure if I want to re-enlist? Should I ?

Then ya had the guys with dreams of hot MPs riding with them in a RV through Europe

We had a tuba player in my Army Band who reenacted the final scene of this commercial while posted at the CQ desk one cold morning. As the 1SG entered the building for morning inspection and details this guy hoisted his mug of coffee and piped up like Potsie Webber, "Hey, First Sergeant! Good morning!" Top, without looking, blew past him and replied with "F*** off, Specialist!" By the way, this was the last commercial for the Army I saw before heading out to Jackson for BT in the summer of 1985. Be all you can be!
