No, Asmon is the secondary protagonist who pops up every once in a while to set the protagonist on the right path. We are the main protagonists and Blizzard devs are the antagonists who keep throwing problems at you until the final boss Bobby gets sick of their failures and kills them in front of the protagonist before strolling off to acquire more mercenaries to poorly develop his game.

"More buttons does not mean better game."

@@thanthongsupawiwattakut Oh yeah the SAM changes were not a great step in that direction. Despite pvp having less actions, it maintains complexity all the same, whereas removing kaiten was meh
I understand people who like pressing 123 instead of 111111 but I'm on the xiv combo boat. If a button can't justify its existence by enhancing the feel of the job it's in, then it should be tied into a button that can.
I would ofc have that be an option tho don't want to make people press 11111 filler, but it is not engaging gameplay for me, it's just more buttons to keybind.
I'm actually on the boat of trimming down ogcds for healers. Make them carefully decide when to gcd heal rather than rare if never. I don't necessarily think it should go quite as gcd heal sided as wow has it but I think ogcds are a bit too much throughput as it stands

PvP is more reactionary based because of randomness of players. PvE is static in nature and having a rotation to follow to push somebody's ability to perform a rotation, while also performing mechanics. PvP rotations are brain dead though and take a few minutes to memorize, compared to any actual practice needed, which is only saved by the randomness thrown at you because you are fighting players in a flexible environment.

Classes losing flavour in gameplay is an issue that unfortunately doesn't get talked about a lot. A couple long time Rogue friends of mine quit in Shadowlands because Rogue in PvP is barely punishing anymore when you screw up. Stuff such as stealth shield, subterfuge, frequent access to dance, close to no energy management (symbols of death, energy regen on dance and free cheap shot every dance) and not needing to get to 5 combo points because of echoing reprimand were some of the final drops in the bucket of issues they had. Personally, I played Paladin the most, and I've gotten to the point with my Paladin where I almost deleted it recently due to how dysfunctional and flavorless the class became.

    • @buddhsie
      @buddhsie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

This is true, it's part of the reason I stopped playing FFXIV back at Stormblood release. I played all through 1.1x to there, and in the end it just got to me too much. Since then they've continued to remove any class identity and uniqueness, basically now you have templates of classes where the only difference is the colour of flashy lights. I miss the days where gear had more than 3 different stats, and you could put some thought into building your character and playing a certain way. I definitely understand this might work for some people but not me.

    • @autoscrollclips
      @autoscrollclips 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

true, I felt the same way with rogue so i quit to ffxiv, but ffxiv felt the same way. One thing I disliked about ffxiv was the way there was no difficulty or creativeness in your class during a boss fight. I did some speed kills on extreme content, cleared savage and an ultimate, it all felt bland. Now with bard having gotten fucked with 2 minutes of 1 button clicks and 1 other button whenever it glows and BM not being rewarding enough I quit raiding and just sub whenever i feel nostalgic same thing as in WoW.

@@buddhsie To go off of this, and to emphasise my point about Paladin in WoW being dysfunctional, it's not just about losing flavour, it's also about just pure bad gameplay. I started playing 14 during Shadowbringers, and I mained Gunbreaker. I really enjoyed it despite Continuity restricting your ability to move the boss around or double weave defensives. However, Endwalker made me drop it because I never ever wanted to main tank again due to adding Continuity to Burst Strike, which made it pretty much impossible to take on any tanking responsibilites.
And I would happily elaborate on my Paladin WoW example as well, but I don't want to write a PhD dissertation here.

I completely agree with asmon's take that even if you meet the lowest expectations of the players, the expectations just end up getting lower. I currently have oranges across the board for the current savage tier as a gunbreaker, and even I have to admit after we got enough gear to the point where I didn't need to be spamming my support skills like aurora or heart of conundrum, I just flat out stopped using the skills. Why? because people would survive whether I used it or not. Whether its the top 95% of players, or the absolute bottom of the barrel, players will only do what the game absolutely requires of them, and will slack out on anything it doesn't require, even if it's better.

Asmon brings up a good point, creative careers don't work like other careers because you are the most profitable when you aren't worrying about making a profit. Time efficiency and monetization aren't as important since most creative careers start as hobbies (and are often not seen as legitimate careers depending on your living/social environment) and, more often than not, trying to rush or push yourself has a tangible effect on your work that will have a negative impact on community enjoyment. It's the kind of job that works best when you don't treat it like a job... but instead treat it like a passion.

It would be interesting, but only if Chair can keep up with Asmon. "Even if we colab, and they get 1000 new followers, and I get 100, that's still 100 more followers. Colaberating with smaller content creators is still beneficial, it's not about the views, it's about getting your content out there."
I love this line of thinking, and it's a big show of how Asmon actually enjoys what he does. If he were as evil as a lot of people joke about, he wouldn't care less about bringing attention to people, he wouldn't care about the smaller creators, what he seems to care about most, at least in this video, is bringing out content for people to see, getting more videos of many differing styles out, which overall brings out something for every viewer.

I think if I was to take Misshapen serious for a sec, this is what would "summarize" it (I can't go through EVERY nuance): Kaiten (50% more potency on the next weaponskill) was a staple skill that pretty much defined the overall gameplay/rotation for SAM next to Midare, Higanbana (a fkin 1 minute lasting dot!) and gauge.
MNK was the hardest melee (for most at least) to play due to ALL rotation skills having a positional (reduced from all 6 down to 2), a strict 90 sec reopener window, hell bend on uptime due to greased lightning (I miss that effect T_T) wich was thrown away for some fkin cutscenes in SAVAGE CONTENT, so it was unique and required a certain amount of constant awareness etc like Black mage. Current Monk feels like a discount Ninja and its disgusting.
Ninja had a short sweat every minute phase and a little longer sweat every 2 minute phase, trick attack being the most prevelent skill in raiding ever (bro the memes...), because before dancer popped up, your DPS was measured the way DPS gets measured nowadays in Alliance Raids, aka no Ninja = no orange or higher, PERIOD! While everything inbetween was a no brainer so you had some major relaxation since Huton was EZ to keep up.
Lolgoon has animation lock and 3 positionals (wich is now the melee with the most positionals).
Reaper: if you can't play reaper, I have really bad news for you son... this is BY FAR the most well thought out melee if not overall DPS ever, it is insanely flexible, versatile and even has the highest ranged attack, short cast time means nothing when it comes with 300 potency attached to it if you get unlucky downtime. It is by far the most played melee, really easy to pick up and allows for a decently "high" ceiling in reopeners while not dropping INSANE amounts of damage if you play a more dumbed down rotation. I can't even express how good this thing is! the basic 123 rotation doesn't even have positionals!
Getting good at these unique things that harder classes have or all roles in general gave you the happy chemicals and you love it! Yes, even Heavensward TP you filthy casuals! Yes, I just went there, idgaf. MP still has the right to exist somehow.
Go and put ress on a 2 stack system with a 5 minute cooldown while you are at it, you have 2 healers and probably a red mage anyways.
Yoshi PP over here meanwhile is slowly taking away these things and tries to dumb down everything and meanwhile Black Mage is getting more and more good shit, while leaving an insanely high ceiling open for them but keeping the entry level far higher than ANY other class right now. (Yoshi P you dirty elitist, I see you.)
At some point this will alienate veteran players but instead of talking down to people, whine about x thing in x expansion or (god forbid) lend helpful non mentor advice, most take the ToS friendly approach and simply stfu when someones fucks up at the most basic rotation at max level and guess what, these are the same people that would have fucked up their basic rotation in any other expansion or ARR itself.
Shadow babies don't even know most of these things, since they joined around the time where E8S was either released or on farm in PF.
Don't get me wrong, its ok to make the game more accessible and reach a wider audience but don't even pretend for a second that this doesn't slowly smell like WotLK where they reach too far and appeal to people that do not play MMOs but for classes.
People do not play classes because of difficulty alone, it simply needs to be rewarding when you finally archieve something on harder classes.

    • @triplecastsleep1924
      @triplecastsleep1924 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Monk is an example of the streamlining being good though. Having that number of positionals meant many fights were just arbitrary fuck yous to MNK, take a look at monk compared to other melees at the time on E9S and remember that Monk had ~72% uptime on positional-nullifying buffs at the time. Greased lightning was also no difficult to build or to maintain, it was just arbitarily taken away from you on certain mechanics. These were systems that no amount of skill could overcome, you would just get randomly smacked in the face and your job would feel like shit for half a minute as you recovered.
Compared dropping Enochian on BLM to dropping greased lightning on MNK, not even the same ballpark.

At start, there was even something like aggro and mana management. The physical skill resouces TP (technical ponts) was partly annoying, but that was thanks to AoE skill of SOME classes were so expensive, that you just instantly ran out of TP, while others could just go on.
Instead of fixing things, Square just cut them away.
Aggro management "too hard"? Cut it.
Mana management "too hard"? Make it so easy you can pretty much just delete it, too.
TP management "too hard"? Cut it.
Balancing classes too hard? Just streamline them.
Balancing buffs/debuffs too hard? Cut them down.
And regarding content its even worse. When something is good, they just cut it anyway, because they don't know where to go with it. If something is not working, they screw around with it, just making it worse or barely pseudo fix it, while keeping the standard stuff on such a copy/paste level, that it becomes bad just by that.

      What are you talking about?
Aggro management was a largely vestigial mechanic even in SB, with the majority of the work being done by everyone except for the tank.
Mana management was something that was automatically handled by doing your rotation right, something that's still the case.
TP was a vestigial mechanic left over from 1.X which you could play around - either it didn't matter or you ran out and ate shit.
I genuinely have no idea what you're referring to when it comes to balancing and content.

This new monk is just so boring. Burst windows don't feel like burst windows, it feels like basic combos slightly out of order. They took away 4 positionals which gave the job something to do since the job is relatively braindead without them. On top of that we lost 2 ogcds in favor of hitting 1 we already had like 1 extra time during burst windows. New monk attracted a few new people but alienated a lot of old monk mains and made them quit the job. I get why positionals had to go, there is so much forced/restricted movement in this savage teir but it made the job so simple it's boring.

I was a WoW player that would get about mid-way through raids on mythic and I generally prefer the simple 3-button specs like Frost Mage. The reason is that it meant that I could spend less time managing my class and more time interacting with the fight. I could pick up responsibilities like callouts, soaks, CC, special areas, etc that nobody else wanted to or felt comofortable doing. It also meant that the skills required to do great DPS were different. Aside from cooldowns, one of the biggest ways you optimised a Frost Mage was by cheesing mechanics (with blink, ice block, alter time, etc) and planning your blinks for general movement. The ideal Frost Mage is one that does less base DPS than the other classes but makes up for it (if you're skilled enough) by having more up-time with full DPS, coming out about the same overall.
Basically, making a class's rotation easier doesn't mean you need to make it weaker. It just means you need to find some other way to put challenge into it. Other classes do this by having burst damage windows. You do awful DPS but if you set up and execute your burst windows well (and accounting for how the fight affects it), you catch back up. It gives more variety and flavour.

Here's a hot take - you don't need to learn your rotation. What you do need is to learn your skills and how to use them, apply some thought and craft your own rotation. At some point you'll get to something resembling optimal rotation from guides. In fact, most players (myself included) don't go to savage and extremes so they don't ever need to use some shb smn 120 sec opener dwnld no sms and reg. On the opposite side, I've seen some players, who tried their best to repeat what they saw in some guide, yet they failed miserably, not because they made mistakes, but because they knew not what they were doing while focusing on strict button order.
As for the button bloat - you do realise that FF 14 need to be optimised for controllers, so skill trimming is inevitable. At the same time removing hissatsu:kaiten is not a good design decision, as it's a signature skill for SAM. But kaiten was even more important for SAM, because it was an element of control, as you needed to have 25 gauge for every cast. It was rewarding skill and awareness, yet wasn't too punishing in normal content. So it's not about the skill trimming, rather it's about what skills are getting expunged.
Once again all of the above is valid for normal (95% of the game) content, not extremes and savages.
Also burger king bois getting upset about a 3 min timeloss while power grinding for a mentor mount on a selfish DPS classes attacking newer players for just playing are no authority to listen to.

Unless you're going into like, savage content, you're not gonna need to have a guide tell you the exact rotation to use. If you're figuring out what your abilities do (read your tooltips, watch a guide or two if it makes you feel better, ask a knowledgeable friend if you have one) you will get something that vaguely resembles a rotation.
A lot of people don't do this, though, and that's where problems start to happen. That, and the game isn't great at teaching certain mechanics and early dungeons don't help develop good habits.

    • @SSCamaro
      @SSCamaro 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree for everything other than current Extreme/Savage content (and, of course, Ultimates). Optimal rotations are mostly designed to maximize raid DPS, not necessarily personal, with powerful skills and abilities grouped up at even minute marks to give/receive raid buffs. That being said, even in solo content, looking at a rotation guide or information source (The Balance discord server, or Wesk Alber on TH-cam) can help you put together your own rotation and reduce confusion when learning a new job. With jobs you pick up at level 50+, trying to figure out a truckload of tooltips that was just dumped in your lap can be overwhelming.

As for mechanics, the newest raid in Wow we have as an example lots of people ignoring the necrolords in wing 2 of the raid finder (sepulcher of the first ones) instead tunneled the bosses and caused a wipe , 2 stacks of determination later we barely got through it (unnecessary)
Following mechanics in wow or FFXIV will save you and your party members as you already know !!!
But so far Endwalker has a brilliant story it’s like opposite direction of what Blizzard did with shadowlands !!!

That’s why you can’t compare yourself to others to feel special. Feel special for how what you have makes you feel as if no one else existed.
I ran potd with some friends on my SMN. At the end of the very last floor we almost wiped but I clutch rezzed and saved the run. The black and red Pegasus mount dropped and I got it. Is it a common mount? Sure. But this one is mine and it has a special place in my heart because I got it with friends. It has its own story behind it.
Maybe try to look at your own collectibles in a similar way and they’ll feel special regardless if everyone else has it.

if they want to add more buttons, then they have to either remove or change old ones or make new buttons that actually feel like a significant power increase.
i dont want 10 more buttons to press to do the same damage as before, thats just not fun in most cases.
One case where more buttons would be better is current summoner, you summon bahamut/phoenix, then you do your 2 attacks related to them and then spam ruin until bahamut/phoenix is gone, then you summon ifrit/garuda/titan, spam 1 button 2-4 times, then you summon the next 2 and spam the same button again until bahamut/phoenix is back and the cycle repeats, yeah you have fester but thats not up very often, you do 2 fester then wait 90 years until you can do it again, so for summoner it would make gameplay more fun if there were more buttons

@@Blinkx47 I get their philosophy, which is to expand the base as much as you can (blue ocean strategy) while making savage content and ultimate content the only difficult content. This strategy is a bit risky because it can cause burnout or be a massive success (i.e. Nintendo with the Wii).
For now, this philosophy is working for Square. Square's flagships are some of the most famous JRPGS out there. I personally know many people who are JRPG fans but are afraid to try FFXIV because it is an MMO, which means it carries the baggage of MMOs (toxicity, need to socialize, anxiety, etc). Even if FFXIV in-game isn't as toxic, FFXIV social media on the other hand is bad. The simplification and eventually making the game soloable with NPCS is Square's attempt in attracting such people. The issue isn't as bad as the video puts it out, though concerning, and I am optimistic that the button bloat problem is to ensure the longevity of the game, as Yoshi P stated he would like the game going for a least another 10 years or so.
I do hope the team takes notes from the community and reacts accordingly, which they have demonstrated that they do, especially the memes. Do remember that they do triage a lot and have to prioritize certain things and they don't exactly tell you if they heard you or not until they can confirm something can be or cannot be done within a reasonable time.

Nah, mostly people regurgitating things without thinking by themselves. It's a case per case scenario, I do not agree on removing SAM's Kaiten, however their position was not that they will do it in order to dumb down a job but for rebalance(some skills will now have a 100% crit chance to avoid fluctuation based on RNG), since SAM players are overall one of the most if not the most vocal about changes on their job its not a surprise(early EW is a perfect example with SAM players whining about not being the top dps job). The same people talking about this issue are the ones using other jobs with major changes such as SMN to push the idea that it has been dumbed down. It hasn't been the case for many jobs and some jobs are at their best and hardest, such as DRK.

Regarding class/job changes, what I want is for glaring issues to be fixed and for the job to receive improvements where it makes sense. What I don't want is for a class/job to become artificially easier to play, which I think a lot of people would agree with, making the SAM and NIN changes in FF a bit confusing. It will always feel good to string together a chain of abilities to deliver a big chunk of damage, so having that process become simplified naturally makes people who practiced the chain a bit upset.
Especially when the devs are talking about cracking down on button-bloat and still have AST keep Undraw... which is a useless skill. Literally the best advice for how to use it is "remove it from your hotbar, you don't need it", as it just throws away your drawn card. Why THAT is still in the game, but Hissatsu: Kaiten gets removed... is confusing.

I disagree. A class/spec being harder to play doesn't necessarily mean the class/spec needs to have a "reward" in the form of higher output.
The reward can be inherent to the class. Like how I just like the theme of the class or like how the abilities flow.
I don't care what the meters look like. The boss dies anyways. Being on par with everyone else despite you needing to work harder is just a fact of life. Not all aspects of life are fair.

9:40 it's not more buttons for the sake of more buttons, it's that some players ( me included ) like combo complexity of pressing 5 buttons to pull off an awesome combo while dodging the boss.
Problem is that there should be a balance between button bloat and button scarcity.
    The latter is currently happening.
They're literally over simplifying jobs for the sake of oversimplification, which is the opposite.
Like chair is saying, there are more complicated and less complicated jobs, not every job is for everyone.
It should stay that way, making harder jobs simpler just alienates the "complicated job" players, it doesn't help anyone tbh.

they should add 'this or that' type skill paths thats easy to hotswap, hell with they flexability of hotkey bindings be able to swap between lets say a mage can go down either a fire/water path or earth/wind path, well it would be cool to be able to switch from fire/water to earth/wind moves through a simple key bind kinda like diablo 3's companions (cant think of a better example right now), the job/class has all 4 attributed skills/attack types but lets say that F/W is more attack based with E/W being more defensive based.
this rudamentary idea would give the jobs more flexability within their roles as well as being user friendly, whilst retaining a skill ceilings.
I imagine having two forms of Dragoon, a Sky Emperor (lotsa air time), or Kings Lance (more lateral movement) with a skill like Dragon Driver (you know that cool attack that typically rogues have where they slash dash through ad's up to 4x?) this would mean that Sky Emperor retains that floor tank meme status but even more so with a more Mario feel, with Kings Lance being a more grounded yet faster and precise giving it that Sonic type feel.
hell this could be a sub job swap type thing where it can be limited in dungeons/raids where at the start of each encounter or room before the first combat of each you are free to hotswap until that first engagement locking you into that style until the next room...
Dragoon's my main but think of the possibilities.

  • @neek01

This is exactly the reason why games like Blade and Soul started dying (aside from the huge FPS and ping issues cus unoptimized game). The game had easy classes but it also had classes with an insanely high skill cap which were quite brutal. Every class in the game had 2 specs, easy/low dps and harder/high dps. Back then if you mastered the Wind KFM combos you could literally do double damage compared to those who sucked at it (and around 10-20% more dps than the 2nd best class) but it literally took years to become really good at it. After a while though they started "optimizing" every class for newer players and every class got dumbed down into brain damage levels, at one point you only had to activate your buffs and hold a single "combo" button because it wasn't worth it to actually learn the actual class anymore.
