Please! It's bad enough that American pronunciation got rid of yet another 'L', making English spelling even more arcane (and thus harder for foreign speakers) than it was before. The word is 'soldering'. And some (native) speakers even pronounce it that way.

You are a truly remarkable woman. Here, in the UK, we have a Hi-Fi retailer, called Richer Sounds. They have bought brand names of several makers, including Cambridge Audio. They refuse to supply genuine parts or service manuals and insist that all repairs are done by them. I'm currently awaiting a court hearing as it's against UK law (Consumer Rights Act 2014). Very pleased with you and all that you do.

furzkram Data is stored in what is called NVRAM (or non-volatile RAM (which means that if that power fails, the data remains on the chip)). Jessa, in this video just showed you that the phone could be repaired, so no data recovery was necessary.
When there is too much damage, then more of the support chips are removed, until data can be recovered from the NVRAM and placed onto a USB stick.

I used to run a computer repair service (until I fell ill 10 years ago). I was always amazed at the level of trust people placed in my hands when repairing their computers. I handled their photos, finances, and all sorts of other very personal data. They trusted me with their passwords and the like.
I was also conscious of my role in data protection. What would I do if I came across evidence of illegal activities? What liability could that expose me to? These are all very sensitive issues here in the UK. So, trust runs in both directions. My customers have to trust me with their data, and I have to trust that their computers were not used for illegal activities. (Perhaps the closest I came to danger in this regard was when asked to help fix a computer in a massage parlour! - I politely declined).
I agree with your comments about having a certifying authority. I feel that does nothing to help unless that authority runs periodic, random inspections of your work along with other monitoring measures - and even then it is impossible to guarantee anything. Such certifying activities can themselves be corrupted into protection rackets.
As a matter of principle, I believe the world runs on trust. Ultimately, every business runs on trust. There is no way to work otherwise. To eliminate trust, you would have to have all business activities double, triple, quadruple..to infinite checks, increasing costs to infinity! It makes no sense.
I often hear politicians and public figures calling for law changes to ensure some horrific thing, "can never happen again". Guess what! They happen again! Law cannot prevent recurrence. If it did, why do we need prisons?
So, to return to my start point. Thank you for running an ethical, trustworthy business. Thank you for upholding the standards we require from our professionals. All this comes from who you are, not from external authorities.

Jessa, regarding data recovery, when you fix the phone and that phone is able to boot, the screen and touch is working, I guess you don't really need to go further to enter the pass code, as probably that phone will work anyway. So those who wan't maximum privacy could go to your shop and enter their pass code. I think only a small percentage of phones could have data corruption even if the screen and touch is working and the phone is able to boot.

Don't get me wrong i love what you do and this channel, but there are a lot of bad people with bad motivations out there, and if you can't guarantee somehow that you don't have the ability to steal someones data, then there at least needs to be a way to take legal recourse if someone does. Think about this, if 95% of everyone are good people, which is a pretty high majority, that still means that you have personally trained 20 bad people at your own business. Now multiply that by "thousands" as you said for other people out there that do what you do.

Preamble: Jessa, not ONE word of this is aimed at you, either directly OR indirectly, not even implied. Please don't think I am being rude - I've spoken to you on the phone - you're lovely, and very helpful and direct - much respect.
I've listened to Leo, Rene, Andy Ihnatko & Alex Lyndsay on _"MacBreak Weekly"_ for YEARS, weekly, and barely without fail. That's 2-3 hours per week, EVERY week, of VERY detailed, VERY intelligent debate and discussion from these four gentlemen *(of note - they're each EASILY over 45, IE, the "common sense circuits" are well established and fully functioning by now)* PLUS any guests Leo invites, any of whom have been Apple journalists for DECADES, long before anyone here will likely remember (looking at you, Mr Rossman, but not you alone.) Their calm, balanced, NON ranting and adult discussion in INCREDIBLY long discussions (often the same discussions will span many *months*) have made them my DE-FACTO, verifiable, rock solid, PROVEN long-term source of Apple news, against which I measure ALL other so-called "professionals" or - quote "journalists" - many of whom were unborn or in nappies when these people began their careers. I'll listen to the aforementioned ABOVE ANYONE, period, since they are consistent, act like CIVIL adults (which they are) and yet manage to have heated debates and disagreements WHILST NOT offending one another OR apportioning blame, NOR cursing out companies or picking ad-hom "rationale" to add weight to their arguments. In short, they are adults who ACT like them.
It's EASY to become unhinged and irrational, "fighting for the underdog" - fair enough - BUT Apple can't consistently offer a GUARANTEED board-level repair service to EVERY SINGLE person who hasn't had the wherewithall or foresight (or even the knowledge) to know that they needed Apple cloud backup service to mitigate "disasters" in the digital domain. Louis goes off on regular rants - many of his points hold water - but when he's childish & abusive, and generally starts behaving like a silly kid, and cursing and yadda yadda and all this "anti-Apple" crap, my mind switches off; he does himself no favours, on a regular basis.
I wonder if it may serve these repair people, who do an AMAZING job, a good service if they were to sign NDA's and be given a tour and/or briefing of VERY detailed where/how/why internals of how and why Apple does AND doesn't do what they do and don't do, before speaking on a subject from a limited "outside perspective", with all and complete respect to you repair guys. Apple are NOT "evil" and it is NOT intentional malice, I am convinced of that much. The forum staff MAY be heavy handed or misguided, BUT their employer PAYS them to do what they are asked to, and the employer must have a reason to do so - and regardless of WHY Apple asks them to remove direct recommendations to individual, SPECIFIC engineers such as Jessa and Louis, it's APPLE'S company, they own the forums, they make and support the product, and whether it's hard to swallow or not, it's THEIR choice to decide how they choose to service or support users, as hard as that may be to accept.
Sometimes in life, there's just a time when you say "I hate it, I do not like it, it stinks in my view, but it's out of my control and I can't change it". All the TH-cam rants in the world are NOT going to affect Apple one iota - I am sure they don't arbitrarily choose to HURT independent repair shops, but their polices are THEIR POLICIES, and there's ALWAYS reason and rationale behind them, the revelation of which could compromise many aspects of their security mechanisms and/or customer data & faith in their services and products.
It's okay NOT to understand everything, is what I've learnt about life. I hope this came across with respect for you all. :)

"sign NDA's and be given a tour and/or briefing of VERY detailed where/how/why internals of how and why Apple does AND doesn't do what they do and don't do,"
Ha ha ha. In my experience, the level of control that Apple demands over its entire ecosystem is staggering, and reminiscent of a controlling boyfriend on Dr Phil.
Remember---Apple deleted my question recently simply asking "Where do I ask for clarification of Apple policy. They have always been 100% non responsive to any diplomatic inquiry that I've made regarding interpreting their policies.

    • @unlokia
      @unlokia 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@JessaJones Maybe so, BUT lest we forget, it's THEIR ecosystem and THEIR design, and no one is held to gunpoint and forced to invest in their tech, and if you invest in an Apple product, without knowing this, they can't be blamed for a lack of pre-purchase research. Apple are about creating and selling (very well, and with deep integrity) an experience from beginning to end. Period. If someone wants to come to you and have their phone repaired, of course that's between you and them, but crucially not between _Apple_ , you and them - that's totally detached from Apple, and up to the customer - *BUT CRUCIALLY - not approved or sanctioned by Apple, nope, not even a verbal recommendation, and you know what? Good for Apple for having some spine*

This is why data encryption for apple products doesn't make sense, hackers will get it off a healthy phone using software anyway.
A dead phone has to be repaired for access to occur, the costumer is usually the one holding the dead phone with ID wanting their data, repairing the phone isn't in apple interest as they want a sale of a new phone, there is the problem if the data could be retrieve without such a process then people would buy a new phone and have their data moved to it without hesitation. Everyone would then be happy!
If the legality of data retrieval is still an issue have the customer sign a consent form. If a customer wants to encrypt data it should be an opt in option and told the consequences if the phone is ever damaged.

Make a national "hit the forums day" where these people who have uses services like yours post their experiences (without naming your company) and tells Apple to stop lying about data recovery. If enough people hit the forums at once then the moderators wont have enough time to delete all the posts before the message gets out.

@@mts982 I don't know how Apple does their charging/protection circuits, but it's quite ommon practice to cut the battery off completely if it has dropped below a certain voltage level (where charging might arguably be dangerous).
Sometimes such a battery can be revived by bypassing the protection circuitry and connecting a power supply (limiting the current to a really low level) directly to the unprotected battery terminals, in order to give it a little charge and raise the voltage above the cutoff limit - from that point on a normal charger could then be used (but I'd keep an extra close eye on it / take extra precautions while charging for a couple of cycles).

I could sorta see Apple's position on cloud backups if they offered that service for free (yes, I know it's relatively cheap and I use it). But for many, they have to pay a shit-ton for their phone then pay another shit-ton for cell/data service. People just get tired of paying, paying, paying. So their stance on no data recovery would stand a little more in favor if backup was a service included with the phone or part of your cell service. Then users would have no reason to bitch... but as long as it goes on as is.... Apple just look like turds. Lying turds!
