I trained my GSD from a pup. Today I allowed her to chase a bunny and she was having so much fun but then it darted towards the road. I yelled her recall command and she snapped back to me like it was life or death. I have never been so proud of my girl. In mid chase the commands got through. My girl is amazing.
Absolutely right about calmness. We need to train ourselves first! If my partner gets furious and aggressive to my Corso the dog starts doing it back. Scary. She's never done this to me, calm is crucial.
This is exactly how my dog behaves. I've been consistently "behavioring" and training him for about a year, but it was like a light went on in his head, and now he does this, and I trust and appreciate him so much more. I found Mike's book just today, and I am going to read and use it. Train your dogs, they're your most effective physical allies!
being someone on disability whose finances are tight i am really enjoying these informative videos, i have already taught my german shepherd to go to his bed and stay, so thank you so much i will have to get the ball out now, again thanks for the videos.
i am the person who is learning by lots of trials, and lots of errors to train 2 Anatolian mix LGD's.!...............................and THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for all the advice on your u tube videos.........i just plain do not have the time spend to train them like you would.......but from what i have learned from you......we are doing VERY WELL.....and getting better every day......my dogs are farm dogs that prefer to be outside.......and little by little they are learning to behave in my house, and take nice long leash walks with me!
Love your attitude, sense of humor, analogies; no nonsense, no bullshit same training with kids and dogs. Wish more people would take that to heart. Great content keep up the great work.
Love it! My wife is a dog trainer in Utah and has such a tough time getting clients to put the work in. Great approach in starting small and slowly increasing the difficulty. Thanks for the vid!
Thanks for the video and the info. We live in the country and have 4 dogs. Impulse control is a tough issue, especially with three of them. We'll try separating one and teaching the basics, then go from there. Thanks again.
Awesome stuff. And a natural behind the camera. Remember folks, the 3 D’s: Distance Duration Distraction Start small, and increase distance, duration, and distraction. Fan of the show and VE (Vigilance Elite). And, just submitted monthly donations. Have to support this awesome cause.
Great advice Mike. Takes time .. I got my two to drop side by side. WAIT. Role a ball a short distance in front. Schultz WAIT (good boy), Spike FETCH (yes). Then reverse roles. Speak to each dog. Baby steps.
"Wrapped around the axle". Used by my Dad for my entire youth describing other people or me losing emotional control. He was a USAF SAC aircraft commander. I have always assumed it originated as a military term. In the late 1990s, I drove my GTO (low ground clearance, duh) through a farm field full of farm detritus. I got back on the gravel road and there was lots of repetitive loud noise. I had quite a length of barbed wire wrapped around my driveshaft...that counts for axle. It was a bitch to get it off of there without wire cutters. Live and Learn. Brought to you by EDC Leatherman Multitools. 😎👍🏻🇺🇸
Amazing tips and tricks from the best! I can personally testify that all of this worked and produced a near perfectly acting dog at all times. This combined with genetics shape annext level dog.
I’ve done similar with a grocery store "real lemon" on a pole with a short rope for stock dogs. Then worked up to making them "walk up" when feeding. Cool stuff. Military working dogs are too cool.
I think the key to the nuance Mr. Ritland refers to is keeping it just voice inflection while not exuding any negative angry or aggressive energy? I'm trying to train a half pitbull half German Shepard need all the help I can get...
New rescue Cletus with us and working on some things- I'm able to set his meal down on his mat and without a single word he knows to sit and wait - we exchange a certain look now. He doesn't get to eat the chow until I say "ok" - more stuff we are working on. Cletus is a regular family dog so we just want to make sure we aren't pulled down the sidewalk (also improving and he will look back and focus on us) or having a totally checked out dog. He comes from violence and abuse and while harness isn't ideal, we are making gains on leash manners. It seems to work best for him and due to some events in his past we just kept the harness. If we had started as younger /puppy I would never get a harness. So takes more time to get that leash manners stuff squared away but we make progress each time. We got lucky he isn't reactive or dramatic seeing people and animals out and about . Isn't aggressive. Just anxiety and still in decompression stages of adoption. The anxiety we are tackling from 3 prong approach - meds as needed via vet, consistent exposure to the things that cause anxiety and learning what makes him at ease which is us being calm, consistent, and he actually likes his crate. For a rescue with some dark days in his past and being with us only around 5 weeks, we are proud of the progress. I would say the biggest thing is us staying chill and consistency. He is very smart and well mannered. It's amazing to me he innately knows how to protect his home. He only barks when appropriate- folks approaching house or yard etc. He patrols the house regularly. No one knows he is a pile of love goo and not aggressive. His bark, situational awareness and stance is deterrent enough for others risking our safety. Not sure how he knows that. Recent walk he and i were together and my husband was at work. An off leash dog charged us and I had my pepper spray, police baton and non challenging but protective stance. Turns out the loose dog was a silly goober but Cletus stood between me and that dog and calmly got through the event with tolerance but very aware and protective. I didn't teach that. I wouldn't know how to teach that. We just work on the super basics. So proud of him
They work man. Been using them on my Huskies. Its taking more time than average given my schedule, but I can get them to dually obey different commands in a EXTREMELY controlled environment. My male is a little "dopey" and takes him a minute to catch on though. Stay at it and your Rott will be a great dog.
Really enjoy the videos, Mike! Have an 18 month catahoula leopard dog, super food driven. Employed multiple facets of your training, works wonders! Thanks!
Thanks Mike very informative , I will use your techniques and practice with my boy Remington. Anticipate watching more of your videos . again thank you.
"Aim small, miss small."... Hahahaha...great quote from the movie "Patriot". (Mel Gisbon's character is in the woods asking his sons if they remember what he said about aiming while hunting(in this case humans(British redcoats who have Mel's oldest son and their older brother captive. In other words, he's saying-aim for center mass body shots, not head shots)). Gota love a good movie quote, well timed and used properly, and also and perhaps most importantly-cited.
So if I am looking for a good dog to be a companion and home protection dog, but don't want to spend $10k on an imported Belgian Malinois from Europe, where do I look for one? I'm not going to be doing any kind of SEAL team stuff, but I'd like to be able to sic and then disengage the dog if I need to. Are my expectations reasonable? Can I spend less than $2k on an American bred Belgian or Shepard and still train him to a higher level?
These tips are great! We lost our dog last year due to cancer but she was an extremely well behaved 100lb American Bulldog. When we replace her I'm signing up for your teamdog.pet site! Thanks for doing these videos! I enjoy your other work as well, Mike drop for example.
Hi, I have a border collie mix who will constantly bark when we stop throwing the ball at the beach or take it away. How do we teach him to stop barking while waiting or is it the same concept. He will wait but he will bark the entire time.
Love these videos. I've been trying to get my girlfriend and her kids to learn simple techniques with the dogs like not letting them dash out the back door when they open it to take a piss. 12 year old uses a baby voice to get the dogs to do what he wants and they seem to not only dislike it, but fear it. 16 year old can't do anything without being on her phone so dogs don't listen. In 5 minutes I got the dogs to sit and react to one hand movement before I throw a ball to play with them. Kids can't understand it and also like to narrate what they want the dogs to do instead of using a single word in a calm assertive voice.
Thank you Mike I’ve been watching your videos and listening to your podcasts for years now and find everything very informative! I see your videos to others and you are the only positive person about training the others say don’t do this don’t do that and don’t buy a certain dog . You say yes you can just by taking the time and train.
Mike, I keep my good friends dog for a week at a time when they go on vacation and the dog it a large Black female German Shepard from a line of imported German bred police dogs. She was sold to a civilian because she didn't have the "High" drive required for Police dog work. She is a "Medium" drive dog at best and she's 2 years old and has been "Fixed". She will destroy every ball I can find and was wondering if you can recommend a brand that you use because we all know how expensive "Dog" toys can be! It looks like in this video you are using the "Chuckit" brand ball, is that your prefered brand? I am thinking about getting a "rescue" Belgium Malanois as there are too many dogs that end up in rescue situations as they are too much for the owners to handle and I want to help save a dog that could be put down because of behavioral problems. Plus I know what these dogs sell for as my friends spent over 5K on their Black Shepard and BMs can go for 6 figures if you wanted to go that route. What's your opinion on adopting rescue dogs?
What about impulse for affection?? My dog is if someone sees her when on leash wants to go say hi and will pull. Same with walking in general. Catches a scent and will pull to it
Thanks for the great training video Mike! Your book and videos have been super helpful in training my first working class GSD pup who is high prey high drive. More than any other dog I’ve ever had! Did you count your fingers after you gave Arrow back that ball?
I realize this is off topic. But I saw a person bring up the warrior dogs. So I figure if they can do it I can take it and run with it in a different direction. And it'll just be like a free-for-all plan ADHD comment section. Anyways, do Warrior dogs lose hearing from being in combat and being exposed? What is the most common side effect on a canine as a result of multiple combat situations? Do they suffer from stresses or not?
How do you get the dog to drop the ball Mike? I had some dogs that I had to pry open their mouths to get the ball out as they refused to drop it. I tried giving them treats, and they still refused to drop the ball, they were so focused on keeping it in their mouths.
Good info. I have a yellow lab that will be 3 this January. He works well with retrieving, whistle commands.... and so on. BUT when we hunt and the gun goes off, he looses his shit! If done what I've thought to be the correct things but apparently not. He is a Very driven dog and that's speaking lightly. Can you respond back with some advice. Thanks from 8541 in Virginia
Thank you for the training tip Mike. 10:24 I can not hand my Border Collie a ball. She will not take it from my hand. I must throw the ball to her every time and then she takes it. I’m going to try this training technique with my collie. She tries to herd my granddaughters and I need that to stop. She has an extremely high drive when it comes to herding and she will bite the kids.
Hey Mike, will you train this on a lead as well? for the super beginner dog? Also for a overdramatic throw or kick of the ball or thing? What does the progression look like for you on this drill?
Mike I taught my dog not to touch the bone when I put the milk bone on the dog's nose and he would sit there and not touch it until I told him I timed it I didn't want to do it for any longer I kind of felt guilty but I did it for 60 seconds he didn't touch it I put it on his nose I said don't touch I turned around and did some paperwork for 60 seconds I said go ahead and he flipped it up and caught it that's what I taught the dog so I think I'm pretty good at teaching dogs, and he was a hyper dog that had a lot of anxiety I'm really good man I'm telling you you should train me to train your dogs I'm really good at it
that lack of control killed the best dog I ever had to date. Pitbull name Kaine. Great bloodline. Hit by a car at 7 months running out in the street after another dog, any other day this dog was highly trained. I had him trained for protection of my daughter. Could command him to go and guard my baby girl and he would follow her all over the yard and stay by her side until I called him off. FUcking great dog. Never wanted another after until now. Just purchased a Malinois being shipped to me in June, great bloodline. I plan to work hard on impulse control brother.
Where you get your mal from and what was the price range? I know they vary a ton I’m just trying to get some real life answers from people who have done it.
@@alaskayoung3413 hey brother. I ordered him from the same place that the military and police get dogs. EUROPE. His blood line goes back 120 years. They gave me a military discount so I paid with shipping $7k usd. He is 10 months now and a damn good pup. Mom was ordinance detection, dad was narcotics, training him for search and rescue. Damn good pup.
@@frankharper1280 Oh man that is a lot less than I was expecting. Thats exciting. I'm working with my dog now and learning all the training etc so in like 2 years I can be prepared to pay the big bucks and get a full on Mal like yours and be able to train it and just have us both have a successful path. Thanks for the reply!
Thanks again for the great context Mike! I'm curious, why are the dogs taught so many commands in another language (Dutch?). Noticed it's common in a lot of working dogs. Thanks!
I think…. But not 100% I think a lot of that is for police dogs or military so someone in English can control them or maybe distract them. Or a bad guy not saying stay or something.
I’m the fatty who can’t control myself from getting the peanut butter cups at Walmart. 🤦🏻♂️ 😂
real fatty gets the Cups With the Pieces inside
😂😂 you and me both!
I'm pretty sure if u can resist Reeses eggs during Easter ur going to hell or at least not to be trusted lol

Who ever you're training Arrow for is getting one hell of a dog. Love these videos
I am really enjoying these extra videos! Can’t say enough good things about team dog!! Keep bringing the great content.
agreed
Ya there good working on training my bird dog this helps alot
I like how you emphasize the handlers behavior. We are usually the cause of unwanted behaviors. I'm learning a lot watching your content. Thank you!

Very good advise. I have been a life long lab guy, until I met the GSD. They are better labs than most labs.
Awesome tips for training!! Thanks Mike. Please keep the videos rollin.

Love these videos they are great! Would love a walk through the warrior dog kennel and to see some of them!!

Appreciate the info. These are gold nuggets given to us for free. Much respect. 💪🇺🇸
I like your video! Why do you use Dutch commands like ‘blijf’ en ‘los’?
How do you socialize your dogs to vacuums, leaf blowers, etc.
Great videos. Hope to see some when you first start with a dog. Good work!
Mike, Just discovered you and your trainings. Great stuff. I'm hooked and will be following you as I work with my 1.5 yr old Rottie. Tnx's

Mike, great video...keep 'em coming.
Thanks for this vid! Turns out I wanted my dog to go too fast :-) Also fun to hear you saying commands in my native language (Dutch)!
Another academy award winning production man. Love your info and style of delivery ~.
Good stuff Mike. Thanks for sharing this content. Really enjoying it from cold as balls Northern Indiana
And good call on the addition of the microphone for better audio last couple videos. much appreciated.
How do you do this with someone jogging by or on a bike? You can't give them the jogger after they leave it do you just treat them after they go by.
Great tip Mr. Mike! Keep up the great work.
Peanut butter cups included wish you'd post regular dog content of training, working etc along with the mike drop podcast!
I don't even have a dog at the moment and want to join team dog.. the psychology and skill is very interesting
What is a good thing to use to mimic a squirrel or bunny?
"Aim small, miss small."...

There are videos out there showing you by using 2 balls you can get your dog to "out"..

Cool stuff. A very simple question but I'm assuming the ball is reward enough and no need incorporate a clicker to mark and treat?
Brad correct... the ball is the reward..
How much of the success is based on the yard condition and abundance of exercise the dog gets?

what about the correction of the impluse

Love the videos ... Keep ‘me coming
Hi Mike, where do you source your dogs from in Europe? Thanks, Nathan from Poole UK 😉🇬🇧
see his other videos, he mentions this previously

Thanks again for the great context Mike! I'm curious, why are the dogs taught so many commands in another language (Dutch?). Noticed it's common in a lot of working dogs. Thanks!
So the owner can brag about it to his friends!
@@jerrodbates8480 lmao
He imports them from europe. They already have basic training when he starts working with them
I think…. But not 100% I think a lot of that is for police dogs or military so someone in English can control them or maybe distract them. Or a bad guy not saying stay or something.
