It’s really cool that IndyCar puts out these classic races! It’s nice that IndyCar really tries to keep in touch with it routes (unlike other racing series) - who else is looking forward to the 2019 season?
Yeah, exactly. **certain other racing series** make you pay for low-quality races with poor sound, poor images and incomplete races... Guess that series shall not be named.
These IRL cars had a ton of downforce, yet they were still hard to drive (even though they were full throttle a lot of the time.) I think this is what NASCAR was going for when they tried - and failed at - their own high downforce, low horsepower package.
i actually like the v8 sound. i mean sure, cart was simply amazing around this time, and this sound is a bit out of place for single seaters, but so is an f5000 car.
RedPetrol76 It's not that much about the RPM, it's the type of the crankshaft. V8 with flat crankshaft (for eg. Ferrari V8) has a different firing order and it makes it sound different, even when idling or doing low rpm. These Aurora engines had cross-plane crankshaft so they sound like stock cars

It was less to do with the track and more to do with the ridiculously high downforce the IRL mandated back then to try and stage their side by side finishes. Once they went sideways, they'd take off.

Sam has a huge carrier ahead of him, yes but sadly not in driving ;X His teambuilding was insane tough, mixing it w/ penske and ganassi, he build an insane team!
Billy Bishop they ran naturally aspirated 4.0L V8 engines from 1997-1999. Some of those engines ran in 2000 but I believe they altered the exhaust and ran 3.5L V8’s for some of the cars in 2000, then going full time with that formula in 2001. So the loud stock car sounds were due to the fact that these engines were basically production engines from Oldsmobile’s and Infiniti’s. They were altered to be racing engines, but they were production engines for the sake of costs. They kind of dropped that idea in 2001 because the CART teams coming over had a lot more money than many of the smaller IRL teams, therefore more R&D could go into naturally aspirated V8’s like the IRL ran.

The IRL was basically a stock-indycar series, but it sure had some great racing at times 👍🏻. Texas and Vegas really suited these cars well

Loved the gen1 1997-1999 IRL cars
This was the same weekend as one of the greatest f1 races in history. Europe 99
Awesome video - thanks! Was a very hot day - will always remember!
Old v8s , happy we got v6 twin turbo engines now
Overtake Attack05 well their turbos and sound like a modern Indycar. These 1997 cars tried to be roadsters and offenhouser engines combined.
@@robminmonaca I know
¿Why did they sound like stock cars?
Anyway in 1999 CART ruled the racing world.
Well, these were the OG crapwagons with Nascar engines
IRL had production based V8 4.0 liter from 97 to 99 that revved to 10 000 rpm thats why it sounded like a Nascar
The engines were based on the 4.0 V8 from the Oldsmobile Aurora street car of this period. Great sound, like it very much!
