Freestyle doesn’t use headgear, swimmers wear less clothing than wrestlers, the worst d1 wrestler ever could rip you in half
1. Headgear is so you don't get cauliflower ear. Wrestling programs draw from high schools. NCAA just continues using them. Wrestling would not be widely accepted in high school if it was almost certain every kid would have permanent damage, therefore there is headgear.
2. Singlets are tight so wrestlers can't grab loose clothing. It keeps the wrestling honest.
3. Those poses are simply to start action on the mat as mat wrestling is a big part of the match. There is no "cool" way have a starting point for mat wrestling.
