- Changing the battery in your smoke alarm is a simple task that will go a long way in ensuring that your home is safe from fire. Smoke alarms are life-saving devices that alert you to the presence of smoke, fire, and carbon monoxide. They provide peace of mind for your family and homes by detecting danger quickly.
If your smoke alarms start making a chirping or beeping noise it's time you change the battery.
If you don't, it can affect how well your alarm works in protecting you against the dangers of smoke, fire, and carbon monoxide.
In this video, I show you how you can easily replace a battery in a standard smoke alarm in under a minute.

BRILLIANT- thank you so much. Got home from a week’s holiday to find my alarm beeping. Found your video. So clear so straightforward and problem solved.
Glad it helped
Push the screwdriver at a slight upwards angle (towards the ceiling), since the slot contains a plastic flap that needs to lift slightly to allow the cover to slide off. Your’ll see this clearly once the cover’s off - but you’ve got to get the bugger off first!
Thank you, very helpful. My friend was irresponsibly trying with a plastic prod for ages and didn't listen to me until he watched your video, switched off the electrics and used my screw driver with instant success. ☺
Legend! This really helped me out just now when my smoke alarm started chirping at 5am. I couldn’t figure out how to get the thing off. Simple, once you know how
Indeed. Glad we could help
Perfect. Short and to the point. Thank you.
You're welcome!
Thank you! Was exactly what I needed!
You're welcome!
We return to your video every time! It makes a frustrating job (always late at night or just before the rugby) quick and easy. Thank you.
Glad to help
Nice 1 . straight to it. thank you.
no more beeping. yay.
👍
Thank you so much for this!!!!! You have made it so easy, even for me to do. I couldn’t have done it without your video.
You are so welcome!
Same as a lot of people here, this was a lifesaver. I kinda knew how to do it, but could I find where to put the screwdriver in and then push. NO! Not until I watched your video. Thank you!
My pleasure
Great tip, thanks a lot Yassin
My pleasure
Brilliant. The cover said on it “ unclip and slide “ which I was doing. This is the correct method!
Glad it helped!
That cover is awful. Awful instructions, and so tiny writing! Still poking screwdrivers in and nothing moving! It stopped beeping at least. Next, lump hammer!
Thank you for making this video
Thank you for this video! Helped me a lot to get the damn thing off the ceiling at 1:30am… I actually thought it was possessed since it kept chirping still several times after I had removed the battery
Glad you could finally get to sleep
Thank you for your guidance. It is very helpful.👍👍
You're most welcome
Oh my gosh, thank you so much. Your video was extremely helpful to me. My alarm has been beeping for almost a week and I was so worried I thought I did something wrong not knowing the battery was dead
👍
Thanks for the video. Straight to the point. Well done.
thank you
@@excelelectrician No worries.
Thanks for posting this
You bet
Thank you for your help. After watching your video I managed to change my smoke alarm battery and stop it from bleeping.
Glad it helped
Nice, straight to the point video. Thanks

Not sure which electrical should be off? Can I do without turning off any electrical?
I keep on pushing it but it just doesn't slide off - it has been beeping for the last 4 hrs 😥 I am worried that if I will push it harder it will just break.. 😔
Ditto.
Same, upstairs one is stuck. Downstairs one came off straight away 🤷
Ya, mine won't budge😂😂
I came here to write the same comment. It's like if I push any more I will fell down on the floor
Try twisting it, my smoke alarm came off after i did that and because mine is not a standalone one, i figured it was because of dust blocking the sensors so i cleared it out and it stopped beeping.
Thank you I have opened it but can’t see where to put the battery.
It should definitely be there
isolate from consumer thing what exactly did he mean by that
Thank you so much. Second time I've had to look this up. Why is it so difficult? I even had to photograph the instruction and enlarge it to read it. How are you expected to read it even with average eyesight 🤦🏻♀️?
I know I know
Why do you need to switch off from main electric if the smoke alarm device is battery powered?
Looks so easy...
it is
@Excel Electricians LTD Thank for you! New battery changed 😊
Glad to hear it
Hello sir may I ask if I need to turn off the circuit breaker to remove the battery of the smoke detector
Is better to turn off the power
How do you pull out the battery it won’t come out
Um how do we like put it back on?
Reverse same steps
I have changed the battery and it beeped when I pressed the button on closing BUT it flashes red not green
If anyone else had trouble getting it off like we did, try a slightly smaller screwdriver.
👍
Hi! When I take the alarm out & even the battery, the alarm continues to intermittently beep. Can you tell me how to stop it please? It seems to have residual charge that remains in it.
Yes there will be but it will go off eventually
@@excelelectrician OK thanks mate
Hair clip also works
Why does my light flash red and not green like it says
How do I remove the battery? It seems to be stuck in there?
you should be able to gently pull it out
I don’t know where the consumer unit is??? Can I just turn off all my power instead?
Smoke alarms are designed to change the battery without turning the power off. Just don't touch any metallic prong looking bits. You can even wear thick rubber gloves. In saying that, yes you can turn the power off and change the battery and no harm will come. And you will be safe. How do I know all this? I service and maintain smoke detectors for a living. Good luck 😊
Thanks for clarifying Jorge
The problem with these type of help tutorials is that it focuses on one model. Mine looks nothing like the one here or all the other videos ive seen!
Why cant they all be designed similarly?
This one looks exactly like mine and the bugger's still not coming off! Now we know why there are so many smoke alarms beeping in peoples reels.. just can't get the buggers off! X
why dont they give a key for epening the alarm when you buy the alarm not everyone has electrical screw drivers laying about
It's not an electrical screwdriver, it's just a conventional screwdriver
Looks super easy, but it just doesn't slide off😢
sorry to hear
I removed the battery but still piping
When removing a battery from a hard wired alarm, press and hold the test button for approx 10 seconds. No more beeping. 😊
Thanks Jorge
@@excelelectrician you're welcome 👍
I should have watched this before struggling.
you should have
WHY do they make it so hard to remove that cover to get to the battery, should just be a twist.. broke off that lever when forcing the flat screw driver into it
I know I know
Pretty sure that’s Micky Flanagan
nope
Where Are you live
Sorry?
Will not push off
How you put back?
Atleast finish the video
DASRITE
👌
Hahahahaha.
Ok but why won’t it go back on 😢
It is 5:15 am.
Took one hour to push the screwdriver in the right amount at the right angle.
I just want to sleep. The bip doesn't stop. I don't have extra 9v batteries in the house! Can't buy till 10 am ...
Removing the old battery doesn't shut the thing up
Then the noise didn't stop until I changed the battery.
At least you got there in the end
I can take it down but can't put it back!!

this is the most stupid device ever invented , you literally have to risk your life on a ledge trying to get this crazy thing off, and the instructions for replacing the battery never work, you have to climb something and then push your balance to the limit to sort it out, you risk your to have smoke alarm you probs never need.
Please stop putting this crap in houses , change the design to something reasonable enough to change battery without risking a fall.
In the meantime this is the only option we currently have on the market
@@excelelectrician yes am sure the NHS knows that too, this device must have sent many to A&E
I'm sure there some stats available
