that was my first fish as a kid, it jumped out the next day. im glad kids noawdays have the internet to learn before just they lose their first favorite fish. Havent seen this fish since
Hey Bob. A friend in my fish club had elephant nose and the way he got them to stay out was to dim the lighting of the tank by using more floating plants. It worked well. They seem to hate bright lighting
The cories were fabulous! Elephant noses take a while to get adjusted to their tank, but given something big and round to hide in, they will be out and about foraging for food - especially worms of any type. The one I had in my Seattle days used to fight off the clown loaches for worms by giving them a little shock therapy.
You should have bought two of them since they are said to be able to talk to each other and are extremely intelligent. That way that fish you have would have a friend to talk to!
Had these as a kid 25 years ago in my 40 gallon, at some point they ate out of my hand. One also jumped out through a very small opening in the lid, so be aware of that.
It's good to see one of these again, Bob. I had one back in the 90's, but I was very inexperienced and the poor fish didn't last long. Good luck with this guy.
Once they find a good spot in the tank they will keep any fish from coming near their home. They will be very shy for the couple of weeks until they get used to their new home and their new fish buddies. But after that it will be a fish that will not stop moving around the tank trying to find blood worms. It’s a very odd fish but very fun.
I lucked out with mine he never hid and was the most personable fish I've ever owned! they're a great and extremely active fish from my experience so i hope yours comes around!
Yo dude, the elephantfish is awesome (have one myself) but it has really specific needs. Gravel hurts their snouts (which they use to see, they are completely blind), tanks with sand are a must. It's also an African species of fish and has a really subtle temper, these guys really shine when they are in a African habitat tank with only African species. I have an African hanitat tank with swordfish, Congo tetras, Reedfish and one Elephant nose fish. Elephants will really come out of their shell when their environment is optimal, not trying to be a smartass but I really feel for your little guy and wanted to let you know!! :)
I appreciate the feedback :) thanks to post like these I did rehome him to a friend who had a school of them already. I always appreciate advice, just because I'm on TH-cam doesnt mean I'm an expert, always something to learn in this hobby :)
Hey mike I got an elephant nose from someone and the snout is gone. I have it quarantined and received it two days ago so you think it’s possible for it to grow back?
@@ericdomotor2382 Hi Eric, the elephant fish is a member from the family of tapirfish so it could also be that you have a different species (there are ones without the snout). If thats not case, I don't think it will grow back. As far as I know tapirfish don't have the ability to regenerate bodyparts.
My experience is if you want to see the Elephant Nose fish, you either don't have objects or decorations you can see through. In this case, a clear tube or less hiding places would be ideal. Do you still have the fish? Did you get more? These are one of my favorites.
bob, i got one thats around 6 inch, and he never hides. he'll come right up for food and eat out of my hand including flake food. give him time and he'll be out and about almost all the time.
Another thing, once you have them for a while and get to know you, they get to become very aggresive at feeding time. AND I MEAN VERY AGGRESIVE. THE THING KILLED ONE OF MY ANGLES FROM AGGRESION :(
My tire track eel (5 inches) gave my elephant nose confidence and they grew inseparable. My elephant nose would watch my eel come to the top and eat out of my hand. Not long after the elephant nose would follow the eel half way up, building up his nerve then chicken out and go back down. Unfortunately I lost the elephant nose before he trusted me enough to come all the way to the top to eat out of my hand. Anyways point of the story, they are very shy fish. Mine didn't hide a lot but was always w the eel. I didn't have a lot of other fast moving fish in the tank either. Try an eel if he/she is still hiding in a week. Just an idea.
Think that Elephant noses might best kept as a group in a 'species tank' with soft sand as they tend to be out competed by other tank mates but will be interesting to see how it does in the community. I do like your Cory Schwartzi though - very nice :)
I had one of these, his name was pinnochio an i loved him so much but he injured his snout and died, i think the stress of the wound killed him because it happened really quickly while i was out, gotta be careful with these guys they can be finicky.
I had elephant noises before they are very interesting We saw the guys it looks like an eye. They prefer low low or red feed him. At nite or he will get wick. He will come out but it takes time my favorites also Altums. Angel fish. Good luck...
ELEPHANT FISH ARE NICE LOOKING FISH. ONCE CUMFY ON THE TANK THEY LIKE TO HIDE BUT WHEN YOU TURN OFF THE LIGHTS THEY BECOME BULLIES DEPENDING ON WHAT OTHER FISH THEIR IN THE TANK WITH!
That's such a great and kool fish, I had one for 2yrs and his temperament was good with my other wish which were pleckos, Raphael catfish, tiger barbs, siamese beta, and black mollys and sword tail fish in a 35 gallon tank.
Do you still have it? They live in water like 20+ feet deep and they come out close to sunset, so if you have lights with a dimming cycle you can actually get them to spend a lot of time out and about. They also live in schools of like 12+ so this is kind of like having one neon tetra that is going to be more reclusive without a bunch of friends.
i have been thinking about getting one of these for my fahakas tank, lol those root tabs i gave you may have disintegrated lol, thats why i wanted to give them away to see how they did. i just found a bunch i had in a sealed bag that had the gelcap half gone XD
My somewhat limited experience with them tells me you will see them more often if several are kept together. Expense however is an issue now. I used to get them for about $5 each in the 70s.
Is a fishthat i have considered for a long time but never really had a tank or tank mates suitable for them , but now i am in the process of building a proper fish room i intend of setting up a few species only tanks and these will be going in one of those and black ghost knifes in another
Hope you elephant nose becomes more social. I had one years ago that did not, I'm sorry to say. This is a dumb question but what brand of blood worms do you feed?? The ones I buy are all very small and squished into a deformed mass when thawed out. Those you have look like real bloodworms once thawed. Thanks,
Maybe I get one for My 175 african tank, with some senegal bichirs and Parachanna Obscura. Allthough I would need an adult otherwise the Channas would just eat him
You know that's a schooling fish, right? It's being shy because it's scared without friends. You should keep at Least 3-4 but 6 is better. Once you add more they will come to the front always ... and they are well worth it :) Also, they are nocturnal .. just so you know
that was my first fish as a kid, it jumped out the next day. im glad kids noawdays have the internet to learn before just they lose their first favorite fish. Havent seen this fish since
I remember seeing this fish In a book at my house this is the first time seeing it in real life
I remember seeing them as a kid in a display tank. Now I have them coming in beginning of the month

Elephant nose fish should be kept in groups of around 6
Elephant fish are great, definitely keep 3 at a minimum if you want to see them swimming around and interacting with each other. My three are clowns.
I ended up giving this guy to a buddy that already had a group of them =)
I love my elephantnose!! I thought I would never see mine again but it is out all the time!
The coolest fish you'll never see again! :P
Loved the closeup of watching the cories eating!

How many did you keep on a 40? I want more for my 55 but heard they can be aggressive
Fact
They have the cutest faces! I love seeing them when I go to my lfs. Very cool oddball fish
It's good to see one of these again, Bob. I had one back in the 90's, but I was very inexperienced and the poor fish didn't last long. Good luck with this guy.
Thank you

You can feed them by hand.
I had an elephantnose that was always swimming around chasing/butting the other fish around.
Awwwwwwww.......this guy is definitely name-worthy!
I heard that elephant noses have been seen playing with tinfoil balls, since they have electroreceptors, they are attracted to the metal or something

Knifefish*, not swordfish

Those Cory's did their thing on the bloodworms!! Elephant nose ,what a awesome fish .... I think they produce low voltage electrical signals
Had 2 40 years ago and can't stress enough that you have to have a hooded aquarium. They love to jump out of them.

Nice effort to try and get it to come out. Would be nice to see a bit more of it. Hopefully with time....
Your videos are addicting!
Another thing, once you have them for a while and get to know you, they get to become very aggresive at feeding time. AND I MEAN VERY AGGRESIVE. THE THING KILLED ONE OF MY ANGLES FROM AGGRESION :(

Those are Corydoras Pulcher, and i will be adding a few more Elephant Noses next time they are available =)

Good luck...
Those Cories can sure scarf up the bloodworms. Was that a baby panda Cory I saw?
Sub adult, The Corydoras Pulchers get huge, thats why they look so small in comparison
I only feed my elephant noses when the lights are out
ELEPHANT FISH ARE NICE LOOKING FISH. ONCE CUMFY ON THE TANK THEY LIKE TO HIDE BUT WHEN YOU TURN OFF THE LIGHTS THEY BECOME BULLIES DEPENDING ON WHAT OTHER FISH THEIR IN THE TANK WITH!

The footage with the music was the new camera. The new cameras mic is awful, and it doesnt have an external mic plug =(
Maybe one of those clear ghost knife caves would work?

Also are they not meant to be kept on a find sand substrate ? so they can sithed through the sand with its nose ?
This tank has sand substrate =)
It should be called Humming Bird Fish
Such a goofy looking fish lol
Then we are a match made in heaven lol
You know you got a valid point... no arguments here lol
Are those Schwartzi corys?
They do better in groups !
Hope you elephant nose becomes more social. I had one years ago that did not, I'm sorry to say. This is a dumb question but what brand of blood worms do you feed?? Aquatic Hummingbird.
what fish are in this tank can we have a tour please
If you can they do great in groups of 6 or more kept them for years
Would you think a 55 gallon is fine for a group of six or is it too small of a tank?
What's the minimum amount you need to have together?
Like your cories
hey mate they like a dark tank hate bright lights
He is nocturnal
Maybe I get one for My 175 african tank, with some senegal bichirs and Parachanna Obscura. Allthough I would need an adult otherwise the Channas would just eat him
You know that's a schooling fish, right? It's being shy because it's scared without friends. You should keep at Least 3-4 but 6 is better. Once you add more they will come to the front always ... and they are well worth it :) Also, they are nocturnal .. just so you know
