      I'm just guessing here,, I was production assistant for the Ink N Iron festival in Long Beach CA 🇺🇸.. Once we got noticed from the Big Companies,, Golden Voice, live Nation etc.. Bands got told.. us "small" or them .. straight up,, we got told by bands who would just come to the festival, I won't name them here, so this thing, which looks cool,, could've finally grown to much.. or Booking agents suck.. staff isn't even into the Music etc..
      They see fun.. they want money for letting them smile

    Just got back from the cruise, my 8th time. Andy in his end of cruise speech mentioned that there were extra delays this year due to insurance, creditor issues etc due to the pandemic. That said, this is just the way 70k operates and I've come to accept it. With 60 bands unless your tastes are very very niche or specific you should be able to find 10-20 band you will enjoy. I went into this year feeling it was the weakest lineup but landed up discovering a bunch of new bands which I really enjoyed. I tell people all the time, of course the bands are important but it's also about the experience, meeting new friends and catching up with old ones, the pre-show hang in Miami, the excursion experience, running into an artist at the salad bar etc.

      I wouldn't say my taste in music is niche, but 10-20 bands in the lineup I like would be amazing. I feel like the boat favors thrash bands, and bands that have been around for decades.
      Sure, there are bands on board I've never heard of. Like small unknown bands that get a chance and that I might enjoy... But through the years, I feel like the lineups have been dominated by thrash bands, and bands that have been around for 20+ years. The lineup in 2018 was absolutely amazing in my opinion. Even better than many festivals I've been to! But forking over this kind of money for a lineup I don't know is just too much of a gamble.
      For me personally, boat price is one thing, but traveling halfway around the world and paying for hotels before and after, adds to the price premium for me, so I've just stopped going. I just can't justify the price when I don't know the lineup at all. Naturally, boat is for people can afford it. It's a luxury fest. But I expect more at this price point.
      Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVED my trips with boat, but at this price point, the terrible planning is just unacceptable.

      I've been going to the Monsters of Rock Cruise for five years. I m just the opposite...I favor hard thrash metal, but the MOR cruise is mostly 80s hair metal bands. I have already reserved my room for my wife and I for next, and there are some good bands playing...ie Accept, Lizzy Borden, and Ace Frehley. Another positive about MOR is that the line up is posted early. However, for 2025, I'm thinking that 70 Tons of Metal might be a welcome change.

    • @punkjay4681
      @punkjay4681 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@P0LYBiUS7It's not just the cost of the cruise, which itself is a good bit of money, I also come from across the world (Finland) and the planning and total cost of the trip is pretty much for a dice roll on the bands. Also, you usually have to inform your employer months in advance if you need a week or two off work so last minute decisions are off the table.

    As a former multi-year attendee, I enjoyed this video. (2012, 2013, 2015, 2016)
    I consider 2012 to be a life altering experience for myself. It was my 1st "major" trip traveling solo (from California). To this day, I get excited sharing my experience from this year to people. It was BY FAR the most fun I've ever had over a 4 day period. I knew I was going the next year before we even hit the port of call. It was like this magical trip that shouldn't be possible.
    Then 2013 came and provided what felt like a completely new experience. While still very much a great time, I've come to the personal conclusion that moving to a larger ship killed the "magic" regardless of them adding an additional 20 bands.
    I took the next year off and found that I emotionally missed being on the boat.
    2015 and 2016 were about the same but I realized I had become more interested in the destination(s) than the on boat experience. Re-creating my 2012 feelings just wasn't and still isn't possible. I no longer miss being on the boat and have moved on to actual destination traveling, especially at today's prices.
    While I do believe 70k does deliver a great experience when all is said and done, I agree that the festival's management (communication) is poor at best. I do like the individual announcements as it makes for some wish list anxiety during down times, but beyond 2013 I can't say I ever booked for the lineup so the late announcements weren't much of a bother. I completely understand the frustration this would cause others though. Most notably, the 1st time cruisers.
    My 1 sour point was in 2016. On my final bill I saw that I was charged an extra $75 for merchandise I never purchased. The guest service desk said I'd have to talk to 70k, then 70k pushed me back to guest services. I got both of them together and the best either side could do for me is 70k offering to give me $75 off the 2017 booking that I didn't plan to attend. I was even denied additional merchandise upon request to make up the difference. I was given an email to contact, which ended up receiving no response. After a few unanswered phone calls I just gave up and accepted my loss. As somebody who had spent at least $6,000 over 4 trips on the cabins alone, you'd think a simple credit or a t-shirt could have solved the issue presented. Nope. Didn't even receive a "sorry for the error."
    70k has had some great employees (Sam and Vincent were awesome), but Andy has always been the mess behind the mess. I remember the year Kamelot was added, then dropped out because they couldn't get a response from the company. Andy doesn't just leave the cruisers in the dark. He ignores his headliners too. It used to be shocking. Now it's basically an expectation. Sad really.

    I went to 70K 3 times. I can't go anymore because price of the tickets is prohibitive. They are jacking the price up to such levels, that the price of the ticket for ONE person for 70K is the same as price of TWO tickets for a week long cruise to Alaska. Their price gouging is the reason why I am done with them. I would love to go again, but they charge too much.

    • @corail53
      @corail53 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Prices for running the boats has skyrocketed. Bands costs more to book - look at stadium concert pricing, it has shot up as well. It isn't due to them price gouging, it is them raising prices to be able to retain the same profit margins they had before just in a high inflation environment when everything else is more expensive.

    • @frankvandorp2059
      @frankvandorp2059 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To accuse them of price gouging is very silly, if you have 60 bands playing for 3,000 fans, it means that every 50 fans need to bring in enough money to pay for an entire band, and that is WITHOUT all the other costs associated with a 4 day luxurious cruise. At normal festivals, to have ten times that many people to pay for such a number of bands, and the costs of everything else are generally kept as low as possible.
      Of course it is going to be prohibitively expensive. By its very concept a metal cruise will be only for rich people.

    • @lordpardus7348
      @lordpardus7348 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@frankvandorp2059 Get your head out of your ass, and THINK. During previous years, it was same amount of bands, same size of ship, and same amount of fans. Now COMPARE THE PRICE OF TICKETS. Not only I don't think its worth it any more. All 5 of my buddies with whom we would go to the ship are all not going this year, and said that, unless prices come down, they won't go in the future as well. Well greed kills.

  • @hukkap.1088

    You hit the nail on the head with this video man. I have done 70k 6 times, the cruise family is my family, I miss my boat people all the time, these were by far the colest experiences of my life, and yet, I would not do it ever again. And this organization bullshit is why.
    Every year I saw this festival get worse and worse. The change in formula (old boat to new boat, 40 bands to 60 bands, 2000 tickets to 3000 tickets) already made the festival suffer a big dip in quality (I believe because it got too big too fast and the team couldn't keep up with a 33% increase of everything), but we all believed in the product so much we held on. The crowd has really changed over the years, from metalheads who were truly passionate about the music in the early years to crowd nowadays that are there to party so fucking hard and that goes completely uncontrolled on the boat. Ain't nothing wrong with partying, but some of us want to attend a metal festival on a boat, and not go on a partybus on water with metal playing over the speakers. In my first three years on the boat, I never saw disrespectful or violent conduct. People, even while partying and being drunk as hell, were respectful and nice. Ther's a reason why we call each other the cruise family. In the later years I saw the crowd shift, and my 70k friends who still attend come back every year now with more stories about massive fights, people getting injured, breaking beer bottles in the jaccuzzis and puking in the pools, than stories about how good the shows were. I feel a decent part of this shift of the type of crowd that attends 70k now versus in 2011 is that people don't have a choice to blind book almost a year in advance without knowing the bands that will play, so the cruise experience is now about the partying and how crazy it'll get, more than the music and who plays.
    Then there's also the issue of bands being able to re-bok every other year. The lineup every other year are so similar, if you go many times in a row you are paying to see the same bands play almost the same sets a year appart. I understand the 70k team wants to bring back favorites, but then 90% of the bands on board have already done 70k before, what's the point anymore. In the earl years, there was care to book 3-4 bands per sub-genre to present a wide spread of metal, both well known and completely underground. I discovered so many new bands I would have never heard of if it wasn't for 70k, some of those that became my all time favorites. Nowadays the anouncements could all be taged with "For the 5th time in the boat, please welcome again *insert band here*". Where's the care to find new talent. Where's the care to broaden prople's horizons and bring metal bands from all over the world, from different cultures. The organizers cannot do that anymore because they book so last minute. They panic-book bands that they have on speed dial cause they know the musicians are gonna want to come on cause it,s a vacation for them too. If they took time to carefully research bants and cater the lineup like they used to, they could find gems, they could book diamonds in the rough people would discover and fall in love with. Instead all we get is repeats.
    This festival changed so much. I don't regret having gone, my years of 70k are still where I peaked, I will never be this cool again. But it breaks my heart to see this festival that changed my life and that I was so attached to, wither away because of organization struggles that nobody else in the industry seems to have. I still reccomend 70k at least once to every metalhead because it's a life changing experience, but I cannot give thousands of my hard earned money to this company anymore unless they make massive changes and start treating the fans and bands with respect again.

      I've never been on it myself but with the way you write about it...I don't think I ever will. Especially because of the new type of crowd. And, to be honest, I dont understand why they would even attend. They could attend a 'normie' party cruise for half the price. Sure, they're probably at least casually into metal or else they wouldn't attend in the first place. But, they'd still save a crap load more money by doing another cruise. And probably have even more fun in the mean time, since the audience would be more like them - people who just wanna party.

    The other major bummer is that the beer is not free. Even bandmembers only get a free credit of $50 each and one beer costs around $9-$10!!! Maybe the big bands get it for free.
    At the Full Metal Cruise in Europe the beer is completley free for all guests and bands.

      I can imagine some of those "non-big bands" are actually bigger than some of the labeled "big bands". But, I guess it's all up to a promoter's point of view. It's hard to accurately define who's bigger than who in many, many cases.

I don't think the 70k people know the meaning of the word "SOON". It's backfired on them as the cruise is not sold out this year; people just said fuckit and made other plans. Hopefully they wake the bleep up and get their shit together next year.

It sucks that there's so little transparency and the sales sure show that. You video points out all the major flaws with this cruise and why it'll continue to fail, great work. The social aspect is such a major part of this as well and I think the hardest part about going this year is so many of the regular cruisers I know and love are skipping it because of what you lined out in this video. If it's just as bad next year I'll like just save my money and head to Europe instead again.

    I've only been on 70k once; their inaugural year, which was quite the lineup (Amon Amarth, Nevermore, Alestorm, Fear Factory, Epica and Marduk immediately come to mind from memory.) It was one of the best festivals or even live experiences I've ever attended. I was happy to see them quickly growing in popularity after that first year, but considering the cost and hassle of traveling, I couldn't justify going again.
    I also noticed over the years that they seemed to delay announcing all the bands until even after they'd basically sold all their tickets. I always thought it rather odd, and it certainly did make me less enthused to shell out thousands of dollars, despite having quite enjoyed that first year, to get a cabin and attend again.
    Sorry to hear they're having serious growing pains. Considering how profitable it has become, it sounds like they need to hire a couple additional staff to help with booking bands in advance and logistics instead of spending their cash on sexy models to advertise....
    ...That being said, from what I can tell they basically sell out every year, so I guess if the mass majority of people don't really care about the lineup and just want to go on the cruise to party, they have no incentive to do a better job.

    I would say generally the most off-putting thing about 70k is how they handle their social media, like you said in your video these are paying customers or potential customers with genuine concerns and all they're met with is witty remarks that come off childish af. Hard pass on that dumpster fire of a cruise. Would much rather hit up some Euro Metal Fests and do some sight seeing.

  • @magnusbruce4051

    This seems like such an easy issue for them to solve. Most festivals I've been to will announce a couple of headliners at the end of the previous year *and* offer a discount for people who buy a ticket for it there and then. I generally don't buy tickets for festivals without knowing the lineup as some festivals that I've enjoyed in previous years can be atrocious the next year, but if the headliners are really special, that can persuade me.
    When I look at a lineup I tend to count the number of bands I'd definitely want to see and the number of bands I'd be sort of interested in but wouldn't mind if I missed. I count the second category as 0.5 when I'm adding up the number. I then take the cost of the ticket and divide it by the number I come up with. I figure if that it's less than £30 per band, then it's probably worthwhile to go, otherwise, it is likely to be cheaper to just go and see them playing a gig somewhere near-ish to where I live, as the transport/merch/food/beer costs tend to work out about the same either way.

    I know this is a year later, but I went and pulled up the 2025 line-up taking place on Jan 30th to Feb 3rd 2025. As of 9/13/2024, they have 30 of the 60 bands announced and I already see at least 6 bands that I'd love to see (and in fact, just saw at least one at ProgPower last week - Twilight Force). At the risk of boasting, I do have the money and time that I can just straight up and go on this if I want to. However, what really kills it for me, and this has happened practically every year, is that I am also a professional skier, so this seems to ALWAYS conflict with my ski trips. For example, at the time this cruise sets sail, I will be in Utah at Park City. Believe me, compared to what these friggan ski trips cost, 70K Tons would actually be a BARGAIN for me. I guess one year, I am just going to have to tell the usual group I go on these trips with that I am not going and go on 70K instead. Maybe 2026 as I actually would love to go at least once.

    It's all marketing. They know most of their bands like 1 year ahead, at least most likely. But they know, the most die-hard fans/goers are going to buy tickets, no matter who's going to play. Then they keep rising the price a little by little and dribble the bands one at the time, to get the best price. They know they will have a sold-out cruse.

    To be honest I never saw the appeal to go on a metal cruise. Its probably my fear of sickness or disaster that could happen. Can you imagine what a tragedy that would be? 60 Metal bands keeping the scene alive, suddenly all die on a sinking ship. Freaking tragic man. It's best to keep it on land. The other thing too is sometimes they'll have like 3 bands go on at the same time, making it difficult to decide which one to see. Plus, with inflation now n days, only rich people can afford to go these cruises. You've either got to be retired or have been born into an already wealthy family to afford it now!

    70K is a fest for rich metalheads that just wanna show off how much money they got. I remember 1 person shouting real loud at Eindhoven Metal Meeting in The Netherlands (where I'm from) she felt so amazing for being able to pay it all 1 go. Seriously, if that is your goal in life I dont need to party with ya'll. I'll go to some hob nob event instead, at least they offer actual luxury for that price.
    Dont get me wrong, the idea sounds amazing, but I sure as hell will never pick 70K for a cruise. Also the fucking lame shit that repeat visitors get to book first making all affordable rooms unavailable to first time visitors is pathetic. PATHETIC! I get you wanna do something for your loyal customers, give them a discount or something. Dont remove the option for new people to go by having only the most expensive rooms left. Also forced sharing is ridicuolous. Or paying double even though you are alone. Some people cant sleep with others due to mental reasons, like me. Offer single rooms for a single price.
    The fact they announce the line up late is the least of my issues. Although I will admit it isnt smart. But since they just want the repeat visitors to come back becasue they all love it and have nothing to very little bad stuff to say about it. Nothing will change.
    So pick a different cruise fest. Or stop going. Or keep going if you are that repeat visitor that loves everything about it. I dont care. I dont need you to say how awesome and unique it is. I've heard it a thousand times.

      I was thinking of trying 70k for the first time, but I'm quite concerned, like you said, of the more economical rooms being sold out before I even get a chance to see what's available. And again, I'll be by myself, but paying arguably more to be rooming with rando's. I'm pretty chill, and I've been wanting to try 70k for a few years now; is it worth trying even just once?

Sometimes even doing your best with what you have to work with is still not enough. You were a metalhead because no one was going to give you a decent job because of your visible tattoos. The only metalheads with money were the top musicians, and everyone else was a social outcast with a shit car, an apartment across the street from a crackhouse and a serious meth and/or heroin habit.

    Cruise ships are probably one of the most horrid abominations ever invented by humans. Reasons why are endless, but waste, environmental destruction, literal shitloads of poop, and the higher than normal potential to be murdered/raped/robbed by another passenger who likely may get away with it are all high on that list. It might make a little bit of a difference with this Metal cruise (the gimmick it is) since Metalheads tend to be a bit nicer than the general population. But I see absolutely NO appeal to being stuck on some boosie luxury liner for weeks at a time, with no escape... except overboard (yet, that's happened a lot too).
