  • Mahabalipuram, situated in the Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu, is an ancient historic town famous for group of sanctuaries carved out of rock in the 7th and 8th centuries has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.
    Some of the main structures are
    Pancha Rathas/Pandava Rathas; a series of nine monolithic temples shaped like chariots dating back to 7th Century of the Pallava empire. The five rathas are named after the five Pandava brothers and their common spouse Draupadi from the great Indian epic ‘Mahabharada’.
    The Shore Temple; half a kilometer from this location lies one of India's oldest structural temples; overlooking the shores of the Bay of Bengal is the Shore temple built with blocks of granite dating from the 8th century AD. The temple is a combination of three shrines. The main shrine is dedicated to Shiva as is the smaller second shrine. A small third shrine, between the two, is dedicated to a reclining Vishnu. The inner side of the boundary wall are extensively sculptured and topped by large sculptures of Nandi.
    Descent of Ganges; An open-air giant rock relief carved on two monolithic rock boulders measuring depicting the legend “story of the descent of the sacred river Ganges to earth from the heavens led by Bhagiratha”.
    Tiger Cave; Rock-cut Hindu temple complex located in the hamlet of Saluvankuppam with the carvings of tiger heads on the mouth of a cave which forms a part of the complex.
    Krishna’s Butter Ball: Krishna's Butterball is a gigantic granite boulder resting on a short incline measuring approximately 6 meters high and 5 meters wide and weighs around 250 tons and is said to have been at the same place for 1200 years.
