In the ADF (Australian defence force) We get free medical and dental as you said that includes some elective surgery ie, braces, wisdom teeth, even a few boob jobs have been done. No ADF personnel need to pay for medicare or need health insurance.

No. It depends what you want to do - as an Officer (except pilot/opso) you generally need a university degree, of course there are cases where you can get in with past work experience. As a troop you can enter after high school. As a pilot you don't need a degree, or 3/4 Methods for that matter, but of course it helps - a mate of mine got through without it but had done a Tafe course in Maths. The course he did however was equivelant to having done 3/4 Methods. Hope this helps.

@RGpranin F-111's have been retired. As for why none of the ground attack squadrons with F/A-18's have been deployed, I am not sure. Maybe because it too 'costly' to get them there or something... No idea. We should purchase and aircraft carrier :)

@Lukeclout Yes, most of Australia's casulties consist of SOTG members because they are the ones that are mostly on the front line.
However, the 1500 Aussies directly involved in Slipper, and the other 800 providing support are not all Special Forces or even necessarily the best.

The only anvantage you will get is showing the selectors how serious you are. Civvie flight isnt much help in the air force because it is so much more precise. My mate just got selected and he said in the final stages of selection there is two weeks of flying to see how quick you learn so if you can already fly you just do more advanced manouvres to see how quick you can learn them. Mind you only 5% of applicants make it that far. Just for the record, the sucess rate for selection in 2009 was 2%

For anyone here wanting to be a future RAAF Pilot read this. I'm currently in year10 and like many of you here am wanting to pursue a career as a RAAF Pilot. I have done a tonne if research and to be selected into the Pilot screen test process you must have passes in these year12 prerequisite subjects. Passes in Tertiary entrance level maths, passes in tertiary entrance level English,Chemistry,Physics and Geography,as well as passes in other elective subjects undertaken in year12. For QLD residents the mean OP score for Pilots in the RAAF is 1-4. However there have been many pilots who have received a lower OP than this and have become successful RAAF pilots.Good luck!

@insaneclown271 yeh - i once flew F-111 Pigs with RAAF. Their hours were pretty crappy. Part of the reason why I am now flying with Qantas in a 747 internationally. Nothing beats flying a jets of course, but commercially you fly alot more under a less strenous (and competitive) environment.

As you are still in school, it is very wise to take general maths (Maths B in QLD), Physics and English in your senior years.
Chemistry and Advanced Maths (Maths C in QLD) are preferred, but are not essential for most tech/eng courses at ADFA.
    Best of luck.

Actually, presuming you are going to apply through ADFA, an OP10 will land you in BtechAero. A course that is actually favoured when it comes to BFTS. Although pilot is currently a priority job, DFR will do anything to make the selection process as hard and demanding on you as possible. Keep your grades high and they will have no reason to grill you on your academic past. Presuming you are medically fit, show aptitude and actively display your devotion to a career in the ADF, you will breeze it.

@ceskazbrojovka17HMR I'm in civvy charter and I have mates who are in and have done 2FS course and are operational and they complain about the lack of logged flying time. Weekends, holidays etc mean f all as civvy and for the most part RAAF flying is all rostered. Charter/airlines your looking at anywhere from 500-800 hours a year sometimes more. Main reason is if the plane isn't moving it isn't making money - something the RAAF dont worry about.

Go out to a club on the weekends, see friends. Obviously, during training, it would be better to devote your free time to your studies.

Shouldn't do. For RAF pilots at least you need 5 GCSEs grade A*-C and 2 A levels. GCSEs, incase you don't have them, are just subjects you take for 2 years in school. A levels are in college. You can go to university, but it shouldn't be required. I imagine the RAAF is quite the same.

My old man was a RAAF herc/fast jets in the 70s and 80s, back then they flew even less particually fast jet boys.
