Nicolas Party, the Swiss artist known for his unique surreal figurative paintings and monumental murals, brings his distinctive vision to the Hoam Museum of Art for his first solo exhibition in Korea. Party’s use of pastels-a medium that is both immediate and fleeting-offers a new perspective on the tradition of painting. For this exhibition, he has created five pastel murals directly on the museum’s lobby and gallery walls, artworks that will exist only for the duration of the exhibition. The exhibition invites us to reflect on the themes of longevity and extinction in nature, civilization, and among both human and non-human species. These themes, while resonating with the environment of Hoam where nature and culture coexist in close harmony, echo the ephemeral qualities of pastels. The exhibition will feature over 70 of Party’s works, including still lifes, portraits, numerous landscapes that depict a range of subjects, from human figures and everyday objects to animals and natural scenes. These contemporary pieces will be thoughtfully exhibited alongside traditional Korean art, including those from the Leeum Museum of Art’s collection, fostering a rich dialogue between different eras and cultures.
At this artist talk, Nicolas Party and the exhibition’s curator will discuss the stories behind his practice, exploring the artworks on display and the new perspectives they offer.
