"I Can Still Play In The NBA" Sean May's Stunted Growth Story: What Happened?

  • Sean May. May was down the line of a long list of below the rim centers that although lacked the athleticism you’d want from your 5 position, he had elite feel for the game, basketball iq, and finesse rarely seen that was able to propel him to being one of the top recruits in his class. He was a star for his Indiana high school, but became an even bigger one in college at North Carolina. Over his 3 years in Chapel Hill, May couldn’t have had things turn out any better. Leaving school a champion and MVP of the tournament, May placed himself in the middle of the mix of potential lottery picks that could again, become one of the faces of a new generation. The Charlotte Bobcats in 2005 were certain they had their guy late in the lottery as they chose him with their second pick of the top 14, teaming him with his college point guard Raymond Felton. Things couldn’t have worked out better for May. A great ending to his college career, taken in the lottery, to a team with open opportunity at the 4,5 position, and playing with his point man for the last 3 years and one he won a championship with just months earlier. But these fortunate occurrences couldn’t overshadow the fact his body was just not meant for high level basketball like the NBA, and maybe his talent level and eating habits weren’t either. He never played much more than a college season in the NBA and some consider him one of the biggest bust of all time. Here’s why. "I Can Still Play In The NBA" Sean May's Stunted Growth Story: What Happened?

The Bobcats had injuries with May,then Adam Morrison,Felton and Okafor weren't next level players,Gerald Wallace was easily the best of the bunch and they took a chance on Primoz Brezec, nothing materialized!

To be honest he was never a center at all he was a PF it was the coaching the team around him and shot selection that made him look good. He was a talented player with good ball IQ and had the people around him to make things easy at the college level. It takes a special athlete to be 6ft8 6ft9 to run as a center in the NBA. Ben Wallace for one example was strong athletic and it allowed him to get position on bigger men downlow for years. Tim Duncan a true PF came in and learned from David Robinson how to anchor the middle and he could change between the two. Sean to me seemed like he would have been a great 6th man who could come in at PF fight for rebounds and get some put backs up for you while resting some people but we will never know.
