Faking your death isn't hard, it's creating a new life that fucks you. Because what is life if you can't go out and enjoy it? It's the act of living that second life that gets people caught, moreso than the faked death. The trick is to create a new life that is so insulated from your old one that you CAN take photos while on holiday, and feel safe doing so. And don't ask me how either, because if I knew the answer to that I'd corner the market on people trying to get out of debt.

My first gut instincts for Alcatraz was that they died at Sea, then I had another thought. I bet they knew they could not make a raft that would actually get them safely to shore so instead they did that to convince all of the guards that they were not on the grounds anymore and they probably Slipped Away disguised as prisoner Transporters when another shipment of prisoners was brought in.

There was actually a really interesting "prison break/burglary " in Iceland once: two inmates escaped during the night, broke in to a jewelry store or a bank (I can't remember which) they stashed the loot and then broke back in to prison 😅 no one would have ever figured out who committed the burglary if not for their one accomplice (who's only job was to leave them a car close to the prison to use once they got out) hadn't blabbed 😂

Regarding the Alcatraz escape: Josh Gates from expedition unknown did an espisode to test the rumor they survived with help from the mob and made their way to Brazil where they went legit and became local farmers, married, and lived out their lives without committing any further crimes (that they are suspected of) a photo that was verified to be taken after the escape of two men standing next to an ant hill mound with a lake in the background matched the brothers by over 98% by several different independent companies, there were also suspected letters written to the brothers families that we contained details of the escape, Josh partnered with a former FBI agent who both agreed it is as close to a verified story as we can get without finding the men if they are still alive, find their graves and do DNA testing, or some other proof. They even interviewed a family member of the brothers who had the letter and he went with them to Brazil.
Of course we don’t have any 100% proof but in my opinion it’s the closest we will ever get to solid proof they survived. The episode is is incredibly interesting. I highly recommend checking it out.

Guy makes 24 million, gets caught and gets a 12.5 million fine and 3 years jail? I'll take that.

Don't think it works like simple maths. It isn't just 24 million minus 12.5 million Think how much he had spent over them years, he may not have even had 12.5 million left for all we know. Also what if he bought a big house with expensive bills and overheads, how we keep up with paying, especially from in jail. Just a couple examples to make my point that it may not be necessarily be worth it. He could've done 3 years jail time and had nothing when he came out. There have been much richer people who have gone bankrupt from much more stable financial positions.

About the Alcatraz case, I'm pretty much certain that they escaped. First they had at least a bit of training, since theyve gone up to the roof more than once for an observation of the guards routine etc, so they could have make it if they're raft hadnt make it. Second it could also be that they purposely had stripes of those jackets over for faking the death. I mean it's a fact they knew that someone will look for them in the near Future.

The first one was outrageous to say the least !!! Out of the 24 mil, he kept 11.5 mil to himself after fining and just 3 years in prison ? Not to mention he deprived the people who could’ve won those tickets.

There was a man in Australia that wrote a letter asking for a pardon years after the escape. US authorities were so convinced nobody survived they ignored it. In the early 2000's a documentary/ investigation did an age progression of the escapees and the man was one of the brothers.

about the prison escapees I think I saw somewhere that they had written a letter in a paper that they were alive and living in an apartment, I don't know if it was true but given the date and their ages they didn't have much to lose
