  • During my first trip to Maine in 2018, I drove through Augusta but didn't really bother stopping to look around. One of the most striking features of the city was the view of the old town district from the bridge, and that image stuck with me over the years so I went back to explore the town itself. In fact, it took me years to realize that the bridge scene I first noticed in 2018 was Augusta and not one of many other towns and cities I remember driving through. I'm glad I know where it's at now!

Yes locally the building that looks like a castle we do call the Castle. As stated in the sign it was built as a Post Office and federal building. It was added on to several times as there was an ever growing magazine publishing business on Water Street. Magazines such as Comfort Magazine was published and sent out around the world from here. Augusta was the magazine publishing capital of the world at one time. So they had to keep adding on to the Castle building to provide postal service space to mail out the magazines.

The pop out on one of the buildings was used as a judging both when there were boat races on the river after 1865. I can state that date as fact because except for a few buildings on Water Street all the buildings were built after 1865. In 1865 there is what now is called the Great Fire of 1865 when some 90 buildings burnt down.

Ok you need to do some history investigating. The fish statues are of the Sturgeon fish which come up the river. These fish can grow to 12 feet long and weigh 800 pounds.

The Fort is called old Fort Western which is the oldest surviving Wooden Fort in the US. The main building is the original building, everything else are reproductions.
