This is the best ling video I have ever watched. I out fish my buddies with only herring using a mooching rig. I need to learn how to flounder fish better because whenever I have baited up one a ling will always follow it. Last time I used a flounder the ling followed it in 80 feet of water half half the way up to the serface.

thanks for the tips! I've been catching them from shore, and from kayak in zone 4 on lighter tackle and boy are those some interesting moments getting drug around in a plastic boat! win some, lose some. you're so right about all the stuff you mentioned with live bait, and mono and them not getting hooked all the time. I love using rockfish when I can but I've tried anything from bullhead to surf perch and bass worms and they all work if there are lings around

We’ve been using halibut spreaders to keep the the bait leader and mainline apart. The extra hardware seems to only make it more irresistible

I fish for lings and rockfish with 60 pound braid then 80 pound leader to a lure and a upper loop for a shrimp fly. Pieces of bait on both. I flirt with the bottom too much so I like something I can barely break off. My biggest lings have been hitch hikers after hooking a small fish, reel them up slow and leave them under the surface till you gaff them.

Question: I had a 15lb ling retreat into a hole and sit there for ten minutes before coming out and landing it. The entire ten min, all I felt were tiny headshakes, coupled with strong pulls coinciding with the swell as if I was hung up on the bottom. Still, there were headshakes - enough to convince me I had a fish on. Are there any tips for getting them out of a hole quicker? I am positive I have lost some big lings due to snapping off the line on the rocks tugging a beast out of a hole.

The only thing that has helped me is going with heavy gear and craning my drag down tight. You need to put maximum pressure on them for the first 10-15 feet to get them away from any holes or rocks. Don’t give em an inch! Once you get them off the bottom, then you can back the drag off.

You lost me with the conventional reel on the spinning rod. the rod is made to bend the other way when fighting a fish. Maybe that is why you keep breaking rods?

Next lesson, Scott, can you demonstrate how you snap the line off of the downrigger? Is there a height requirement? Thanks

Just something to let you know you’re using a spinning rod for a casting reel maybe a reason why they break?

After seeing the upside down spinning rod you lost all credibility.
