- This performance of Lift Every Voice and Sing by the HBCU 105 Voice Choir was breathtaking! It was performed as the finale number of their annual conference performance in Washington, DC on September 18, 2011 at the JF Kennedy Center.
This is Roland Carter's arrangement. For me, this is the absolute best arrangement of this hymn. We have currently lost all knowledge of, or interest in formal performance practice. But this arrangement appropriately honors the history, the dignity and the style intended by its authors. Bravo, HBCU Choir!
This is the version that gives me goose pimples. I also think that both genders as well as voice type gets equally celebrated.
I can't believe time has passed so quickly. I'll never forget the day we performed this. I'm the 3rd soprano from the top left side. Representing Southern University Music Dept. I miss my 105 VOH family!
Cool...you all sang this wonderfully. Just beautiful.
❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏🙏
Ha Ha Alto section far right, front row, only tux on that side.(ME)
Well praise God ..for your "frog voice in the pond"...I'm praying..after 6 years..your still making advancements.
.moving forward..May God Be With You!!!
I was an alto in the Hampton University choir and sang this arrangement under the great Roland Carter. I'm brought to tears hearing in again.
Marilyn Lavergne I was a soprano. It really does bring back memories and tears to the eye. HU! "Home by the Sea."
Marilyn Lavergne I was a Soprano at HU! This is the only arrangement for me! Much love ❤️❤️
I get the same reaction. I was also an alto in the Hampton choir under the direction of Dr. Roland Carter. Such wonderful memories! ❤️
@@Talumpkin Hey, homie! #goodtimes 💙⚓
Congratulations to all who performed and arranged. Breathtaking! Thank you.
Am Howard alum . . this ranks as the best rendition of Roland Carter's arrangement. Pure Genius!
I had the honor of singing this when Roland Carter directed us himself. We had 4 choirs mashed into one and it was POWERFUL. I miss singing it.
Congratulations!
yes! i was a student of dr. carter at hampton u's concert choir in the late 80s and it was an incredible experience working with him.
I was singing on this one! So glad to see a recording 🙌🏽😢❤️
How I wish I could purchase this recording❤❤❤😪
When I see "thumbs down" indications after posts such as this one, I am wondering what the heck was going through their minds. An absolutely beautiful performance!
WS, so ignore them. You're absolutely right! This is glorious!
Im Proud to be apart of this Group!!!!
i Crossed this line VOH 11
I still can't listen or sing this without tears rolling! I am so honored to have been on this stage, in this very performance. This was one of the best days of my life. I made connections that have blessed my entire life!!! #105 #11Line #ICrossed105
That’s amazing to hear. I’ve enjoyed this performance countless times. It brings me to my feet lol
very tasteful and flawless. A classic masterpiece.
This performance defies superlatives. Roland Carter's beautiful arrangement of this hymn sung by a magnificent choir.
SOLI DEO GLORIA
I have sung this arrangement a number of times. It has never moved me, though, as much as this incredible rendition.
Still gives me goose bumps. I had the privilege of singing this song along with several other wondrous pieces of music under the direction of Mr. Carter last year at the LMEA (Louisiana Music Educators Association) All State Choir in Baton Rouge 2015. Mr. Carter is such a lovely and talented man. Never before have I met someone as eccentric and attentive to detail as him. It was a blessing to be able to sing under him as our clinician.
Blake Bramley I was there as a Tenor 1, and I completely agree!
Fantastic rendition! Hallelujah!
Shadowed beneath the hand,
May we forever stand,
True to our God,
True to our native land.
When Dr. Carter and the Chancel Choir blessed us with this at church one Sunday morning, I had to tap the hell out. Tears were streaming down my eyes because of how beautiful the transition (sorry don't know the musical term) is from the 2nd stanza to the 3rd stanza.
That is my favorite part of this rendition.
My High School choir is now learning this song, love this version. Go bass!
Absolutely brilliant performance! I love this song!
I absolutely LOVE this arrangement, I just wish the ending hadn't been so rushed! I wanted to revel in that Amen.
We did this in our church choir, and we ended on "A-men - A-aa-men" instead of just "A-a-a-ah-men". I liked our way better. But this choir is amazing!
When I was a Music Major At Morgan State University, The Choir, Under The Direction Of The Late Dr. Nathan Carter; We Cherished Singing This And We had The Wonderful Honor Singing This Under The Direction Of Dr. Roland Carter When Hampton Was "Hampton Institute." A True Masterpiece Of Our Black National Anthem!
I love this arrangement!
Wonderful and inspiring.
i miss sibging with my HBCU!!!
I love Mr. Carter's arrangement, and this group sounds beautiful singing it. HOWEVER, it seems like they missed some dynamics throughout. I remember singing this in HS and there were certain parts that were piano or softer and this group seemed like they went from forte to fortissississimo. But otherwise, beautiful job.
+billydee215 I absolutely agree with you. I've sung this with the Wooten Chorale Ensemble, and indeed there are lovely, moving touches of dynamics that are missed here. HOWEVER, as said, otherwise, beautiful job. Mr. Carter's arrangement is always ultra-spectacular in any earnest and heartfelt performance.
I absolutely disagree with you. While the music is written one way, each director can choose to interpret the song her/his own way. Carter choose this interpretation for this performance. His choice.
I enjoy this arrangement of this song! Great job to the performers and I love this arrangement!
Hehe that's meeeee on the end 1st alto right side front row
My baby is in this! I'm so proud! Yea Zack!
what the fuck
nope no for me
I just sang this song at my recent choir concert
Beautifully breathtaking
Well done everybody!!!
Does anyone know where I can find the sheet music to this arrangement, or what this arrangement is called? Please help!
The section before the chorale was way too slow for me but this performance still brought me to tears.
Does anyone know where I can find the Instrumental parts?
You really did "sang". Roland Carter would have been very proud.
WE SANG!!!!!
doing this song for flag day 2014 in Washington DC
That was unbelievable. What an arrangement
Beautiful!
I thought it was Randall Thomas...hmmm...I have been deceived!
why is conductor going over it so fast
Sing yall.
You sure did. Sounds like a studio recording. You guys are so talented!
Thks for sharing your gift
if you still want it I have a pdf copy
Loves this rendition as well as loving the virtual HBCU choir's rendition! Superb!!!
That was MAGNIFICENT!
Thank you for posting this performance from 2011.
Roland, this is truly a magnificent creation my friend. May the muses continue to visit.
Great times!!! Truly a wonderful experience!!! I miss all of your faces and voices!!!
Magnificent!
One must appreciate The talent and classical music. Once you do you will love this arrangement!
Just awesome!
What a great arrangement.
I was homeschooled joined Paul Quinn College choir. I sung this version under Ms. Jordan.
So powerful!!!
My favorite choir song.
teary eyed
I hope this is sung during Biden-Harris inaugural celebrations.
I also had the honor of singing this Arrangement directed by Roland Carter during a music conference at Southern University back in 2005 I believe.
***** I agree with you Gary!
This is going a bit too fast but still nice singing.
It Roland Carters Arr..Any store that sales choral music should be able to get it.
Goosebumps more than ever!
Magnanimous
BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!
Wow thus is so cool that choir is been there for really really long ago 😮 and i am in quoir.
Beautiful
The middle section (God of our) is much too loud!
Not bad
its way too many breaths in between phrases but the blend is nice....seems a bit elementary though
